A True 3-Sider

4/5

(NOTE: For the most part, I give a good review for this item. However, if you're just interested in reading my one criticism, it's at the bottom of this post.)
I love Precision Edge dice. They have a more gem-like appearance than any other type of die out there and, for some reason, I consistently role higher with them. I needed a 3 sider to complete my collection but was only able to find 6 siders that had two 1's, two 2's, and two 3's on them. Plus, they were all opaque. Call it being picky but I wanted a true 3 sider that went along with my set of 7 polyhedral Precision Edge die. This one fit the bill perfectly!
Why didn't I give it a 5 star rating if I love it that much? Because it does (as do ALL Precision Edge dice) have one little flaw. The only criticism I have with all Precision Edge dice is that they have a tiny chip along an edge or on an end because of the way they come out of the injection mold. In fact, the one in this picture here has it on the extreme right end. If you look closely, you'll see the tiniest protrusion. If you were to turn it to face you, the tip would be rough and whitish in appearance. It's only a cosmetic flaw but it's a shame as the beauty of Precision Edge dice lie in the fact that they look like really shiny jewels. However, this little chip really detracts from that.

It Certainly Had It's Moments

4/5

I'll be the first to admit that "The Gamers" (by Dead Gentlemen Productions) is, far and away, my favorite 'gamer film'. That being said, I think that, just like with any other new movie genre, you're bound to dislike a film if you compare it to the one that "blazes the trail". Especially, if that film happens to be one as humorous as "The Gamers".

I fully believe that the reason why "Blade Runner" did so poorly in the box office when it originally debuted, was because folks were of the mind, "Hmm...Harrison Ford? Science fiction movie? This is gonna be like 'Star Wars'! Alright!!" Of course now, both fan and movie critic alike, view "Blade Runner" as one of the most deeply provocative and classic sci-fi flicks of all time and a definite 'must see'!

So my advice is to not compare “Gamers” to “The Gamers”. They’re not the same film and I really don’t believe they were meant to be. Yes, from a strictly humorous standpoint, “The Gamers” beats all other ‘gamer flicks’ out there (which isn’t many) hands down. However, this doesn’t mean that “Gamers” is without merit and won’t provide you with almost an hour and a half of viewing enjoyment and laughs. I mean, C’mon…Your bound to hear more than a few chuckles when a guy stuffs beef jerky down his pants and dry humps it while saying, “Jerky, bi#%*!” and then serves it up at the gaming table! Or another guy gives his gaming buddy a huge quilt with the names of all of his own characters he got killed by being such a crappy gamer, and the names fill up both sides of the quilt!

Anyways, all I can say is, a review (even the one you’re reading right now) is just someone else’s opinion and you’re never truly going to know if you’re going to enjoy a film unless you see it for yourself. If I went by what the critics wrote about “Blade Runner”, I never would’ve went to see it when it first came out. Thank God, I decided to listen to my gut!

New Slant on a New Genre of Film

3/5

Like the title of my review states, "Fellowship of the Dice" is a different take on ‘Gamer Films’ or ‘Gamer Flicks’. I won't go into any description of the actual story itself because you can simply read the synopsis provided by Amazon.

The secret to enjoying this film, at least for me personally, rests on two main things:

First - Do not compare "Fellowship of the Dice" to "The Gamers" (by Dead Gentlemen Productions) or "Gamers" (by Sideshow Production). It is not, nor does it try to be, either of these two films and to compare them will only serve to confuse and frustrate you into not liking this flick. It’s almost like a Quentin Tarantino take on the gamer film. The humor and overall story is bit darker than “The Gamers” or “Gamers”.

Second – Understand that the folks you are watching around the gaming table are actually entertainers performing for the camera. The first time I watched “Fellowship of the Dice”, I wasn’t quite sure whether the people around the actual gaming table (not the cut-away commentary folks) were really true actors and actresses using scripted dialogue. By the middle of the film, I was pretty sure they weren’t and, quite frankly, found this to be incredibly disturbing. Which I suppose is testimony to the great acting job that these entertainers were doing. I mean I actually felt uncomfortable for Elizabeth myself! I guess I’ve been fortunate to have only gamed with folks (like those portrayed in this film) that were in dire need of psychotherapy on two occasions and both of them were one shot deals in a gaming convention at a local university.

So, while I freely admit that “The Gamers” is far and away my favorite ‘gamer film’, “Fellowship of the Dice” has some very humorous moments. Just keep reminding yourself, “These people are acting. These people are acting!” Which, in most cases, is never what you’d want to do while watching a film but, in this case, is mentally comforting.

Unpolished Hilarity

5/5

Low budget notwithstanding, this film is incredibly funny.

Early in the movie, there's a scene where the party's thief, Nimble, tries out a couple of his "thieving skills" in a tavern. I guarantee that you will be hitting either the pause or rewind button on your dvd player because, if you don't, you'll miss the next five minutes of the movie from laughing so hard or you'll just want to see that scene over a few times.

The Gamers is packed with little gems of humor like this. During our monthly gaming gatherings, if someone has to level up their character or roll a new one up, we'll pop either The Gamers, Gamers, or one of the discs of the 80's animated D&D series into the dvd player and let the other players watch. It's a great way to have a few laughs with your gaming buds.

While non-gamers are likely to get a chuckle or two out of this film, gamers will be splitting their sides with laughter. Highly recommended.

Great fun!

If you're a gamer this hilariously funny look into a gaming session at a college dorm will have you blowing soda out of your nostrils!

'The Gamers' follows the exploits of four gamers trying to hunt down and initiate the decisive battle against their characters' main nemesis "The Shadow".

The film masterfully switches between the gaming table and the actual adventure world. For example, seeing the characters attempting something in the gaming world but still hearing dice roll on a table-top right before an event happens is just too funny! If you're not holding your sides at the backstab scene, you're either not a gamer or undead.

This film is a "must have" for any gamers' DVD collection. I can't recommend it enough!
