About Idonias

Idonias's Tale:
Idonias was born to the sea. His parents, Ernusia and Anlidane, were members of a small tribe of undine living in a small, nondescript archipelago. When pregnant women in his tribe were about a month from delivery, they participated in a sacred ritual. They were taken two miles out to sea on a clear day in a small boat. There they jumped into the water and swam back on their own. Idonias was Ernusia's first child, but she was not nervous; she was known to be one of the tribe's strongest swimmers.
As the small seacraft was piloted out to sea, the sun bore down upon them. The sky was clear and the sea was calm. Anlidane said a prayer over Ernusia and gave her a kiss goodbye. She stepped off the boat with swollen stomach and began to swim. The boat moved with the wind back to shore, much faster than anyone could swim. Before long, Ernusia was alone. Despite her initial confidence, she felt a strong foreboding. With an unnatural speed, a storm was gathering. Ernusia began to panic as the waves began to churn. After an hour of worsening weather, the shore was within sight.
Anlidane stood nervously on the cooling sand as the sun withdrew behind the clouds, waiting anxiously for any sign of his young wife. The weather should not have been like this; the day had been chosen because the cleric's magic saw that it would be clear. Something was wrong, but hen he saw a small figure paddling quickly towards the shore he was overcome with relief. He wanted to swim out to meet her, but knew that tradition forbade it. He knew he had to be patient, and he knew that she was close enough to shore that worrying was unnecessary.
He was wrong. The clouds suddenly grew thick and rain began to pour. The waves had been strong before, but almost instantly they became unnaturally powerful. Before Ernusia or Anlidane knew what was happening, there was a terrible whirlpool forming directly around the pregnant woman. She was absolutely panicked. Out of the churning waters rose a horrifying aberration: the charybdis. Anlidane dove into the water, and several clerics and warriors followed him. Soon they were battling the monster, providing a chance for Ernusia to get to shore.
She dragged herself out of the water, only to find that she was in labor. As the monster battled her friends and family, she quickly and painfully gave birth to a son. After an extended battle and several deaths, the undine pierced the monster's eye and the charybdis began to flee, emitting terrible cries of pain and flailing blindly. As the men returned to shore, they came to Ernusia's aid. Unfortunately, they were too late; the stress and the delivery had killed her. Where Anlidane found a dead wife, he found a new, beautiful son.
For the length of his childhood, Idonias practiced the skills of his tribe. Unlike most undine, his people tapped into the strength of their minds and harnessed the power of psionics. He learned how to tap into his inner mental reserves in order to master his chosen form of combat, spear throwing. Idonias's childhood was quiet and peaceful. He swam, trained, fished, and played with the other children of his tribe. One day, when he was almost a teenager, Idonias was practicing throwing at fish from a small skiff with his father just offshore. It was a clear and beautiful day.
Soon, clouds began to gather and waves began to churn in a way Anlidane had only seen once before. Almost immediately, the experienced undine stopped his son and began to sail back to shore. The waves started to twist and turn into a whirlpool and a one-eyed charybdis emerged, screeching and flailing in rage. Swinging down one of its mighty claws, it cleaved Anlidane and Idonias's ship in twain. Once again, the tribe rallied quickly.
As Anlidane tried to escape with his son, a battle raged behind them. This time, however, the charybdis was quickly gaining the other hand. Men and women were torn to pieces and drowned in the abomination's wake. It crawled onto the shore, leaving a trail of the dead and dying behind it, reddening the water with the blood of the tribe. No one could escape. It slaughtered and ate children and the elderly, leaving no one alive. The last two left alive were Anlidane and Idonias. As the boy cried and cowered, his father stood tall, refusing to flee any longer. He launched his trident at the monster while psionically assaulting its mind. In a final stand, he briefly held off the slavering aberration.
The monster finally pierced Anlidane through the chest and tossed him aside. It towered over helpless Idonias. The boy futilely lifted his spear and tossed it, failing to pierce the creature's hide. It looked down at him, then turned and returned to the sea, leaving the boy alone among the dead.
For four days, Idonias sat on the beach and wept, clutching his father's trident. His entire life was reduced to loneliness and misery in one terrible day. As he mourned the dead, a ship, the Naked Maid, sailed to shore. It was filled with pirates who saw the boy and pulled him onto their boat. He was barely even conscious of what was happening. The pirates pressed him into service on their ship, handling leaks and rigging at the docks. He grew up in their service. They were not kind, but they were less malicious and violent than most pirate crews. After years with the crew, Idonias was promoted through the ranks, eventually becoming second mate.
Unfortunately for the ship, they were in a harsh rivalry with another, more powerful crew, the Diamond Cutlass. One day, sailing the sea, the ships came across each other and a battle ensued. Cannons tore the sails and the decks, killing men. Idonias fired arrows across the sea, dropping man after man. But he alone was not enough. Soon the Naked Maid was sinking, and Idonias knew when to abandon ship. He leaped off the deck and disappeared into the sea.
Swimming ashore in Point Peril, Idonias was upset, exhausted, and in need of a ship. He walked into the Formidably Maid looking for trouble.

Traits:

Besmara's Blessing: You were born aboard a ship at sea or down by the docks in a port city on an auspicious day. Old salts and sea dogs nod knowingly and say that Besmara the Pirate Queen, goddess of piracy, sea monsters, and strife, has marked you for a greater destiny. You don't know anything about that, but you've always felt more at home on the sea than on land, and your keen eyes can easily pick out a sail on the distant horizon. You gain a +1 trait bonus on Perception and Profession (sailor) checks. In addition, once per week you can reroll a Profession (sailor) check and take the higher result (you must announce that you are using this ability before the results of the check are known).
You came to a tavern in Port Peril called the Formidably Maid in search of your fate. You're not sure how many drinks you had, but they quickly went to your head and you passed out on the table before you found your destiny—unless it lay in the bottom of a bottle. Then again, maybe you found your destiny after all...
River Rat (marsh or river): You learned to swim right after you learned to walk. As a youth, a gang of river pirates put you to work swimming in nighttime rivers and canals with a dagger in your teeth so you could sever the anchor ropes of merchant vessels. You gain a +1 trait bonus on damage dealt with a dagger and a +1 trait bonus on Swim checks. Swim is always a class skill for you.

Equipment:

In the tavern: Trident, shortspear, rapier, dagger, Studded leather armor, buckler.
After pressgang: Dagger
