It's true what Davosh speaks, and while Vojtek's tale is a grim one might any of you have a story to tell? Please tell us what life is like here in Irrisin

Sense motive: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23 Finally the average comes up.....

When none speak up, Edward turns to Nadya offers her a bit of warmed broth from the fire Nadya how about you. I'm sure you have a few stories. Nobody gets a camp set up that precise without lots of practice. So I'm sure your travels are extensive.

Far to the south? Nadya asks Davosh. Just how far, friend? And then, how did you end up here in Irrisen?

Vojtek interjects, probably unwisely, We simply went into a magical portal from which one of the Ancestors came, all dressed in black and bearing the fire of a Mighty Quest in his heart for each of us.

The Barbarian claps his hands suddenly and snaps out, Bampf!. His leathery features crack into a rare and unsettling grin as he laughs at his theatrics. The weathered warrior looks with kind regard on the lady Nadya, and maybe a little more warmth than might be warranted for such a new acquaintance...

A magic portal? Curious. Ve have seen many things in our days, but nothing like that. Nadya's voice drops again, and Davosh notices her lips do not move as she murmurs quietly. Ve can speak only so freely, friends. I love — but do not necessarily trust — all of my kin here. Explain, but do not expound just yet.

Her voice returning to normal after taking a sip from her tea, she continues. It is always vinter in our lands. This is why ve trade with our mammothfolk kin in the East. They see cold, but not Irrisen's cold.

Kappi blurts out, Always winter? But how do you grow enough crops to feed yourselves?

The ordinarily taciturn Vojtek sees this as the opportunity he needed to demonstrate his vast knowledge of hunting and scraping a measure of abundance from harsh winterlands. He will continue until someone stops him.

His soliloquy is well-informed but a bit boorish.

Kappi has some success patching the pots up, making him quite popular with the four peasants for a time.

As Kappi distracts them, Nadya asks a few probing questions about their journey to Irrisen. As Davosh shares their story, nadya grows quiet even as her eyes betray her surprise at the party's exploits. She starts a bit as Edward interrupts the warlock's reverie, but quickly discerns Edward's concern. I assure you, I have no interest in revealing your mission to anyone in Irrisen. But I understand your vorries. Perhaps ve continue this part of our discussion later tonight ven the others sleep?

As the meal begins to wind down, Nadya stares over Ali's shoulder. Ve are no longer alone...

Following Nadya's eyes, you see an odd female, a humanoid creature with the legs of a bald goat, a completely hairless body, and a horned head, standing about two yards tall.

The peasants uncertainly turn to Nadya, who smiles broadly. Of course! Ve have plenty for all!

    Edward:

Edward doesn't detect anything from Mierul when he uses his detect evil ability.

Mierul sits on the edge of the circle, rather far from the fire she sought to share. She is quite chatty with the peasants, sharing numerous folk tales and legends vaguely familiar to each of you, at least in some variation. Eventually the conversation works its way around to the five of you. You lot don't look like residents of Waldsby, she says. Her tone is amiable and pleasant as she swallows a mouthful of stew and breaks into a smile. In fact, you don't look familiar at all!

Instantly, Nadya speaks up. Oh! These are some relatives from — eh — Nadzieja Lato! With an uncomfortable look at Ali, Nadya continues. And their — um — concierge...? Bluff: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14

FWIW, I cast about a lot before settling on that particular word. LOL

Mierul looks at Nadya a moment, then gives a small smile. How interesting! This one must favor your mother, the forlarren says, indicating Vojtek.

Well! Perhaps a little song? Mierul stands and breaks into a rousing tune, singing A cappella; the song is evidently familiar to the peasants, who join in.

Not sure of what to make of Meirul. All of the visual signs, and what he knows about the Forlarren. Being part Fiend, and Part Nymph with the strong tendency of having their Fiend parents outlooks on life makes Edward very suspicious that it is evil. They way that everyone is treating her makes me believe that she is very dangerous and not really a welcome visitor.

The biggest thing that has Edward confused, is that he doesn't feel like she is evil.

My friend, she is but a child of nature seeking shelter from the storm just like we are. But I sure would like to hear her story. Edward says trying to cover for Kappi, and genuinely interested in hearing about her.

Mierul smiles at Kappi's words, and nods as Edward calls her a child of nature. The smile remains as she politely but firmly declines to talk about herself. Oh, no no...that's a depressing story, and not one fit for such a gathering. This should be much more jovial! And she launches into another song, the lyrics of which eerily mirror the founding of the nation of Irrisen.

To his friends Edward's silence is deafening. He is always part of the conversation around the cookfire. Jovial and uplifting regaling in stories passed down from his mentor. But tonight Edwards lips are sealed his eyes never leave the Forlarren. He isn't focused on her, but she is never out of his sight.

Edward hears Nadya's warning, and takes it to heart. He is concerned that if we let agents reach Whitethrone before we get there, our task will prove extra difficult if not impossible to overcome. We are but a few verses a city. A city that doesn't like outsiders of which we obviously are.

Torn between wanting to question her motives, and honor the guest right offered by Nadya. He chooses to stay silent. But he will wait for any opening in the conversation to question her motives or destination.

Edward isn't opposed to a confrontation, he just won't start one. To this matter he will just stay quiet.

Mierul stays until the fire is down to coals before taking her leave now that the storm has passed, having spent well over two hours playing, singing, and storytelling with the group and those members of the party who spoke with her. (We'll presume she asked your names, and that you gave your first names since that's all she gave.)

As the camp settles down for the night and turns quiet around you, Nadya feeds the glowing embers with small log and appears to exhale for the first time since the forlarren appeared. I thank you for indulging our visitor. Ve could not reasonably refuse her request to join us vithout arousing much suspicion and anger. She takes a long pull from a wineskin before continuing. I had not met this Mierul before tonight, so I cannot say vhere her loyalties lie. But better safe than sorry.

The three of you spend quite some time discussing your time before coming through the portal. Edward reluctantly allows Davosh to share the story of the Black Rider, which Nadya recognizes at once as one of Baba Yaga's three heralds. She notes with considerable discomfiture that she has never heard of anything even scratching the Three Riders. Every child in Irrisen knows the tale, she muses. A year and a day before Baba Yaga returns, they arrive to prepare the land for her arrival.

As the story of his words and his blessing/quest are revealed, Nadya is quiet a long moment, then she looks from Edward to Davosh with a genuine sense of wonder. This boon is beyond any I could ever hope to see. Perhaps you truly are the Light Warriors have been sent here by the Lady of Graves herself. The sobriquet is whispered nearly inaudibly, as though swift and terrible retribution would come just from uttering the name.

Eventually you each drift off to sleep; watches are set and kept, but nothing else comes to disturb the night.

In the morning the party awakes to find the camp busy. Nadya works and speaks with a steely determination as the sleds are readied for travel, and she smiles at each of you in turn as you arise. We are ready when you are, friends, she says.

In short order the group sets out, following the muddy, sparse trail. Nadya states the camp must head to Waldsby with haste. Ve are already behind schedule thanks to last night's storm. I hope ve are not too far behind.

Nadya leads the sleds, and has invited Davosh and Edward to join her and her uncle Pyotar (the one who was to be the mantis' lunch) at the front. Liska merrily darts in and out between legs, sleds, dogs, and snow along the way. Between the two main sleds walks a younger couple, Efram and Sofya; the husband appears to be smitten with Ali's elven features, which does not please his wife at all. Acting as rear guards are Ali, Kappi, and Vojtek, along with an elderly woman named Marat. Kappi has found speaking with her to be comforting, reminding him of his grandmother back home. Vojtek has busied himself talking to Ali about accepting her role in the party better. ;-)

About two hours after onset, the little group crests a hill and Nadya freezes in place, staring at the sky. Following her gaze, Edward and Davosh see an unremarkable grey cloud. Just as Davosh is about to turn to her and ask, he sees it: the cloud turns suddenly, and he notices it is in fact a mass of black-feathered birds.

Ve must hide! Nadya hisses, and her uncle moves with surprising agility to one of the sleds, quickly producing several white canvases. Sviftly now! Over the top of the sleds, or we're found out!

Acting as rear guards are Ali, Kappi, and Vojtek, along with an elderly woman named Marat. Kappi has found speaking with her to be comforting, reminding him of his grandmother back home. Vojtek has busied himself talking to Ali about accepting her role in the party better. ;-)

Ali plays along with this, making it seem like she understands a "woman's role," until she can say something like "Yes, my role of sticking bad guys with swords and magic is invigorating!!" and "overseeing the men cooking and cleaning is nice too"

Ve must hide! Nadya hisses, and her uncle moves with surprising agility to one of the sleds, quickly producing several white canvases. Sviftly now! Over the top of the sleds, or we're found out!

Ali wastes no time in grabbing one end of a tarp, throwing the other end to whomever is closest, and tries to use teamwork to cover one sled at a time, as quickly and completely as possible. She only barks directions when necessary--if anyone is frozen in place, confused, or otherwise lollygagging.

When the covering is done, she calls out so her voice carries only to their caravan Everyone under a tarp! Trust Kappi to keep an eye out and stay hidden! At that, she makes eye contact with the young rogue, and gives an affirming nod. She lifts one end of her tarp, ushering folks under before she herself also hides, bow drawn and arrow nocked, listening for any signal Kappi might give.

BTW, did I ever give out xp for the mantis?

No you did not--I just checked

Davosh gives him the Alchemist's Fire, I have one left after this. I also cast Guidance on the sczarni youth.

Vojtek hides near the young lad, laying an assuring hand on his shoulder so the youth knows he has support close at hand.

Vojtek has a long history of hunting with his people, so he is used to this sort of thing. He becomes perfectly still, in a relaxed state of complete readiness. His breath comes in shallow puffs to prevent a cloud of water vapor giving away his location and the barbarian grips his weapon. He silently curses himself for not having a missile weapon and resolves to obtain one at the next opportunity.

I'll use Kappi's first roll as an assist to Marat, and use the second as his own stealth since the Perception check isn't necessary — it's pretty easy to see the mass of birds now.

Vojtek (and anyone else with a +5 or better in Survival) gets a +2 competence bonus on his Stealth check for this case.

That gives Kappi a 27 and Vojtek a 21. Need Stealth checks from Ali, Davosh, and Edward, which can include anything you choose to do that could be done in a round of combat.

Edward helps with the tarp. While he is doing that, he life link's with Kappi and then draws his northern white fur cloak around him, and hides back near the wagons to have them cover his form.

    LOL...Davosh totally stole your 20. :-D

The group and the party scramble to get the tarps over the top of the sleds, then try to get themselves under as well.

    Nadya: 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 8 + 2 = 17
    Pyotar: 1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 + 2 = 24

    Marat: 1d20 + 2 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 + 2 + 2 = 16

Each of the members of the small group manages to secret themselves in short order...all except Efram, who decides this is a perfect opportunity to be bold and dashes over to where Ali is hiding "to help save her."

Uncertain whether she's more upset or offended, Ali gives the Irriseni oaf a shove. But she doesn't realize her own strength; her shove sends Efram off-balance and Ali's flame-red hair is swept up by the wind as the would-be rescuer tumbles out from under the canvas into the snow!

Suffice to say, they've seen Ali and Efram. :-) We'll go into initiative order — this time around everyone can roll their own cos that'll indicate to me that you've finished updating your PC to 3rd level.
