Hero Points : 2

Favored Enemy (Ex) (Humanoid:Human): At 1st level, a ranger selects a creature type from the ranger favored enemies table. He gains a +2 bonus on Bluff, Knowledge, Perception, Sense Motive, and Survival checks against creatures of his selected type. Likewise, he gets a +2 bonus on weapon attack and damage rolls against them. A ranger may make Knowledge skill checks untrained when attempting to identify these creatures.

Trapfinding: A trapper adds 1/2 her ranger level on Perception skill checks made to locate traps and on Disable Device skill checks (minimum +1). A trapper can use Disable Device to disarm magic traps.

Track (Ex): A ranger adds half his level (minimum 1) to Survival skill checks made to follow tracks.

Wild Empathy (Ex):A ranger can improve the initial attitude of an animal. This ability functions just like a Diplomacy check to improve the attitude of a person (see Using Skills). The ranger rolls 1d20 and adds his ranger level and his Charisma bonus to determine the wild empathy check result. The typical domestic animal has a starting attitude of indifferent, while wild animals are usually unfriendly.

To use wild empathy, the ranger and the animal must be within 30 feet of one another under normal visibility conditions. Generally, influencing an animal in this way takes 1 minute, but, as with influencing people, it might take more or less time.

The ranger can also use this ability to influence a magical beast with an Intelligence score of 1 or 2, but he takes a –4 penalty on the check.

Step 1: Write 5 background and concept elements that you feel are important to your image of the character.

1) John is very patriotic, and puts Risur above all else. His uncle is a member of Parliament, and his family have served in the navy and marines back to the days of King Boyle.

2) John’s father was a failure in that he became a merchant rather than a soldier. Thus all the family duty fell on John to fulfill, as his father’s only son. John’s uncle bought him a commission to the Battalion school of War in Flint when he was 16, during the height of the Fourth Yerasol War. He graduated quickly and fought through the last four years of the War.

3) During the War he was awarded a medal for valor based on his conduct during an assault on a Danori fort. He led a bayonet charge and was shot three times while storming the gate. He was only kept alive by a Clergy cleric serving in his unit as a medic. The healing led to his conversion to the Clergy faith.

4) He was captured by the Danori later during the war, and tortured for two weeks to get information on fleet movements. John knew nothing of value. He was rescued, but the experience turned him off to torture and still haunts him when he tries to sleep at night.

5) After the war, John returned to the Battalion School of War as their youngest instructor. He was a skilled soldier and teacher, but had no love for the work. John has been fighting for Risur for as long as he can remember. He has to keep fighting for Risur with everything he’s got. The minute he starts to slow down and think about everything he’s been through is when he starts to feel doubt. You can’t afford to doubt when you live for the olive wreath and stars. As an instructor, he had nothing but time to wonder if all the pain and blood was worth it.

Johanna Durrance knew him from the war, and saw that John was in a bad way. She suggested that he join the R.H.C. John took her up on the suggestion, and easily passed the exams required of potential Constables. He has been with the R.H.C. since.

Step 2: List at least two goals for the character.
1) John wants to become an Inspector.

2) As a player I think it would be cool if John eventually evolves to think for himself, instead of just following his patriotic duty.

Step 3: List at least two secrets about your character. One is a secret the character knows, one is a secret that involves him but that he is not actually aware of yet. This will help me in creating plots that center around your character. I will also be creating a third secret which you as a player will not be aware of, so expect some surprises!
1) During the war there was a terrible night when the Spine-takers were taken by the bloodlust of battle, and at the command of their CO led a bloody rape and pillage of a Danori village where every woman was taken before being killed along with the old men and children. The shrieks of desperate mothers, and their childrens’ faces soaked in blood haunts Johnny’s dreams as much as his torture at the hands of the Danori.

2) Johnathan’s father works as a spy for Danor.

Step 4: Describe at least three people that are tied to the character. Two of them are friendly to the character, one is hostile. If you like, you can include an enemy of yours here as well, so I have an instant NPC nemesis to throw at you.
1) Johanna Durrance; they both served during the War together. They were both in the Spine-takers, an elite marine killsquad given the most dangerous missions. They would cut the spines from their dead enemies’ backs and wrap them around their necks to inspire fear in their foes.
2) Guinivere Belmont; Johnathan’s current lover. They have been together for the past six months. While he enjoys her beauty, Johnathan does not truly love her. She on the other hand is deeply in love with him.
3) Denton Berkshire; Guinivere’s former fiance, whom she left for Johnny. He is a noted engineer and mathematician. He hates Johnathan for “taking” Guinivere from him.

Step 5: Describe three memories, mannerisms, or quirks that your character has. They don't have to be elaborate, but they should provide some context and flavor.

1) Johnny can feel his lungs burning. His swims as the cold pressure of the water all around him pushes down on him. He can see the weight through the murky water of the lake. It’s just a few more feet to the bottom, where it lies nestled in the silt and weeds. Johnny wills his legs to move but they feel sluggish. Suddenly, panic grips him. Air, he needs air now. He abandons his dive for the weight and struggles back to the light. He breaks the surface and takes a huge gulp of air.

”Where’s the weight, Johnny? Where’s the weight? Dive! DIVE NOW AND GET THE F*#*ING WEIGHT!”

Ten year old Johnny just struggles to stay afloat, choking and crying hysterically. His uncle stands on the bank sneering at him as he struggles to the shore. As soon as he is on dry land, his uncle grabs him by the ear, twisting it painfully. ”Just like your father, you are. Weak and worthless. If ye cannae get the weight, then you won’t have dinner either.”

2) The fear is incredible. So is the noise. Everything is explosions and flying turf. Johnny hears screaming that seems to never end, and then realizes its coming from his own mouth. He grips his musket so hard that his fingers hurt as he sprints across the sand. The dark looming wall of the fort appears between flashes of fire, sand and blood. Risuri marines fall all around him as the buzzing hail of musket balls and cannon fire rains down on them.

He can see the Danori filling the breach in the splintered gate now. They look just as frightened as he feels running at them, while they shoot back. Suddenly there’s a thump, and a blossom of pain in his arm. I’ve been shot! he thinks. Then there’s another explosion of fire, this time in his shoulder. He stumbles a couple more steps, maintaining his grip on his musket with one hand. The next moments are hazy, as instinct, adrenaline and pain continue to drive him forward. Then there is a danori soldier in front of him, and he stabs the man with a one handed thrust. Warm blood spurts onto the ground as the man falls back and another takes his place. Johnathan’s fellow Spine-takers are all around him now, and the chaos of battle reigns. More thrusts follow, rewarded with more blood and screams. Then there is another boom and unexpected burst of pain. This time in Johnathan’s stomach. He doubles over, and within a few seconds everything goes black.

3) The crisp dress uniform feels strange against his skin. The unfamiliar horse under his legs feels stranger. Worst of all are the roaring crowds, and bundles of confetti being thrown down on them from every building. The war was over, they were heroes! As if it were that easy. Johnny certainly didn’t feel like a hero with all the blood on his hands. He felt like a monster. But maybe it took monsters to protect a Risur free for beauties like that one. He pauses his brooding thoughts long enough to smile and wink at the bonnie brunette waving to him at the edge of the parade.

It doesn’t matter though. Hero or monster, the war was over, and life is moving on. He has a position lined up as an instructor at the Batallion, but Johnathan feels trapped already. He hasn’t properly slept in years, and he is used to living in hell. A bed is more foreign to him than a ship’s deck, or a jungle floor. He is more used to smelling blood, s%&$ and smoke than flowers and festival food. The girl can only distract his notice for a moment before old habits take hold again and he is scanning the crowd and rooftops for threats. His hand keeps slipping to touch the sabre and pistol at his sides, their presence a subtle reassurance. He just had to last through this for a little while. There would be need of him soon. There was always need of men and women like the Spine-takers. The sheep need savage hounds to protect them from the wolves. In the meantime he would just keep smiling and try not to go mad.
