A misfire and trying to get them to come to me.
I think I might be suicidal. Maybe. Though, I hope I hit something next time.

*Crosses Fingers*
Here's hoping. And not the death of me!
Kent Atherton |
Kent angry. Kent smash puny goblins, then get someone to help dog.
The first game I played with Kent a similar thing happened; we were playing Jade Regent (one of the reasons I wanted to play that or RotRL with him, he's in the town) and I had built him such that I realized he was incapable of hitting a goblin without dropping it to 0 HP. Anything other than minimum damage was a KO, and even minimum was take a standard action and KO. Punting goblins is a time-honored tradition for Kent, even if he's never gotten past 2nd level in a game.
Torvald Ragnir |
That's what I'm hoping too, but I'm pretty concerned about casualties here. I'm not familiar with RotRL but there are a *lot* of goblins and townsfolk tend to not be the hardiest people. Plus I've only got a few spells and my heal skill is not amazing. Banking on a proper priest in town. We'll hardly become the legendary Flame in the Darkness if the streets are running red with blood!
Anyway, if I recall corectly, Mary has a wizard or sorcerer nearby, judging by the hands engulfed in lightning. This should be manageable. Hopefully.
Tsakua |
I think it was a pretty slick idea, and I can't wait to see how it goes, but I agree, i hope we can make it through this with the most possible 'folks alive. Don't want to have to face an angry Ven if his daughter dies.
Mary Morrickson |
We will be here when you get back. So no problems!
Mary Morrickson |
So with my musket, it wasn't a ka-Boom, it was a ka-thunk. So I don't think it made much noise.

Thanks everyone. Do any of you know much about the Dallas area? That's where I'll be moving to, and I've only spent about a week there.
Also, tips for when you're moving for a career position? I'm fresh out of school, and this is really the first time I've had to seriously consider things like permanent housing.
@Mary, yep. If it's like the blackpowder misfires I've seen, it will be spectacularly unexciting.
Torvald Ragnir |
I'm afraid my knowledge of Dallas is limited to words like "Texas", "hot", and "JFK", which I doubt is of much help to you.
The best advice I can give you about housing is to take a little time to figure out what really matters to you. Hate commuting? Want lots of space? Does it need to be quiet? And once you know what you want out of your new home, focus on that.
If you have debt from school, also don't be afraid to live cheaply for a year or two and use the money you save to pay down that debt. Doubling or tripling your payments for a couple of years can save you tens of thousands of dollars in the long run. 35-year-old you will appreciate today-you's sacrifice. This also lets you get a better feel for the city to decide where you'd really like to live.
Mary Morrickson |
From what I read of Texas, you might want to be careful there if you are anything but a white man. But aside from that, you should be fine.

Ditto this. Living within your means is one of the best things you can do, no matter what your circumstances.

Definitely. This should be pretty easy as I'm used to frugal student mode and don't have a family to worry about. Plan is to be debt free within the first year. It'll be tight, but I'm lucky enough to have finished with a single small loan and a minimum of other debts.
Thanks for the advice on housing Torvald. Thus far my only criteria for housing have been cost and closeness to campus. I don't really know what I'd actually enjoy in a place.

As a someone who looks like a prospective member of the Hitler Youth, I should be fine. ;)

Looks like we are waiting for Kent's next move. And I think this is getting rather exciting.
DM Grey |
I agree! And thank you, the effort you guys make in bring your characters to life is making this really enjoyable.
I will be saying goodbye to the Cascades tomorrow, so no post friday evening or saturday, probably. I'll be able to update Sunday and possibly Monday morning, then it's off to the Oregon coast. Probably be back Wednesday. Thursday begins the great migration to that hot and humid... I'd call it a hole but it's too flat for that. ^_^
I have no idea when I'll be able to post or how long it will take. I might update everyday, or you may not hear from me for about a week. I really don't know.
Hopefully we can get combat finished before then and into a situation where everyone is able to meet and socialize. That's my goal anyway.
Yes, just waiting for Kent.
Kent Atherton |
Sorry! Just went back up to eight hours a day (they say eight, but I'm there from 3 PM to 12 AM? Sounds like 9 to me), so I've been pretty tired. I had to go down to 6 because of health issues, so a three hour jump in my work day has left me fairly exhausted.
Posting once I take the dog out around the block for the night.
EDIT: Done! And I agree, everyone's doing a great job at making dynamic characters. It's nice, and a good group dynamic keeps things rolling smoothly more so than anything else here on the forums.
Also, as for moving, don't sweat it. We'll be around when you get back, even if it takes you a week or so to get settled in. When you know when you'll be back, just let us know.
Kent Atherton |
This is part of why I generally prefer having maps for combat, because I wasn't sure where the area of the grease spell was. If I remember, the GM mentioned we'd try out using maps for later combats. I have a lot of experience with Roll20--I'm running three campaigns on here using it--so I'm down to help with maps if needed.
Tsakua |
Torvald doesn't seem like the type to put himself on unsure footing, and probably would stay away from grease unless it was absolutely necessary.
Nice shot for Mary. i'm wondering how well it'll be heard in the town, something like that might cause everyone to pause for a second in surprise.
Mary Morrickson |
Thanks Tsakua, I aim to make things pop. Hm, looks like all that is I can see is the goblin on the rat thing. While I know what it most likely be, my character does not. Hopefully it will go pop!
Kent Atherton |
Hey, I might be AWOL for a little bit, my laptop has a busted LCD screen. I dunno how long it'll take for me to find a place to get it fixed for a reasonable price, but I expect it'll be done by Friday. I have a desktop, but it's usually being used by someone else, so my posting may be less reliable.
Granted, with the DM moving and all, I don't think it will cause too much of a problem.
Mary Morrickson |
Checking in. Just seeing who is here. Anyway, with what I said earlier up thread, I am curious what are your plans in terns of leveling?
Torvald Ragnir |
I check the campaign 2-3 times a day just to maintain the habit, but it sounds like this is just going to be a down week.
For leveling I don't have a clear plan right now. For this kind of thing I like to do it organically with some input from the campaign player's guide. That way I get better at facing the kinds of things we've been facing, which feels more natural to me.
Kent Atherton |
Yeah, I'm expecting we'll be up an running again some time next week, after GM has managed to get into his new place down in Texas. As for leveling, Kent'll be going into Barbarian for a few levels, and he'll slowly become a monstrous tank that shrugs off being essentially cut in half through the power of DR.
Tsakua |
i've actually never been able to participate in a group that lasted long enough to get a character past level 1...they've always fizzled out too quickly. so i'm just going to see how it happens. :) any suggestions are always welcome.
Kent Atherton |
I'd be open to some teamwork feats. Some of them are pretty interesting, and they could do well to help us out. We'd have to take a look at some of them and see which fit the party best, though. I imagine we'll have to act tactically as a party as well, given our lack of certain standard combat options.
Also, I'm gonna need to get my laptop replaced most likely, since it's not worth it to fix my LCD screen. Shouldn't affect my posting, but it might. Figured I'd let you know.
Mary Morrickson |
I guess I could too, but I kinda have an idea on what my character build would be like. Though I am open to suggestions.
Torvald Ragnir |
Here are a few feats that look interesting. Keep in mind that for this to work, these would require at least two and potentially all of us take the feat.
Broken Wing Gambit might work to lure enemies in and let them get beaten. Probably this would make sense for me, Tsakua, and Kent. Trading some hit points for two extra attacks is a good move I think, but it does complicate our somewhat limited amount of healing.
Combat Medic on the other hand would be valuable in keeping people alive. Maybe this isn't worth a feat, but stabilization would be automatic this way.
Covering Fire would make Mary even more valuable on the field, and give us a little more staying power.
Extend the Bulwark is similar. If we fight as a unit, we could boost AC quite a bit, 3-4 points.
Outflank would be great for Tsakua and Kent, if they work together to maximize it.
Shielded Caster is probably not very necessary, but a bonus to concentration checks wouldn't hurt in the middle of a tough fight.
Spirit of the Corps will make certain buffs go further.
Target of Opportunity would allow for more attacks with some tactical placement.
Wild Flanking does not seem like a great idea to me, but it's amusing. I could see people losing themselves in battle.
Kent Atherton |
Broken Wing Gambit would work best with Kent as the person being attacked, since he'd be stocking up on DR whenever possible. He'd be taking less damage, so he doesn't care much about being hit.
Combat Medic is interesting, but Kent will be investing in Diehard, so he's essentially up and fighting, or dead. For the rest of the party that could be very useful.
Covering fire could be interesting, although technically all parties involved need Point-Blank Shot, which is a feat the rest of us have little use for, unless I was going rebuild Kent as a Shield Champion.
Extend the Bulwark could be useful, provided Tsakua doesn't mind losing the normal Brawler AC bonus to get heavier armor. I was planning on going into heavier armor, so I don't mind much.
Outflank is awesome, and we should totally invest in that. You can start really hammering on foes when that +4 kicks on all around.
Spirit of the Corps could be potentially very useful, but depending on the amount of buffs we use its pretty varied as to if it's worth it to use.
Target of Opportunity is an excellent feat, but it does require us to make a ranged attack. If the DM would allow us to make it work with melee attacks, Mary could become a real ranged powerhouse, taking AoO's on everything we fight.
Wild Flanking sounds hilarious. It isn't potentially the BEST choice, but I like it thematically.
