About Arrika Telryn Neverrun

Picture - younger
Picture - now

Appearance:

Arrika is tall for a woman, around 5'9", with unruly red hair, dark eyes, and toned muscles hiding behind a hint of softness from living in Kenabres for several years now. Though she dresses in southern-style clothing, borrowed from the crusaders who have cared for her since her arrival, her Kellid heritage is evident in her ruddy skin and broad, somewhat homely features. Her equipment is somewhat of a mishmash, as it's been cobbled together from charity donations over the last few years - while it's in good working order, nothing is particularly new or high-quality. It's also all conspicuously long-sleeved - even in the heat of the summer, she never wears any sleeves shorter than her wrist.

She is rarely seen without Kelumarion, one of the Neverrun clan's gods that she can call to her side in the form of a great, tawny cat, hints of gold dancing through his thick fur of their own accord. While the leonal agathion looks fierce and intimidating, he is in truth quite gentle, acting as a teacher and caregiver to Arrika, and much of her clan before her through various other god-callers.

Personality:

Though she's lived among the southern crusaders for much of her life, Arrika's still held strong to her Kellid beliefs, and reveres the spirits that she believes to be all around her. Her strongest devotion, though, is to the god that dwells inside her, her companion Kelumarion. The two are inseparable, linked by a mystical bond that has shaped her from the night of her birth, when she was dedicated to Kelumarion's service by her mother, Kelumarion's last caller.

She still harbors a hint of mistrust for especially devout Iomedaeans - after all, her mother was murdered by one of the Inheritor's more zealous followers. Though she's learned that not all of Iomedae's church share in her captor's misguided fervor, she still can't help but approach new arrivals slowly when she sees a symbol around their neck. Just until she finds out for sure.

Forced to live in fear of the crusaders for the first several years of her life, Arrika still remains timid and quiet, as if doing her best to deflect attention. She is good hearted to her core, though; her companion Kelumarion has been a wise teacher. As devoted to Kelumarion as he is to her, the two seek to work for the betterment of Mendev and Sarkoris, furthering the spread of goodness in opposition to the Worldwound's corruption. Until now, that's meant becoming caregivers at the orphanage where Arrika was raised, but now they're considering a more direct approach to the fight against evil, though Arrika fears the battle lines. Kelumarion, for his part, is spoiling for a fight; though he's dedicated to Arrika and the ancient clan she represents, his cohorts in Nirvana have fought long and hard against the demon hordes, and he's itching to do his part.

Birth and childhood:

Arrika was born in Gundrun, where her mother and father lived. Just before her birth, however, her father was killed, overpowered by an Abyss-tainted bear while on a hunting trip. Kelumarion was linked to Arrika's mother Anais at the time, and the three of them managed to scrape by in Gundrun for a few years, but her mother decided to relocate to Nerosyan when Arrika was six, hoping the crusaders' presence there might help her to make a better life for her and her daughter.

Unfortunately, just outside Nerosyan they met a traveling party led by an overzealous inquisitor known only as Darion, a holdout from the witch hunts of the Third Crusade. He saw Kelumarion as the manifestation of a dangerous demon or a heathen spirit, and would not listen to protestations that the leonal was in fact a benefactor and protector. The travelers overpowered the trio, and Anais was burned at the stake while Arrika was forced to watch, Kelumarion disappearing as Anais breathed her last. Arrika was taken by the inquisitor and his band, in the hopes that she could be raised in "civilized society" and be rid of the "barbarism" in her blood.

Becoming a god-caller:

The night of her mother's execution, Arrika had retreated to the edge of the inquisitor's camp to sleep, or rather to be alone with her grief. Finally, she managed to sink into a fitful slumber, and in her dream, she wandered alone across dark trackless plains, calling for help she feared would never come. Then suddenly, she felt a warm breath on her ear.

I would not leave you, dear child. Long ago I swore to guide the Neverrun clan, lead them toward goodness and keep them from harm. The wound in the world has proven stronger than me so far, I fear - but you remain. Your mother dedicated you to my service the day you were born, as the first daughters of your people have been for time out of mind. Your mother is gone - nothing can change that, though I mourn her loss as deeply as you. But I will be with you always, until you draw your last breath.

When she awoke the next morning, though the great cat took no form, she still felt his warm breath at her shoulder.

Arriving in Kenabres:

Arrika arrived in Kenabres in the tow of the man who had executed her mother, bearing bruises and burns covering most of her body. Arrika had been unruly, the man explained as he quickly handed her over to the care of the church of Iomedae, and the burns barely concealed foul Abyssal symbols that he had found carved into her skin for an evil ceremony. Clearly their removal was necessary for the cleansing of her soul, he explained piously, and hew new caretakers nodded soberly. For her part, Arrika could only nod silently, tears running down her dirty cheeks.

For all of this was true - she had tried to run away when Darion came at her with the strange knife. And he had done his best to "hide" the cuts and scars his marking had left; but surely such a zealous man would have made sure to remove every part of the symbols, not leave them mostly readable...

She has lived in Kenabres for eleven years now, a ward of the church. Still feeling Kelumarion's presence inside her, she feared her new caretakers discovering her god and punishing her further, and she wore long sleeves to hide the still-readable Abyssal sigils scarred on her arms. Several times she tried to explain to her caretakers what had happened on her journey there, but it was dismissed, whether as fanciful stories, childish misremembering and embellishment, or far worse. Soon, she learned to stop mentioning it; it only led to more bruises.

But slowly, the inquisitional fervor began to dwindle, and the church began to seek out those who had taken Iomedae's charge too far. Three years ago, Arrika finally summoned the courage to reveal Kelumarion to her caretaker Portia, though she feared the woman would decry her as a witch too. Portia, though, recognized the spirit for what he was - an agathion, a creature of goodness and honor dedicated steadfastly to Arrika's protection and the fight against evil that raged in the Worldwound. On Arrika's report of her journey to Kenabres, an inquest began, and soon she had the grim satisfaction of watching the man who had burned her mother alighting his own pyre. But as she watched the spectacle to its bitter end, she swore she saw curls of green in the flames, and for a second, she could swear the man's form had changed as he burned. Where her childhood tormentor had once stood, a woman now leered back for just a moment before she disappeared, bones appearing from nowhere a second later to be left behind in the fire...

Now, she stays in Kenabres because it is the only home she knows. Having come into adulthood, she now works at the orphanage that took her in in her youth, and Kelumarion is quite a popular playmate among the orphans of the Crusade that live there. But she's seen the looks of awe that cross the great cat's face when the crusaders pass by in their shining mail, and how his claws flex in hope of a chance for a test. She knows that his heart is with the fight against the demons, and now she's (somewhat reluctantly) decided to accompany him into the fight. After all, her mother taught her that duty to the clan was her highest honor; with all fallen to the Worldwound's ravages, is not retribution where her duty then lies?

Role in the party:

Arrika will be acting as arcane support, mainly buffing, but some offensive spells such as grease that aid the party as well, and investment into UMD to widen her capabilities. She will also bring some widespread utility through her summoning abilities when her eidolon isn't around, and she's taking Diplomacy to act as a passable party face. Kelumarion will act essentially as her protector, not only as a melee combatant but also as a judge of character and watchful set of eyes to accompany her.
