We are technically going to have time to "Rest" and, at the end of this week, we will discuss what that looks like with XP, leveling, etc.

Spider may also roll Discern Realities

Ajax looks around and notices a young sailor who has more than meets the eye. She dresses like a man, but obviously has some curves. He may approach her at his leisure.

For the roll above (Discern Realities), you may ask the GM three of the questions below:

What happened here recently?
What is about to happen?
What should I be on the lookout for?
What here is useful or valuable to me?
Who’s really in control here?
What here is not what it appears to be?

The sailors and builders are tired and hungry. One of the sailors is wounded pretty badly. You all have enough supplies and the building will commence in the morning. The builders, with the help of the party, should be done with construction in 2-3 weeks. The boat will be small, but sufficient for the group. Consider this down time while the building commences.

What kinds of things will you do while the boat is being built?

Ajax will roll Discern Realities to see what he sees (Roll 2d6+WIS).

The last pict narrows his eyes and spits at Ajax as the blade cleaves his head in two. The picts are dead, but is this a scout or raiding party? Hmmmm?

Spider deftly runs and uses his rapier to entangle the pict's feet. The pict slams into the ground with a "thud" as his momentum drives the dagger stuck in his deeper in. The pict is not dead, but is almost there and definitely incapacitated. What will the group do?

As the pict runs away from Ajax (who took a small tumble) and tries to attack Siobhan, the druid quickly blocks and counters the spear jab and drops the pict with one blow!

Absolutley! Bo, you can look for a rock, stick, one of the spears left over by the picts you killed, etc. Throw that thing! It would be a volley, which is based on DEX.

What does Ajax do as he witnesses the two picts run off in the distance? Do you have a good distance weapon?

Roll Dex for Spider as he sprints, depending on his speed and agility, to reach his foe (and hopefully retrieve that darn dagger).

Siobhan swings his weapon at the fleeing stabber. Roll HackandSlash.

This pict is the one running away from Ajax and past you to flee into the trees behind dagger in the back guy.

The one pict running from Ajax keeps running, but wants to take advantage of Siobhan's limp. He gives a "run by" jab at Siobhan after the transformation takes place. What does Siobhan do?

Siobhan leaps after the escaping pict to no avail. The pict is too fast for him. Siobhan goes head over heels as he stubs his foot on a rock, taking ouchie: 1d4 - 1 ⇒ (3) - 1 = 2.

Spider monkey wrote:
If I catch up to him I will trip him with my rapier.

Describe how you will catch up with him.

Ajax-Bo wrote:

As the last pict tries to get away from him, Ajax says "not so fast" and swings his massive sword (not a coy euphemism) at the pict in one last ditch effort to make sure that he never has to face this pict again.

The pict is so fast and fearful that he avoids the swing, causing Ajax to lose his balance and tumble hard to the ground hardfall: 1d4 - 1 ⇒ (3) - 1 = 2

This one might get away if Ajax's allies cannot intercept him before he gets to the woods!!!

There is always a minimum of 1 damage unless your armor absorbs it. Don't forget your 1XP for failure rolls.

Siobhan Wildeyes wrote:
Siobhan turns around to see if there are any picts in range that he can get to? If he can get to the one with the dagger in him the he will attempt to take him down.

Siobhan sees the pict running with the dagger in his shoulder. He is wounded and a little slow because of the wound. These wild men are fast!

In order to catch him and hit him, Siobhan will have to run a leap into him. Roll HackandSlash with a -1 because Siobhan has to leap and extend himself.

Be sure to describe what he looks like as he leaps and attacks because that's just cool.

Siobhan Wildeyes wrote:

[dice=Hack-n-slash]2d6+1

With a vicious bite to the jugular, the pict is almost dead as Siobhan hears a twang as a crossbow bolt whizzes from behind him and finishes the pict. The sailor gives a curt nod of support to Siobhan as the pict's blood begins pooling around the dead body and Siobhan's feet.

Spider hits one of the fleeing picts in the shoulder with his dagger, but the pict keeps going with Spider Monkey's dagger still in him!

One of Siobhan's picts is running away scared and one of the picts around Ajax, seeing as how his allies died and he is alone, turns tail and runs. They are the only ones left alive and they are running as hard as they can.

Ajax-Bo wrote:
That is 8 to hit and 12 damage ( I get a 1d10, +2 for sharp weapon, +1 for serrated edges)

Ajax stabs into the throat of the attacking pict, dropping him. As he falls, choking on his own blood, he gets a boost of adrenaline that allows him to take a final stab at Ajax. finalstab: 1d4 - 1 ⇒ (3) - 1 = 2

One more left!

Siobhan Wildeyes wrote:
Siobhan unleashes a hopefully devastating series of attack on the pict.

The great beast lunges for the throat of the flailing pict on the ground! Roll HackandSlash

Sorry I am not posting much but I can't find all of the rolls for each move. I am getting very confused. I have told Heath that I will call him this week and hope that he can help me to understand some of this. I am very sorry for holding up the game and hopefully, I will soon be on track with the rest of y'all. I promise that once I really understand what I am doing, I will keep up.

You are completely fine, man. Cox's post below is helpful (check out that link on basic moves). You can also ask questions about what moves do. They are basically like taking an action/casting a spell, using an ability, etc. in DnD, but are more story/fiction focused. The cooler you make it sound, the more fun we can have with it. Just tell me what the character is doing and I can tell you what move to roll. Talk to you tomorrow!

Siobhan Wildeyes wrote:

Siobhan digs deep into the spirit of the Grey Devil drawing forth a mighty roar to inspire fear (he spends one hold to do this) in his enemies.

Heath there should not be a roll for this it should be something you interpret in the fiction. Could be used to give a bonus to the next Hack an slash for those attacking me (+1 ongoing as long as they are fighting the Grey Devil) or could cause them to run away depending on what you want to occur in the story we are creating. Hope that all makes since.

Gotcha. Still learning this "hold" stuff.

Siobhan's vision goes red with rage as the primitive nature of his form takes over his body and he unleashes the beast within in a blood curdling roar that inspires fear in two of the picts. One of the picts loses control of his bodily functions as he runs away and the other cowers in fear, awaiting the wrath of whatever punishment the beast wishes to give him!!

Spider monkey wrote:
spider will look around to see who need the most help. I will throw my last dagger at one of the Picts fighting that friend.

As you look around, you notice Siobhan has taken several hits in his beast form (you are assuming it's still him since his type might be odd to you). You toss your dagger towards the back of one of the wild men facing this fearsome beast!! Roll Volley and you have a +1 from one of the sailors shooting his crossbow at the same one

Siobhan Wildeyes wrote:
Heath, what are the moves that I have with this form? The shape took was the grey devil. Not sure what the moves should be but one could be pounce, one could be something like trample or trip or they can be what ever we want. One could even be inspire fear or something like that.

The grey devil can inspire fear, stopping someone's action for a turn as they cower (7-9) or even making them run away (10-12)! The success roll is based on your shape shifting dice roll.

Spider skewers his last attacker with a swift stab of his blade to the pict's gut, but the momentum of the charging wild man actually knocks him down. Spider hits his head hard on a rock as he falls. Igotknockeddown: 1d4 - 1 ⇒ (3) - 1 = 2

Your last assailant is down and you can now assist others

Spider monkey wrote:

heath, I need to remember that as a halfling I get +2 damage on ranged att

As Spider gets hit he pulls his rapier out of its holster and stabs at the pict.

Roll HackandSlash

I remembered and calculated that into your hit along with the sailor crossbow help. We are all still learning.

Ezuri has been quiet and kept to himself on the journey thus far, he is not much of a small talker or very involved at all in menial matters, but now he sees his chance to make a difference.

Ezuri seeks to flank the ambush by defying danger ...by getting out of the way or acting fast, +Dex

Go ahead and re-roll since no actual dice result appeared.

The three heroes notice their fourth member, who had been quiet and incognito for a while (which is his way), join the fray to make things a little more evenly matched.

Siobhan Wildeyes wrote:

anytime we get a 6 or less on a 2d6 roll we mark 1 so. To level we need at least our level plus 7 in total xp

Siobhan will attempt to spin around again exchanging hits with each of his opponents.

Fail! Get that 1 xp, boyeeeee!

Seeing the great cat to be not as formidable as they thought, the three picts become braver and attack with greater force, wounding the great feline with multiple stabs. Two of them connect this time.

damage: 2d4 - 2 ⇒ (4, 3) - 2 = 5

Any damage taken is reduce by any armor you may have, which would be at least 1 for the cat.

[dice=Hack and Slash]1d20 + 0; 1d10 + 3

closest to me just took 10 damage!

Even though the dice roll should be 2d6, I'm still going with what it rolled because it makes for good story-telling right now.

Ajax swings his mighty sword, felling one wild pict who was too eager to meet death. One pict of three dies as the aeterial spray hits the faces of his allies. Instead of discouraging them, it only seems to embolden them to fight with greater gusto.

The other two attack Ajax together, hoping they will succeed as they flank Ajax, who they poke at like a wild animal. What does Ajax do as they poke at him?

Siobhan Wildeyes wrote:

No crap, Sherlock!

:)

Spider monkey wrote:

I will attempt to toss my second dagger at one of the incoming Picts.

Hit!

I will then look for another bush to hide in.

Fail! Gain 1 xp

With a flick of the wrist and a speed the human eye can barely follow, Spider hits and drops another of the picts, who falls face first and slides to stop right next to Spider's hiding shrubbery. Another pict bites the dust!

There is only one left. Spider tries to quickly find another spot to hide, but cannot do so in time!! The final of three picts rushes him and stabs him with his crude spear. The weapon may be crude, but it still hurts! Speardamage: 1d4 - 1 ⇒ (1) - 1 = 0

You made your roll and Spider finds 2 gold lunas, but is not able to get both of them. He only gets one, but something is better than nothing!

This event all took place before combat.

Ok, so dice rolling.

I just re read the part in the book showing that i should have rolled 2 d6 and not a d20, and it should be plus 2 not 16.

but even beyond that I guess im getting the formula mixed up so that it isn't actually rolling.

Can someone put exactly what i need to roll this below for me. I am a learn as you go type of guy. Unfortunately I dont have an extra hour to re read everything that I read back in april when we first started talking about playing but I'll catch up soon.

Thanks

Dude, you are completely fine! We are all getting used to this dice roller and format. I mentioned a few things in the game, but see what I posted to you in the game below as well.

Here is an example of a typical attack roll (called HackandSlash in this game):

{dice=HackandSlash}2d6 + 2; 1d6 + 2{/dice}

Be sure to replace the { and } with a brackets [ or ] or the formula will not work. Try it out a few times if you like as well. Just say, "I'm testing this roller" and it's all good.

Ezuri the Ranger wrote:

[dice=Flank]1d20 + 16]

If I cant get the dice thing down this time I might need some help. haha

You are fine, bro. I have posted how to correctly post dice rolls so that they actually work at the bottom of this message. When you type them, just substitute [ or ] where you see { or } below.

{dice=HackandSlash}2d6 + 3; 1d6 {/dice}

Also, always wait for me to tell you what to roll. You will describe your action and I will tell you what to roll most of the time (unless it's a special move on your character sheet I know little about). Then you can ask, "Can I use this move to do this...." I hope all this makes sense, but it will get easier as we go along.

Spider monkey wrote:

[dice=Damage]D8

do we get XP every time we fail a roll?

Absolutely! Please do not forget to keep up with your 1 xp every time you roll a 6 or less for the total.

Spider monkey wrote:
[dice=volley]2d6+2

Spider Monkey hits one of the picts for 1 damage as they run wildly past and SM throw a quick shot at his back, hoping to drop him. Fortunately, one of the sailor's was also taking a crossbow shot at the same one you nimbly hit with your dagger. The pict drops! 1 down...11 to go!

Spider monkey wrote:
[dice=defy dAnger]2d6+2

You successfully jump behind a bush as 3 picts run past you. Unfortunately, the disturbance of the bushes makes a small bird fly out and 3 other picts come your direction to investigate the bush.

The large, grey beast form is a little awkward for Siobhan and he reaches out too far with the unfamiliar limbs, missing all three of his assailants. All three of the picts are terrified of the beast, but one is brave enough to stab into you with it's crude spear. Take damage and your 1 xp for failure.

1d4 - 1 ⇒ (4) - 1 = 3

The builders take cover behind trees and nice shrubberies (the ones that are not too big or tall) since they are not much for fighting (they pull out daggers just in case). The sailors enjoy a good brawl and take up defensive positions with half of them bringing out crossbows and the other three pulling out melee weapons to aid the leaders in this expedition in combat. Players may have one sailor aid them in some way in this fight. Describe how they help.

Spider monkey wrote:
Spider looks around to find a defensible position.

Roll Defy Danger (Dex) as you look to find cover and then a volley roll (Dex) to launch your daggers at picts who rush past your position.

Siobhan starts heading in the direction indicated by Sika. He shouts, "to arms, preprepare for ambush."

He then continues to run toward the ambush while calling upon the spirits to change my shape

[dice=Shapeshifter]2d6+3

Siobhan roars to life as the monstrous grey devil, but it takes him the whole time to change and he is left in the wide open before the picts who come rushing from their cover in the dark forest. There are 12 picts in all and three come rushing at the giant tiger-like creature. They seem more beasts than men as they rush forward to stab their prey.

Siobhan Wildeyes wrote:

What here is not what it appears to be?

Sika sees a several bushes that are moving,which he considers to be strange since they usually do not move on their own. The creatures moving them are naked and appear human, but are covered with mud and filth. He soars down towards his master, his speed and expression clearly indicating to Siobhan that an ambush is inevitable.

Sika has just bought the entire group 2 hold (preparatory actions) before the inevitable ambush (Siobhan must warn the group quickly in order to get these actions). Keep in mind the ambushers know the group is there, so time is short. What would you like to do?

Siobhan Wildeyes wrote:

He responds to Ajax, "My name is Siobhan. I am hoping that we run into some interesting creatures while we are there. I am traveling around looking for new creatures that I can find and understand the essence of. I have heard wild stories from Lost Island and hoping to find some unique creatures there."

At that moment there is a screech from the air and he raises his arm so that a Falcon can land on it.

He says, "This is Sika. He is my friend and helps me scout around"

Heath I want to use Sika to scout around I am able to communicate with him so this should be possible.

Siobhan looks at Sika and says, "Scout around alert me if you see anything unusual."

He then launches him into the air.

Sika soars majestically into the air, high above the foreboding woods that surround the path the group is travelling. He seems to have not a care in the world. Still, he wants to please his master and observes the immediate area the best he can (roll Discern Realities).

The master builder for the ship pulls out a map and says, "We should be at the shore in just a few hours. After we get there, we can set up camp. There have been reports of savage picts in this wilderness. Perhaps your bird will spot them before they spot us, Siobhan.
