Tengus are famed for their skill with blades. Some travel the world as sellswords, some enroll as bodyguards or militia. Hatar and Lelia Memaru found work as gardeners, applying their skill to the many plants that dotted the estate of the rich Monari merchant family. Here their only child, a girl named Shaya, was born and raised, sharing much of her infancy and adolescence with Alec, the Monari firstborn, a boy roughly her age. Rodolph, Alec's father, proved himself generous enough by paying for Shaya to get an instruction when she proved herself to have a brilliant, inquisitive mind.
However, fortune turned her back against the Monari family. Rodolph was struck by a sudden, devastating illness which left him a husk of what he used to be, and despite Alec and Shaya's hard work, most of the family fortune was lost. Shaya's parents found employment with another family, but she stood by Alec, who now had to care for two young sisters as well as his father. Help came from an old family friend named Stavros Suledan, who came to Alec with a business proposition. Stavros intended to open a newspaper service, and offered the young man the place of director. From them, for Shaya the choice was obvious, she volunteered as a traveling reporter as soon as she heard the news. And for those who intend to travel, there is much to be gained and nothing to be lost by enrolling in the Pathfinder Society.
