“Fitch from the Wayfinders here. Sorry about Kirkath popping on the screen; kids always like the holoprojectors. Anyways, long and short, I hear you’ve been assigned to explore Elytrio. First contact is important. Need to make a good impression. Wayfinders specialize in this sort of thing, so I wanted to offer some help! The drone has a translation module strapped on its back. It’s not as reliable as some magical solutions you might have, but if you’re in a pinch for communicating, it might help!”

“I'd'ave come in person but I'm out here on the Master of Stars. Waaaaayyy too busy.”

There is a sound of a crash and a dull BOOM! coming from off screen. Fitch's attention is drawn away for a moment.

“WHAT!?! POWER THAT DOWN FIRST, YOU IDIOT! She turns back to the screen. “Gotta go-Good luck on your mission. WHO HIRED YOU MO- The transmission suddenly cuts off.

On the back of the drone is a package containing a modest-sized device.

Quote:

TETRAD CERTIFIED TRANSLATOR LEVEL 2 (BULK L)

This elaborate datapad has several additional audio receptors to capture nearby sounds. If you don’t share a language with creatures you encounter, you can activate this device to collect basic linguistic information. The device requires 10 minutes of observed conversation to gain enough information to operate. The device then acts as a rudimentary translator. It does not allow you to converse with creatures with whom you don’t share a language, but it can relate very basic information. Examples of statements the device could interpret would be: “come with us,” “lower your weapons,” or “leave immediately.” The device cannot parse proper names, including personal designations or the names of items and places. Some extraordinary complex or obscure languages might not translate clearly with this device.

A Tetrad certified translator has 10 capacity and 1/hour usage.

"What?" Fitch looks at the party blearily. "Okay, right. Be right down - HEY! TURN THAT THING OFF WHEN YOU'RE NOT USING IT! WHAT IF IT-" the connection ends abruptly.

Fitch appears a few minutes later with several other Starfinders, including Kieu Kein, the father of Kieu Si and Kieu Lan.

"Whaddya know," Fitch says as he looks over the strange creature. "So all along we had a passenger, eh? Must have broken out of that stasis tank back there. Maybe on purpose, maybe the tank broke. Who's supposed to be in charge of these tanks, anyway?" Fitch looks around accusingly at his subordinates, while one of them sits down in front of Wang and begins conversing with it, using some kind of magic to communicate.

Fitch turns back to the group.

"Well, you did good. Not only did you find the problem but you also made first contact with an alien species. Not bad, not bad at all. I'll be sending Guidance a favourable report."

"But... no time, no time. Gotta get back upstairs before those morons blow out a plasma induction chamber! See you around!"

Fitch turns to leave.

"What?" Fitch asks incredulously. "A couple of gorram kids? It figures. I think-" Fitch turns away to shout at someone off screen. "WILL SOMEONE TURN OFF THAT FRAKIN' ALARM? HOW MANY TIMES DO I HAVE TO TELL YOU?!?"

Fitch turns back to the screen. "Yeah, those are Kieu Kein's kids. I'd give the nannies a beating if they weren't robots. I'll send him down to- DAMMIT THAT'S THE OXYGEN! KEEP THAT TORCH AWAY FROM THERE! HOW OLD ARE YOU ANYWAY?"

The connection ends abruptly.

“Finally, fresh meat!” the ysoki exclaims over the screen, sounding pleased.

“Ha! Yeah, anyway, name’s Fitch—pleasantries over, time to get to work. I had some trouble earlier with the lights flickering on the ship, and now both the lights and computers have suddenly gone out on E-Deck. No idea what’s causing it, but you work this job long enough and—”

Fitch’s attention flicks to something offscreen, and she shouts “Kirkath! The welding torch is not a toy! You wanna go in the toddler’s pen with the other kids?”

She snorts dismissively before continuing, “Sorry, some of these little ones would cut off their own heads if I let them. Anyway, it could be some lunkhead screwed up the wiring, but that’s a pretty big system failure for a simple electrical short. I’d prefer to send in some people with combat training to scout it out, just in case someone or something is sabotaging the ship. If it’s nothing, great, get the power back on if you can. If there’s something suspicious, use your comm units to report in to me. I’ll give you the access codes, so— Selicha!” Once again Fitch's attention is directed off-screen.

“If you touch that panel I will staple you to the hull!”

The screen on the drone cuts out, then flashes to display the ship’s schematics and the passwords for the computers on E-Deck.

Fitch looks over at "Wang," who is feeding contentedly from the power cables, though he (or she, or it) does appear to get a bit nervous when the other people enter.

"So that's it, is it? Amazing something so small could short out the whole deck. Is it intelligent? I better get my xenologists down here."

He looks around the room at his technicians.

"Well, looks like you've secured the place, and we can get to work." He pulls a credstick out of his pocket, and offers it to the party. "Consider this your first commission. Starfinder field agents get paid on a commission basis when they complete assignments. But I'm sure you knew that."

There are 400 credits on the credstick.

"When you're ready I can have Kipp ferry you back. Stop in the mess hall first if you want."

The starfinders call up Fitch on the Comm to report their status. Fitch appears on the screen.

"What? An alien? I didn't catch that..." Fitch turns aside from the screen and shouts, "WILL YOU KNOCK IT OFF? I'M ON THE COMM HERE!!!"

Fitch turns back to face the screen, though the background noise remains about the same.

"Children? What? I can't... who?" Fitch turns away from the screen again. "WHERE THE HELL IS KIEU KEIN? HIS KIDS ARE ON THE LOOSE AGAIN!!!"

Once more Fitch returns to the screen. "Yeah, I'll be down soon," she says, and disconnects the call without waiting for a response.

"Hello there Pathfinder Faction Leader Fitch. This is Wint here. I'm one of the new recruits!!!. We're supposed to come do a job for you!!. I'm SO looking forward to helping you.

Here is a group picture of us so you'll know us!!

Oh, could you possibly send a shuttle for us? And tell us where to go?"

A small white Ysoki appears on the comm screen.

"What? Oh, hello. Yes. Right, um... yes, I can send a shuttle shortly."

"The docking bays are all around the rim. You'll need to take a tram to Docking Bay A-37. Should be about 45 minutes. I'll tell the pilot to wait for you. But don't take too long. Let me know if you can't make it."
