The Veteran's Vault

The ramshackle tenement outside of Korvosa softly echoes with the sound of light rain as Venture-Captain Sir Canayven Heidmarch begins his briefing. "For this mission you will have to venture into the sewers beneath Korvosa. Sascha Antif-Arah," he announces, gesturing to a haggard human woman who is past her prime but whose posture expresses confidence and experience, "requires access to a particular vault. The society is going to help her."

Sascha eyes each Pathfinder in turn then nods to herself with some satisfaction and steps forward gracefully. "Some years ago my friends and I had made quite a name for ourselves around Korvosa, and our adventures earned us a considerable amount of gold. We stashed most of it in one of the Vaults after evicting the cult that had already claimed it."

Sascha pauses for a moment, smiles, and shakes her head as if recalling particularly amusing details of the raid. "Anyway, I retired from the business after that, started up a shop, and lived peacefully until I got into trouble with the Hellknights."

"I can’t show my face in Korvosa because I don’t fancy spending my retirement in shackles, but I’m willing to cede my share of the loot in that Vault to you. It’s no dragon’s hoard, but it should be more than worth your time. The only thing I want from there is an old locket—nothing magical or worth fencing, but it means a lot to me. Once I have it, I’m getting out of this place and off to somewhere the Order of the Nail has no sway."

"The entrance shouldn’t be too hard to find, assuming you know what to look for," she remarks as she fishes several folded papers from her haversack. "There’s an old service entrance into the sewers about a quarter mile north of my old shop in Midland; I wrote down directions that should lead you to the vault. There’s a big room inside, and I stashed my share under the flagstones in one of the small chambers nearby."

She extracts a few more items from her bag and holds them out. "I hope you don’t need these, but you never know. I certainly won’t be using them in my retirement. Good luck to you, Pathfinders."

The items Sascha grants the party include three +1 aberration bane arrows, two antitoxins, a vial of antiplague, (Pathfinder RPG Ultimate Equipment 100) and an alkali flask (Ultimate Equipment 106). Sascha can identify their respective functions for you. So feel free to look them up, without using identifying magic.

This would also be the time for character introductions, and questions about the mission ;)

Dot, trophy huntress ready.

With all these men so silent, seems i'm the first for introductions.
A young woman steps forward. Clad in leather armor and a necklace made of wildlike claws and teeth give her the impression of somebody who's been in more than one hunt.

"I am Muchiko. I grew up in Tranau till the age of 6. I've joined with the society a few years back.

I'd like to ask, will there be any safeguard traps we should expect? Particular creatures or traps?"

Aeilín stands in the corner of the room, sizing-up the each occupant while listening to the old woman's tale. The room's dim light glints off of the metal plates of her four-mirror armor and greatsword hilt rising over her shoulder.

"What of your... friends, and their shares? Have they also abandoned plans to return to this vault?"

Making a fist and grasping it with his other, Dagnobar bows to the group. "Greetings. I shall be honored to perform this task with such esteemed comrads."

Dagnobar then swings his fists in the air, making some whooshing sounds as he practices his combat kata.

Sascha nods before answering Muchiko's questions. “Korvosa’s sewers have lots of blackboil alligators, so I wouldn’t go for a swim unless you really have to. My group ran into some other strange creatures years ago, but our scholar usually identified them for us; I don’t remember what they were. And traps... traps... hmm, I can't recall any. But, who knows if any have been placed during the time I've spent elsewhere.”

“My comrades have no doubt claimed their own shares over the years. My share should still be there, they know well enough to avoid taking any of mine,” Sascha replies to Aeilín.

With a smile Sascha looks at Dagnobar. "Good to see you're so eager."

Xander is . . . unimpressive to look at. He is neither tall nor short, has a hair style typical for many westgaters and a simple scholars outfit. The only two items that might catch an observer’s attention are his clear purple eyes and the large scorpion that is usually sitting on his shoulder or scampering his arm.

I am Xander. It sounds like an interesting challenge. Any particular opponents we should plan for?

Misarru leans in the corner of the room against the wall.

"I hope your companions were trustworthy, I've known some that would steal your purse and sell your kidneys too if they'd get the chance. So as to traps I'm sure someone found secret stashes of treasure and will no doubt have them guarded."

The tiefling flicks a knife in his hands and looks to the others in the room.
"I'll try to get you safely past any traps we find, or locked doors for that matter." He adds murmuring.

"Just make sure that I get safely through any earlier troubles, eh?"

He looks rather full of himself, flicking a knife and saying "we" have to make sure he gets through?

"Surely you're not that squishy?"

"Besides the creatures I mentioned?" Sascha asks Xander, "Unless the Hellknights follow you, there are no opponents that I can think of."

"I once met a man named Bonecrusher. He was less impressive than you would think."

"The Hellknights are a bunch of knightly orders that enforce the law with an iron hand and maintain order at all costs. The laws of their various orders emulate the most organized and effective armies in all the planes: the legions of Hell. They don't care about morality, they don't care about methods, they care only about results. If people can't be trusted to obey the law, the Hellknight learn them to obey out of fear. The order you'll find in Korvosa is the Order of the Nail."

"If you want to know why they're after me... Apparently accidentally stepping onto the streets between Hellknights and a wanted criminal indicates that a completely innocent citizen is an accomplice. I was unjustly convicted, but I’d rather not test the local law enforcement’s patience by trying my luck out there."

Rabbai pulls a cloak around his shoulders and a thin stream of sand streams out from one of the folds. He coughs and says
I'll keep an eye on all of our backs as surely as I watch my own, red man. You seem confident - I'm glad for that. Hold your end up and I'll hold mine.
He grins and winks at the man tossing the knife, glances around the rest of the room, his grin fading quickly - he readjusts his sandy cloak and resumes his silence and gaze at the ground.

Vitarri adjusted his armor, smiling at the satisfactory creak of the belts as the Gorumite thought of the coming expedition into the unknown vault. He made his way over to Muchiko, surprised to see a familiar face in such a diverse looking group. His white feathers were slicked back as before and he was sporting some new scars from his, thankfully brief, playtime with a certain Chelish Noblewoman.

"Muchiko! I see you survived since last we met." He is honestly warmer this time then last, his cold demeanor changed since the last mission. Seeing the others his semi-neutral tone crept into his voice as he introduced himself. "Vitarri."

At 6'5" he makes for an imposing figure, clad in his armor. He carried a battered greatsword across his back and a longbow that had seen better days as well. He had the walk of a man who had seen battle many times and underneath the armor he had the scars to prove he had suffered greatly in his life.

He has white hair, gold colored eyes that shine in the dark and a pale complexion. Behind his ears and along the back of his head he has scattered sets of white feathers that sweep back along his skin, emphasizing how inhuman he was. A pair of vestigial wings sit flat against his back, barely anything more then decoration as they are undersized and too weak to bear him aloft or even glide. Bearing the marks of having been binded at one point.

Navigating Korvosa

Once everyone has gathered, the party sets out to find the vault. The Midland district, packed with markets and banks, bustles with commercial activity despite the drizzling rain, and you have no trouble finding the concealed sewer entrance in the secluded alley with the help of Sascha’s directions.

Ah sewers. Before we dive in I suggest we parse out the equipment Sascha provided. I don't have any use for the arrows though I am sure there are a few of you who do. I suggest our front line carries the anti toxin and anti plague as they seem most likely to need it. I can carry the alkali flask unless someone else feels a burning need for it. Muchiko draws her spear.
"Sure, anything that comes close can havea taste of our weapons."

A rusty, slime-encrusted steel ladder descends into the Korvosan sewers, whose tunnels stretch to the north, east, and south like roads in an underground city. Curtains of fungus and mold hang from the ceilings, which rise roughly ten feet above the tunnels’ walkways, which run along either side of the sewage channels. Occasional dim patches of light filter in from the streets above providing minimal illumination. Despite the sickening smell of decay, the tunnels are free of garbage, waste, and the other byproducts of Korvosan life.

The sewer tunnels are roughly 8 feet tall, and the water flows leisurely, requiring a DC 10 Swim check to traverse.

Even with the DC doubled for not having the space for a running start, Dagnobar's roll covers the jump neatly :)

While some of the party continue north, more of the tunnel becomes visible. Misarru can see a natural cave across the water. The bricks that once sealed off this natural cave appear to have been removed long ago.

"Togg wants tasty foods," a heavily distorted female voice says. When you look at the end of the northern tunnel, you see a huge creature with several tentacles. Two of the tentacles have huge mouths on them, and one tentacle is filled with eyes. The eyes intently stare at Misarru, who's closest to the creature.

The creature's main mouth, a huge gap filled with sharp teeth located in its round torso, looks like it's grinning. With a roar the creature whips her toothed tentacles across the walls and ceiling."Togg wants foods!"

I am assuming a knowledge dungeoneering would be required to identify our new friend. If nature or arcana apply let me know.

Xander readies an attack with his crossbow for any attack on the part of the creature.

A couple of the eyes turn to look at Dagnobar, while the other eyes continue to stare at Rabbai. “Sewers have lots of food, but I want better food. Food from above! Tasty drinks!” Togg's eyes abruptly all focus on Dagnobar, and she points at the dwarf. “That one looks good. It’s small. No one would notice it’s gone.”

Knowledge nature lets you identify a common plant or animal, but Togg isn't exactly common. I'll still allow it, but I'll give it a high DC.

Xander whispers to his scorpion "Have you ever seen anything like this?"

Knowledge(Nature) to aid another: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (1) - 1 = 0

The pure confusion from the empathic bond is pretty obvious and no help. "Thanks for nothing."

Xander closes his eyes for a moment and try tries to remember if he had read about anything that might come close to the strange creature Togg.
Knowledge(Nature): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (19) + 9 = 28

Turns out the two tentacles with mouths are actually two tentacles with barbs, oops.

Xander immediately recognizes Togg as an otyugh.

Knowledge Nature DC 25:
Otyughs are particularly vile and horrid creatures that lurk in places most sane creatures avoid. Their lairs are middens, cesspools, offal pits, toxic swamps, and sewers—the greater a lair's filth, the greater the draw to the refuse-eating otyugh. They glory in the role of scavenger, wandering through vast underground caverns in search of the choicest cuts of garbage and waste. Upon finding such refuse, they gorge upon it, gathering what cannot be consumed in one debauch to bring back to their foul-smelling lairs. Otyughs spend most of their time in these filthy dens, which they keep constantly filled with carrion, dung, and worse sorts of stinking effluvia.

Intelligent creatures dwelling in subterranean areas near an otyugh often form a partnership of convenience with the disgusting beast. These creatures gladly provide their refuse and piles of raw meat to the otyugh, transforming the creature into an effective form of trash disposal. In return, the otyugh leaves its benefactors alone, and does not attack them, possibly even acting as a guardian.

The most horrifying thing to most races about the notorious otyugh is not the nature of its diet or its choice of lairs, but rather that a creature with an otyugh's tastes can be anything other than a mindless scavenger. In fact, otyughs are surprisingly intelligent, and often quite eager to form alliances with those who offer them a steady supply of delicious diversions in the form of offal and waste. Most otyughs understand the fact that other creatures find them unpleasant and hideous, but few really care.

Hoping nobody notices, Dagnobar slowly takes a 5' step backwards when the creature identifies him as the source of nourishment.
