Wow! I was 28 messages behind! well done. :)

Lilith stands with Polo trying to by the group a little time as well. She still has a few charges in her wand of flaming sphere and uses a charge to set the barn alight, rolling the sphere through anything that might be considered flammable. This might slow or limit pursuit.

As she moves with the group she does well at first, keeping up and even leading but becomes winded eventually, and finally fatigued..

Operating on a rush of adrenaline and the thrill of having, possibly, saved Kaiya's life after all, Lenneth quickly scoops up Indigo and bolts after the rest of the group into the dark night. As the group travels, she attempts to aid in slowing the pursuing groaners by churning up the terrain into nigh impassable quagmires. "Solace...it's our best chance!" she gasps.

She'll use Swamp's Grasp as able, there's no limit on uses per day; the previous one just disappears if she reapplies the hex to a different area.

Ouch >.< What a horrible time for the forum dice bot to decide to be mean!

As Polonius touches the necklace around Kaiya's throat, it feels greasy and slick. His hand remembers its touch long after it is stowed in his pocket. Whilst it is still in sight, Lilith gives it a very quick glance with her magic.

Lilith:
It radiates faint abjuration magic, but there is something not quite right with it, you'd have to spend some time somewhere you can study the thing properly in order to uncover any more though

One foot in front of the other, legs burning, lungs heaving, frantically glancing about to check you aren't being cut off. Tali points ahead of you, and Lenneth swiftly gestures at a group of zombies on an intercept course in front of you, turning the ground to mud. They are slowed just enough to get past without engaging them. Little by little your lead grows, until halfway through the night you can no longer hear them. They're still out there somewhere, but in the dark and miserable nightscape, it is impossible to say where or how close they are. You breathe a sigh of relief, it's not too much further to Solace now, dawn will be in a few hours, you just have to keep up the pace for a little while lon...*what was that!?*

Flashing in the periphery of your vision, shapes move in the darkness around your group. A dark eye reflected, moving blackness hinting of fur, a flash of teeth... there are several of the things, and they are behind and on both sides of you. Looking ahead, Euron curses. At some point, some time in the night, with no landmarks or maps to go on, he misremembered the path back to Solace... In front of you is the edge of a cliff, the faint gurgle of a river can be heard far, far below. One end of an ancient looking rope bridge juts over the side, frayed rope wound around a stone block jammed in to the earth.

knowledge(engineering) DC 14:
Not the strongest of bridges in the first place, you wouldn't trust more than one person at a time on that rope, and you cannot even see the other side so it's likely it will take a while to cross...

You sense more than see or hear the shapes around you stop moving, and then there is an unmistakeable and guttural howl from the darkness, as the wolves surrounding you give voice to their hunt.

DC 14 will save versus a fear effect, if you fail you become shaken for 10 minutes, and yes it does stack with your fatigued condition...

From out the black night walks a creature of dirty white fur and bloodied fang. It stops, quivering with hatred as its lips curl back to snarl, and then it speaks

Finally you are cornered prey, now I will have revenge, for my pups, for my mate whom you slew! the she-wolf shudders, barely able to contain her rage and desire to devour you

I will give you one chance to hand over someone to us to slake our hunger, one chance to buy you more time to run...

knowledge(nature) DC16:
It's the same species as the white wolf you met in the mountains... like white worg or winter wolf, though its exact appearance doesn't match either of those creatures

She is standing about 50 ft away, and your senses are unable to perceive how many wolves are in her pack, as they are all staying back for now.

With Valex carrying Kaiya, who has the everburning torch? Without that or another source of light, those without darkvision are effectivly blind out here under this cloudy sky...

Will save: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23

As the howl rings out in the night, Polonius turns slowly to face what he already knows is there. Wolves. Those bloody wolves.

We are in serious trouble here. Polo whispers to the others. But I'll be damned if I let any of us go to those bastards.

Back toward the bridge. Euron, Azmerai, we need you to hold these things at bay but if we get to the bridge they will only be able to come at us a couple at a time. I'll give them something to howl about... he says grimly, pulling a bomb from his belt.

This is the wrong time, wolf. he points defiantly at the fanged monster in the darkness.

The. Wrong. Time. Back off now and live. If you come at us we will wipe you and your brothers from the face of this cursed earth. You shouldn't doubt the truth of my words, only consider the fates of those that came before you.

(KILLED IN ACTION) | Gnome | Alchemist 4

Also, the Everburning Torch doesn't emit any heat so I don't suppose there would be a problem just securing it in someone's belt like a lantern..?

Light - Lilith will cast Dancing lights when she has a free standard action. It is free move ahead of the group but it only lasts a minute so when she is having to run she does without it most of the time. When the party stops at the bridge she will cast it. And FYI on those fort saves, without doing a lot of math the odds were less than 1 in 10 on average that any of us would make both of those rolls.

Though the appearance of the great she-wolf and her pack should have broken Lenneth's will to run, to fight, she instead reaches deep within herself and finds...anger.

No...Kaiya lives, we all live...we survived that hellish farmhouse, you will NOT take our victories from us!

She focuses on that anger, strengthening her resolve so that she does not falter at the howl that echoes into the night.

"Our friend is correct. We slew the greatest of you, lest we be slain ourselves. And we have grown stronger since. Do you really want to challenge us again? You think us weak, but I suspect we will prove a more formidable prey than you have ever encountered," Lenneth hisses.

Intimidate: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24

It's a long shot, but Lenneth is trying to play Bad Cop to Valex's Good Cop here. Also, she's getting p*****...

OK we'll assume the everburning torch is strapped to the top of Valex's backpack

The she-wolf stares, as still as the stone behind you. Drizzle continues to shower down on you. Heartbeats thump in your chest. She speaks.

Small one, there is no time for us but wolf-time, bellies are full or they are empty, it is time to sleep or time to hunt

Her eyes are as cold as the rain as she looks at Euron

Large fang, our territory lies where are prey lives

Lilith's conjured lights blaze off in to the dark sky over the chasm, seconds later they show the other end of the rope, some 60 feet away on the other side, thankfully still tied around another stone block. The bridge is ill-maintained and severely damaged, it's clear that only one piece of rope still holds securely. As she moves to the frayed rope Lilith realises she will have to climb hand over hand.

Note for all rope-users: Whilst the rope is swinging in the weather and rain-slicked, there are plenty of additional hand and footholds to use due to the broken bits of bridge. Climb DC is 10 if you want to move half your speed in a round, and DC 15 if you want to move your full speed. Climbing takes both hands so no weapon use or spellcasting whilst you're on the rope. Don't forget any relevant fatigue or fear effects.

The wolf seems to ignore Lilith's move towards the rope as Valex speaks eloquently of peace. As the bard finishes his sentence, sure he has delievered a stellar performance bound to sway his audience, he meets the wolf's gaze. It's eyes are unblinking, unemotional... unswayed.

Wonderful roll and you bought Lilith time to get on the bridge, but the she-wolf's motivations and behaviour is beyond the diplomacy of men to influence.

Lenneth's strong words pick up where Valex left off, yet it seems impossible to discern whether they have had an effect, then comes her voice again

Your scent makes a lie of your words dark one, you are tired, you are wounded, you will fall. We might lose some of the pack, but the pack will kill, the pack will eat.

she shakes her head and water cascades off her fur

Give us one of you for meat, the wounded one will do, then go. There will be no more words, the next time I open my mouth it will be filled with your blood and flesh.

Lenneth, you bought another round to prepare, you're pretty sure there's no chance of another

Tali hesitates, eyeing the wolves and then the distance to the other side of the gorge, holding her knives low and ready, the torch's faint light glittering over their serrated edges

We can't all get across before they fall on us...isn't it better to sacrifice one to allow the others to live? How can we even carry her to the other side? she counsels, the wind gusting and driving icy rain in to your faces.

The wolves are forming up around the alpha, in moments there will be no more chances to speak.

Tali starts moving towards Valex and Kaiya.

Oh, it is on like DONKEY KONG!

Polonius notices movement out of the corner of his eye and though his spirit soars to see Azmerai and Euron mobilising beside him, his stomach lurches when he hears the drow speak and sees her moving toward Valex and, more importantly, Kaiya.

His memories of the argument outside the goblin complex come flooding back, the sudden realisation of Tali's heritage, Euron's defence that they had all done things they weren't proud of and his own counter, the story of the fox and the scorpion he had told Ben years ago...

"I couldn't help it," said the scorpion. "It's my nature."

A cold fury rises in him like nothing he has experienced before. He doesn't even feel the wind and rain lashing at him, just a deep cold, a nothingness. It frightens him, but it makes him feel alive.

STOP MOVING, DROW! he screams above the wind. You lay a hand on that girl and you die first tonight. I swear it by Desna, Shelyn, Gorum and any other absentee God still out there watching this Hell.

If we sacrifice that defenceless girl so that we can live then that's not living at all in my book. How could we do that and look her father in the eye again, or eachother or...

Ben..

...anyone! Knowing that the world had gone so bad that we were willing to trade children for maybe just a few more hours, scratching and clawing at survival. Well, I won't do it.

I say we make these mongrels regret they ever laid eyes on us! The rest of you get across that bridge as best you can.

She uses the round Lenneth is talking to call her dancing lights back to illuminate the area [free action) and then to pull and read a scroll (shield). With wand of Flaming Sphere in hand she takes a step forward. We too are a pack. Only one pack will survive this fight. Tali, you must choose if you are part of this pack or not. "Don't. You. Dare." Lenneth snarls at Tali as some of them assume defensive positions and others scramble to start moving across the bridge. "Polonius is right. If we're willing to sacrifice the weakest, the defenseless, or even our friends just to buy another week, day, hour, or minute...then we're no better than animals!" Though her words come from a place of anger, there's also an underlying sense of shame as she briefly recalls her thoughts of giving Lilith over to Tsuto back at the farmhouse. "I suggest you reconsider your options and quickly."

As the wolves gather to the she-wolf in preparation of their impending assault, Lenneth backs towards the rope but allows Lilith and the others to begin crossing. "Dark one, am I? Perhaps you'd like a taste of the darkness yourself!" she cries, words of magic flowing from her lips as she points directly at the great she-wolf. Not even waiting to see whether her magic takes hold or not, she begins to will the ground beneath the wolves' feet to turn to mud.

Valex has barely taken three steps before his foot shoots out from under him on a slimy board. His eyes wide, he flails about for a handhold...

climb: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (1) - 1 = 0

Wow. Just...wow.

Lenneth falls back as the wolves surge forward as one, one foot nearly slipping off the edge of the ravine. Cursing her inability to inflict harm as Polonius and Lilith do, she instead focuses on the ground beneath the wolves' feet, willing as much of it to turn to mud as possible.

"Across or down, they're our only means of escape!" she cries.

>>>MAP<<<

Swamp's Grasp to try and get as many wolves as she can, priority on the ones attacking Euron and the big she-wolf but she'll try to get the ones attacking Tali as well if she can.

GM Fiendish:

Will the Levitate from Lenneth's Flight hex still work if she either takes hold of someone else or tells them to grab on to her? Or is it just a one-shot deal for Lenneth and whatever she's carrying (and Indigo)?

Bad thing is... Az can´t rage!

Valex slips and his hand shoots out to grab hold of something, anything, that will let him keep his balance. The rain-slicked and rotted wood of the bridge holds for a heartbeat, enough for him to meet the eyes of the rest of the party, before the wood crumbles beneath his fingers and he drops like a stone to the dark beneath.

Euron's polearm catches one wolf in the side as it barrels in to him, as he recovers and his sickle strikes out, it opens the throat of the same wolf and it collapses to the clifftop with blood gushing from its neck.

Polonius' bomb explodes just behind the white wolf, causing it to momentarily cringe in surprise at the force of the explosion. Another wolf turns and snaps at the tongue of fire that caught it and singed its fur.

Lilith, flaming spheres can only move 30 ft in a round, have moved it for you on the map but that one didn't get all the way to the wolves this round

Lilith's second sphere catches the wolf harassing Euron and scorches its back, leaving red and cracked hairless skin in its wake.

Lenneth's powers cause a large section of the already muddy clifftop to become sucking quagmire, though it doesn't seem to impede the wolves attacks.

Lenneth:
Whilst levitate specifically only affects you, it allows you to move 400 lbs of weight, so I read that as you plus one other person (plus gear and of course Indigo).

AzmeraiBot
Tired and unable to summon his usual rage, Azmerai clasps his sword two handed and still delivers a strong slash at one of the wolves attacking him...
2h longsword: 1d20 + 8 - 1 - 2 ⇒ (6) + 8 - 1 - 2 = 11 BAB,STR-fatigue-shaken
...however burning muscles don't move fast enough and the wolf evades the blow.

Tali lashes out again with her blades, but is unable to catch the fast moving wolves as they continue to snap at her. One clamps its jaws on her chest and you hear a grinding snap as a rib breaks and Tali screams in pain.

The white wolf smells the blood in the air and tries to go for the easiest prey, Euron lying on his back, but unable to see her teeth close on his boot without injuring him.

The singed wolf is too distracted by Lilith's flaming sphere and misses but its brother strikes true, inflicting a nasty bite on Euron's leg 4 piercing damage

The two circling Azmerai both strike together, and whilst the barbarian is able to block one of them, the other gets past his guard and takes a chunk from his thigh 5 piercing damage (before DR), the blow is too much for Azmerai to maintain his balance and he joins Euron and Tali on the ground.

NOTE: could you please all provide a current status with your next post, thanks

With a move action Lilith continues to roll the sphere onto the wolf to the SE of Euron. The second sphere does not have to be moved and continues to burn at its target.

Sphere 1: 3d6 ⇒ (3, 3, 3) = 9 DC 13 Reflex to avoid damage
Sphere 2: 3d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 3) = 10 DC 13 Reflex to avoid damage

At the end of her turn Sphere 1 winks out of existence with a puff of smoke. As her standard action she retrieves a scroll from her pack.

Ok. That is 5 rounds total of Flaming Sphere without a single total being above average damage. Sigh.

Valex, NO! he yells as he sees the man slip from the edge.

He pushes down a sudden rush of guilt and sickening feeling to hurl a bomb at the white wolf but it lands short, luckily not harming his friends either side.

Bomb landed short, I can exclude Azmerai and Euron but the white wolf takes six damage or half with a DC 15 reflex save

Everyone get to the bridge, next round I'm ending this. I'm going to take these wolves with me.

Some food for thought: Tali, Euron and Azmerai are currently prone thanks to the trip-happy wolves. Standing is a move action that provokes, they risk more damage and being tripped again (free trip on all wolf attacks). Prone characters cannot take 5 ft steps but they can crawl 5 ft as a move action, whilst this also provokes at least they can't be tripped again and they will have moved away if they survive the attacks.

Just waiting on Lenneth and Euron. Azmerai, I can keep botting you but that seems silly if you are present to post?!

(KILLED IN ACTION) | Gnome | Alchemist 4

Fiendish, there's an important point about attacks of opportunity that applies here. The attack happens before the action that provoked it is completed. So if Euron stands, the wolf attacks as he is just beginning to move, bites him, can't trip him because he is already prone but then he finishes his action and stands. It was something pathfinder changed from 3.5 to prevent an infinite trip loop in this situation. Although they might take damage, the guys can stand and move or stand and attack in the same round.

Ah thank you for pointing that out Polonius :)

No probs, I think we need all the help we can get lol. What happened to Valex??

The last you saw of Valex he slipped and fell... :(

Euron continues to strike out at the wolves from the floor. Knowing any time they attack him it gives the others time to run.

Attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15
Damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6

The flaming balls of fire, sputtering from the heavy rain, batter themselves against the wolves. The already burned one S of Euron is wise and ducks, but its brother to Euron's SW doesn't move fast enough, and earns a scorched head and neck for its carelessness. As it howls in anguish, Euron's sickle slices out and carves a furrow its neck. It lurches drunkenly to one side and collapses, panting desperately as it bleeds out with no strength to remain standing.

The flimsy scavenged containers Polonius has been using for his alchemical explosives simply cannot withstand the driving rain and fierce winds, as another bomb is blown off course. The spurting flames manage to catch the white wolf across its flank, sending it spinning around and snapping at the air with deadly force.

As Azmerai stands, the wolves around him take advantage and nip at his unprotected legs 3 then 5 damage (pre DR), he manages to back away towards the rest of the group standing by the rope bridge.

Tali swings her knives ineffectually at the wolves, and screaming in fear crawls towards the edge of the cliff. One wolf's jaws close on her thigh leaving a gaping wound which bleeds profusely as she kicks the wolf away weakly. Seeing the wolves about to chase again, with the last of her strength she rolls and flings herself over the edge, hanging there for just a moment before drifting in to the darkness and out of sight.

Cheated of its prey, the wolf following Tali sights Lenneth and rushes to attack, surpising her and biting her ankle inflicting 5 damage. Just as it seems it is about to knock her feet out from under her, its back legs slip and it loses its hold.

The white wolf smells Euron, and instinctively working with her brother, both dart forward at once. Though unable to see clearly, being so close she easily manages to tear in to the oracle, clamping on to his arm and wrenching it as it shakes its head. The brother wolf attacks the already wounded leg, leaving multiple puncture wounds. 4 then 6 damage

The remaining three wolves, sensing their prey escaping, leap towards Azmerai all flashing teeth and scrabbling claws. Their razor sharp jaws inflict deep wounds 6, 4 and 4 damage (pre DR) yet somehow the half-orc does not succumb to their attempts to pull him down to the ground.

Damage: 3d6 + 3 ⇒ (4, 1, 3) + 3 = 11

We can get out of this but you need to get it together!

This time he throws his bomb with greater accuracy. It explodes at the feet of the wolf assaulting Azmerai causing it to howl in pain.

The bomb will hit the wolf directly west of Azmerai and cause splash damage to the ones directly above and below. I can exclude Az and due to Splash Weapon Mastery have an extra square affected by splash. That will be on the white wolf so all those take 6 damage or half with a DC 15 reflex save
