Male Human Slayer 11

Tynan rejoins the others, after re-securing the keep's door. A look of shame is on his face., and he speaks quietly.

"Sorry... I don't know what came over me other than uncontrollable terror. I hope that doesn't happen again."

Male, Gnome

"Naw, out of your control. I have a spell that can help, Or rather I have a scroll, but I couldn't get it out in time with all that was going on - so I apologize for that!" he grins, feeling a little badly that he helped Mort over Tynan. Still, Mort's injuries might have been fatal - he looks to see what Theo does next.

Solrisa offers Tynan a smile.

"Oh, Tynan, look! Green wormies!" Solrisa says pointing to the obvious. She seems oblivious that Tynan even left....which is both good and bad, I suppose.

"Don't worry though. Ascaria is really good at this. And I'm helping."

Without taking his eyes off of Theo Mortimer responds, "Don't sweat it. Could have happened to anyone."

Ascaria:

It's hard to be certain, but a faint red line does seem to have raised along Theo's left ear. From what you've seen of Mortimer and Rauffe, you'd gauge that the lucky worm to have made its way into Theo entered in front of his ear, and tunneled through the canal leading into the skull. It's a much smaller opening than the base of the skull, but it serves just as well for accessing the brain pan. The worm would have needed to squeeze, but you're fairly sure this worm succeeded where Mort's and Rauffe's worms failed.

As Theo's eyes sink in, you're fairly sure you can hear the worm moving within the skull. Mortimer's blow knocked him into blissful unawareness. Theo is well and truly dead, now. And yet, the body still shows signs of movement. Do you continue to observe Theo's metamorphosis, and, if so, do you seek to understand it through different means than your Heal?

The gnome studies Theo closely. Almost too closely, for some of you.

Not liking what he sees, he seeks to learn more. He drops the wand of curing and casts Diagnose Disease.

Ascaria mumbles as he studies the advance of the worm through the body, ”Mort, stay here. Sol, stay sharp, Theo is no longer with us… but something is.”

|Roll20 Link- Carrion Crown| |Roll20 Link- Age of Worms|

Ascaria:

A very familiar pattern unfolds before you, woven of glistening tendrils which writhe in front of Theo's forehead. What you see before you becomes something of a horror. The tendrils start to radiate outwards and downwards from Theo's head. It starts to take shape, as the nerves of the human body appear like branches of a tree. Hovering above Theo's prone form is another, wormy version of the man.

This worm acts differently from Davy's, Elliot's, and Marzena's. It's aggressive. It doesn't wait, and it reproduces quickly. You can't see its reproduction directly, perhaps thankfully. It needed to attack the brain first, reducing the man's Intelligence like a wild fire. Marzena has benefited both from a slower course of disease, and your initial restoration of her, and her alone, back in the Twisted Branch Lair. She is suffering from a reduction of Constitution, instead.

You gauge that you have 1d3 ⇒ 1 rounds before Theo rises as a Spawn of Kyuss.

Male, Gnome

Ascaria, bowed over the body in rapt attention at the study of a new disease gets closer and closer to the former human, until he finally snaps - and recoils.

"There is nothing left to save." he mumbles sorrowfully.

"Quickly! Kill him, he's about to rise up as another of those things." he points to the dead undead on the floor.

Rauffe doesn't need to be told twice. He stands and exits the room, givin you all more space to deal with Theo.

Theo becomes Spawn. His eyes collapse, the lids pulling inwards to line the eye sockets, making copious room for the worms beginning their way outwards. Theo's mouth pulls back, exposing teeth that now serve a more pointed purpose. The skin begins a steady undulation, as the worms within gain their stride.

As Mortimer strikes down at the horror, he pulls both hands free, with 1d4 ⇒ 1 worm now present on the giant's appendages. The'o Spawn begins to rise...

Solrisa steps aside and allows Mortimer to give the Dragon's Mercy to Theo. She is momentarily saddened, but then brightens when Mort finishes the pugilistic coup d' worm.

"Oh Mort! That as good mercy," Solrisa says solemnly closing Theo's eyes. [smalller]"May the Dragon guide you to Pharasma's psychopomps, Theo."[/smaller]

Solrisa takes a minute or two to collect herself before beginning to clean up.

|Roll20 Link- Carrion Crown| |Roll20 Link- Age of Worms|

Mortimer does, in fact, finish off the newly-born undead, as both Solrisa and Ascaria lend their own slaps to the giant's arms, killing the worm, now worms, working their way up.

The body yields forth more worms, but none of them succeed in running the room, and securing new hosts, before they die from exposure.

And with that, we are out of initiative. Also, please Level Up to 6.

Male Human Brawler (17), Thief (0)

The tension leaving Mort's body as Sol and Ascaria slap him around various live creepy worms off of him is clearly discernible in his entire body's demeanor. His body appears to deflate as a look of relief adorns his face.

"Whew. Thanks guys, that's great!" He eagerly looks forward to really getting cleaned up. "Maybe we should finish up resting here, then go out to meet whatever caught Cassie - uh -- The Bird's eye at first light?"

Ascaria channels to harm undead, just to be sure all the worms are gone. He’s quiet, for now, about the disease, but he does say, ”The worms work differently depending on their nature. Marzena should be OK as her disease is slower, and possibly more insidious, but I think we can help her. These…” he shudders, ”These are faster acting. I’m going to need another healer’s kit.”

Eventually, he tries to get back to sleep so he can gather his powers again in the morning. He'll sleep very late...

"Oh -- right! exclaims Mortimer. "That reminds me -- what kind do you think is in The Jar from the observatory? It's been wiggling around in there. Do we need to destroy it too?"

He becomes lost in thought for a minute.

Either now or in the morning, whenever we actually hit lvl 6...

Solrisa smiles, remembering what Ascaria says about Marzena.

"Oh, Ascaria, listen! Let me try. I like to help. Maybe the Dragon will allow me to help," Solrisa says cheerfully. "I promise not to hurt them."

Solrisa leans over Marzena, stroking her hair.

"Marzena, the Dragon wants you to live. I want you to live. Put your faith in the Dragon, okay?" Solrisa gives Marzena a big smile and focuses her mind on the cleansing of the Dragon.

Once awake, Ascaria sequesters himself in the basement, sitting on the bed. He takes a relatively fresh piece of paper out and begins to draw. Across the top he draws a series of worms, detailed closeups. Below each worm is a short series of images showing how that worm ravages its victim. The drawings are mostly done in an accurate style, at least at the top. The style gets looser further down as the feeling the worms cause comes out in the art.

To make sure the work is accurate (complex or superior: DC 20), Ascaria sets aside his inner muse and concentrates on being thorough and methodical.
Take 10 Craft Drawing: 10 + 11 = 21

As he draws, the occasional green light filters along the lines and smudges of his work. Ascaria doesn’t notice…

When the drawing is finished, he ponders on it a while before seeking out the others. He learns of what Sol has done, ”Excellent!” he cries, happy that Sol has the power to remove the worst of the diseases if he cannot.

He follows it up with a Diagnose Disease on Marzena to make sure, beyond doubt, that it worked. He also 'links' her to his healing stream, just in case.

|Roll20 Link- Carrion Crown| |Roll20 Link- Age of Worms|

The black of early morning yields to the dawn's rising. The men of Blackwall walk about their duties in quiet resignation. They are the twice-defeated. Losing Theo has taken a heavy toll, as the fresh mourning is the more painful. Davy and Elliot seeded themselves in the minds of their brothers as already dead men, newly resurrected from the Mistmarsh though they were.

Sampson doesn't need to order, nor seems to have the heart to do so. He joins Rauffe, Jurdan, Danyel, and Joppa in cleaning the basement, and wrapping the bodies for pyre burning. Rauffe makes a strong case for overturning everything, keeping club and torch nearby should a worm be uncovered. Every once and awhile, you see the soldiers, to a man, flinch from phantom worm, running to the nearest person, and petition an inspection, just to be sure. It's likely this disorder will take time to settle in their minds.

It is amidst this work that you find no resistance to your audience with Marzena, Mage of Blackwall Keep, Plague Bearer. Hers is a shallow breathing, as the new day takes from her yet more health. She resists with the strength of an old, infirm woman. Solrisa easily catches a hand that lashes out at her, as Marzena swats at a dream thistle branch.

Solrisa's touch seems impotent at first glance, as well as second. The healing of her hand doesn't bring any color to Marzena's face.

Solrisa:

It sees your hand. It moves, at the last moment, and you fail. It moves again, restricted in its movement, but enough to avoid you again. You see something distend in Marzena's stomach, trying for you through the woman's viscera. If only it were bigger...

It is with the third touch that things change. The woman's jaw relaxes, and her eyes take in the room with infinitely greater attention, as if a smoke has cleared.

Ascaria confirms the absence of disease, when his magics find nothing like the disease previously detected. Surely, the worm is now dead. Further confirmation of your curative work comes in the form of Marzena's desire to rise, and speak with you all in the kitchen. She asks for a private moment, to allow herself time to compose and ready herself.

She joins you shortly, wearing a purple dress with gold trim. "I do not know where to begin. Yes, I do, actually. Thank you. I believe I owe you my life, for what you've done. I didn't expect to set eyes on Blackwall ever again, and yet..." Her eyes begin to glisten with tears she quickly dismisses with the sleeve of her dress. "And yet, here we are. Sadder, but wiser. I need... clarity. I need to hear your accounting. I would know from what fate I was spared. It was a worm, wasn't it? Tell me. I'm alright. I need to know."

Male, Gnome

Has everyone been healed? Ascaria, in the morning, checks everyone carefully - taking 20 on the heal when possible, taking 10 when not, and if he thinks he finds something, he confirms with Diagnose Disease. Base Heal +10. I also have lessor restoration if anyone is still down con from the worms.

Ascaria takes out his worm drawing and places it on the table before her. He points, ”It was that one. Not as quick in its actions as that one over there which attacked us last night and took Theo. These here are weaker, but yours was a nasty brute. It saps your strength, slowly over days, until, I believe, you become one of them in the end. In any event, it would have been your death.” he nods to Sol.

”Allustan said you were studying the worms? Is that true? If so, what have you discovered?”

Solrisa smiles brightly, offering the woman a happy joy hug when it is clear her Dragon did what she thought it might.

"I hope you feel better! Those wormies are not good," Solrisa agrees with Ascaria. "Mort, look! She's better!"

The only one who suffers still is Marzena. She's quite low in her Constitution, but at least it's no longer draining...

The older woman accepts the maiden's embrace, wincing only a little at the strength of it. Marzena's frame is more skeletal than her dress portrays. She heartens to Ascaria's offer to restore her further. The color returns to her face, as does the roundness about her cheeks. It becomes easier to tell the woman who brings a flush to Allustan's own cheeks...

Marzena takes in the drawings, becoming so engrossed, it takes her a moment before she answers the gnome. "These are quite good, Ascaria. This drawing here, where you depict the worm's mouth, as if looking through a magnifying glass... to this one, which seems to accurately represent the actual size of the worm, as if laid on paper... it's hard to confuse the worm description, when accompanied by this art." She pats the paper, reverentially.

"Yes, I have tried to document sightings, as much as I could, once I realized that certain stories began to sound similar. Largely for the Mistmarsh, which can inspire hyperbolic storytelling for every monster sighted just beyond genuine focus. Undead with some wormy lace, well, that just sounds like embellishment, but the stories I gathered spoke of worm infestations, and loved ones returning from the hunt newly transformed into one of those... things. The creatures sound less like mindless zombies, and more like something intent on seeing others turned to its fate. The stories spoke mainly of the burrowing. I didn't realize that we had..." She pauses for some time, then her eyes widen. "We were made to drink... from smoky vials... and yet, I felt nothing of a bolus pass down my throat, when I did..." She clenches her fists, and slowly sets them on the kitchen table, where the blood rises to the surface of her hands' skin.

"It is this I shared with Allustan. The increasing frequency of the sightings, the vague description of the condition of the undead, as it relates to the worms. I have not seen worms unearthed from graves, nor have I heard of anyone transformed by anything other than one of the undead." She relaxes her fists, then points to the papers.

"We need to share this more passionately. I have been far too lax about gathering stories, and now Davy, Elliot, and Theo have paid a dear price. When are you planning to return to Diamond Lake? You have come from there, right? We mustn't delay."

Ascaria creates as much water (Create Water) as they can hold, but advises the guards it'll only last a day so drink up, wash up, and use it up. He also creates 12 pints of a mellow wine for them to enjoy this evening with a couple castings of Enhance Water (this lasts until spoiled).

Finally he casts Purify Food and Drink on any scummy water or old food to bring it back to usability. He also casts Mending on the most broken small thing (6#) in the keep that they need (only gets one a day).

In short, he does all he can to extend their meager supplies until Allustan arrives with reinforcements.

Something about his sleep leaves Mort unsettled when he wakes in the morning. Mortimer rifles through his backpack to make sure the apples aren't worm infested, and that the Jar Worm is still safely intact. Relieved to find it so, he silently mouths threats at its contents and carefully packs it back.

"Hey, these are nice bracers!" he exclaims, pulling them out of his pack and holding them aloft. "Does anyone want to use them? I think I'll stick with what I've got on now. How about this Amulet of Natural Armor?" he queries, similarly holding it out for inspection. "Anyone? What about the Trident? I don't mind carrying it around, but I don't much care for actually using it."

Once that is sorted, he joins the others in the kitchen.

"Allustan returned to Diamond Lake a few days ago to summon an army. Seeing as that might be the case, you may want to make ready for the Company, they can't be too far off now. The trident is a +1 returning weapon. Etched in the head of the weapon are various wrapping dragons, ascending towards the points, as well as the draconic word for 'king'.

Ascaria wrote:
"Well, Allustan is on his way here from Diamond Lake and might arrive soon - maybe even today."

Marzena starts, then composes herself. "He's coming here? Well, then, I suppose we should wait here for his arrival, prepare something..." She begins to fret, understanding her circumstances. Her demeanor relaxes immensely as Ascaria begins to bring their stores up to speed. When the gnome offers to Mend something, Marzena asks him to wait. She spends the better part of a half hour, pulling broken pieces of wood from the barricade, which slowly comes together to form a badly-broken rocking chair. "Please." Sampson looks a little uncomfortable, but doesn't offer another item up for repair in challenge to Marzena's request. The men look glad for the libations.

Mortimer:

The worm is still in its jar. Somehow, the turbidity of the jar's contents, other than the worm, of course, has decreased, allowing you easily see the worm's features. It remains in stasis, though you could swear you see it twitch at the sound of your muffled threats.

Marzena looks questioningly at Solrisa. "Black dragon? What black dragon?"

Hourpen takes advantage of the beautifully-clear day to send Chasah out again. This time, the hawk remains in sight, circling the sky at roughly four hour's journey by horse from Blackwall Keep. If this marks Garrison reinforcements, they should arrive by early afternoon, today.

Surprised that the story of the dragon and worms wasn't a part of the story of the lizardfolk, Solrisa explains it all as best she can. She describes how they tracked the lizardfolk to the right lair, how they talked with the nice lizardfolk, then had to beat the mean lizardjerks. She describes it all in Sol's terms, describing the beauty of the swamp, the butterfly that followed them, even the encounters with the crocodiles and the like on the way there.

The only thing she didn't like was the mosquitos.

She goes on to describe talking with the lizardman nice guy and of the black dragon bomb egg that was really filled with green slimies, a trap to infect the entire tribe! She will describe how the nice lizardman spoke of the black dragon and what the dragon did to the lizardjerk champions, changing them.

She tells it all.

"Look, Sol! There be dragons here!" says Mortimer cheerily pointing to the head of the Trident while re-checking his gear.

Eri wrote:
"That amulet looks nice. I'd like it if it's all the same to you all. How sure are we that the army won't kill the lizard folks on sight? Do we need to send out an envoy?"

Mortimer hands the amulet to Eri without looking up. "Not that I'm not up for that, but I don't think they will bother the LizardFolk if the LizardFolk don't bother them. Besides, I'd think the LizardFolk would be smart enough to stay out of sight of an army." He sets the bracers next to the Trident, hoping someone will claim them.

Out of his backpack he pulls a tobacco pipe over which he puzzles. What the Hells is this doing in here? He looks for tobacco, but finds none. He sniffs at the pipe once, wrinkles his nose in disgust, then shrugs and puts it back. ' gonna have to clean this pack out soon. He lazily listens to the ladies talk while he "works" nocking an arrow into the light crossbow and making sure the weapon is intact.

While peering into his backpack, Mortimer suddenly scowls, his tiny mind having reached critical mass.

"Do you suppose this belongs to the dragon in question?" he asks, holding up Thedrick's real dragon tooth pendent. He relates the group's encounters with Thedrick, the pregnant Kendra and Dourstone mine to whomever present will listen, and again if necessary if Allustan arrives. "I don't know how or if it's related to worms at all, but there seemed to be a very concerted effort on the part of Evil to band together in that mine and proliferate their numbers. Then the dwarves and those weapons on top of everything else..." I wonder where they ended up?

He looks up at Chasah, soaring high above, wishing he could see what the bird can see.

Marzena listens to the story, becoming tight-lipped as she seeks some kind of forgiveness in her heart for her captors. When the subject of the black dragon and its sabotage of the lizardfolk comes to light, Marzena's face flushes with anger.

"A dragon is responsible for this, this disease in our land?! You named it, what did you say? Ilthane? This is not good. Dragons have not been seen in these parts for many, many years, let alone a black. I am unaware of Ilthane's heritage or local impact."

A sudden rustling of wings, and a wood thrush finds its way down the stairs, and alights upon Marzena's shoulder. "I thought you were lost to us! I worried, and worried, then I worried some more, and you've returned!" The little bird nuzzles Marzena's neck, then opens an eye, looking at you all, as if seeing you for the first time. "Oh, hello. I'm sorry, but we've been separated for far too long. Don't let me interrupt." The little bird returns to nuzzling.

Marzena closes her eyes, and leans her head into the nuzzling. "Oh, Ahiloor! Out there all alone, you patient little thing." She looks to you all, and introduces her familiar. "I barely had time to tell her to flee, when the lizardfolk breached the Keep." She continues to talk with you all, feathered friend at her neck.

"Solrisa, how would you propose hunting this dragon? If it is the source of the worm scourge, then its death should be a priority, I agree. I am not sure that we are equipped to hunt the creature, but you all seem quite resourceful. What would you need to see it slain?"

...

The early afternoon arrives, unless someone other than Marzena presses for early departure. She does not, once she understands that an arrival is likely today.

A light troop of horses breaks from the treeline from the north. They advance, taking in the surrounds, then stop. Jurdan calls out, and raises a makeshift white flag, signaling them to come ahead. The troop returns to the treeline, then begin to advance towards Blackwall Keep, this time followed by three wagons. The caravan arrives, and Blackwall Keep is abuzz.

Hourpen recognizes lieutenant Mikela Venderin, as well as several of his garrison brothers. In total, twelve new recruits begin to unload two of the wagons, with supplies of food and wood and weapons. The third wagon is unloaded more carefully, as Allustan himself debarks, and makes his way hurriedly into the Keep. Mikela spends time with Sampson, debriefing the man in the main room of the first floor. Sampson is honest, and apologetic. Mikela doesn't spend words on reassurance, but there is no tone of judgment in her voice, only encouragement to explain as much as possible.

Allustan greets you all, looking at each of you, as if trying to remember if you are all that had been with him since the last time. When Marzena steps forward to greet him, Allustan takes her hand in his, and pats it slowly and firmly. "My, but you are a sight for sore eyes." When she explains succinctly that you all are responsible for her continued good health, Allustan renews his look on each of you, this time something more earnest behind his eyes.

"This day improves with the telling. Let's stay out of the soldiers' way, shall we?" Marzena and Allustan lead you all downstairs to the kitchen. Ahiloor wings Allustan when she sees him, causing Marzena to apologize to the man. Allustan reassures her that it was wholly earned, for having abandoned the Keep in his return to Diamond Lake.

Allustan was able to teleport back, but made a costly mistake by taking his case directly to the Garrison. Captain Tolliver Trask was an insurmountable wall, until Allustan involved his brother. More time to secure supplies, and transportation, then it was clear roads ahead. In fact, one of the wagons present today is the same wagon you had ridden to Blackwall Keep, though Maurice is absent.

The sound of muffled repair work reaches you all downstairs, but the conversation doesn't rise in volume much to account for it. Allustan finishes his story, then petitions you for yours. Presuming you share all that you've encountered, the old man frowns, patting Ascaria's drawings, then patting Marzena's nearby hand.

"So. We have worms, and we have a dragon. We have increasing numbers of sightings, and we have firsthand witnessing of the transformation. We even have a jarred worm, intact. This, combined with your diplomatic efforts with the lizardfolk, and it sounds like our new focus is Egorian itself. I have a friend there, Eligos Manzorian. He tends towards the more... morbid aspects of magic, and may know more of this than I. I sure hope so, because I'm largely in the dark about this, despite the small puzzle pieces we've been able to assemble here." He waves his hands in a circle above the table, then looks to you all.

"Are you willing to continue this investigation? Your experience is your own, but I think vital to uncovering what may be a grave turn of events. I'll need to write an introductory letter to Eligos. The man's more paranoid than I. What say you?" Marzena's hand rests upon Allustan's.

At Allustan's arrival.

You've seen his tremor before, in his personal study, but he tended to wringing his hands to mask the appearance. Without actually putting your hands on the man, you can tell that his neck muscles strain a bit, as if swallowing spit has become something of a chore.

Almost in reaction to Tynan's pointed gaze, Allustan returns his look. "What? Do you have a question? You look concerned. Are you unsure of this new endeavor? It's really nothing. We have worms to worry about. I need no protecting once I've returned to Diamond Lake. Perhaps if you make a case to Mikela, eh? She is far more reasonable than Trask. Huh." Mikela is busy clearing little stones from her boots when you approach her. She smiles warmly, beckoning you to sit down next to her. "Your escorting was successful enough, once you arrived at Blackwall. I can't see how anyone could fault you for being unable to follow the man and his use of magic to return to Diamond Lake. From what I've gathered here, you've been busy. The men speak of your group's actions with a heroic tone. I'm sending you all back, with Rauffe, and a message for our Captain. Is there anything I shouldn't leave out?"

Allustan helps Marzena pack her essentials, though most of her room's accoutrements are left in place. She intends on staying with Allustan for roughly a week, before returning to her post at the Keep.

The work done on Blackwall by the end of the first day is promising. The resupply has been a boon for the soldiers, and they seem to walk about with purpose and renewed confidence. The evening even sees a little celebration, as one of the fresh soldiers breaks out a fiddle, and Blackwall echoes with better than mediocre jig and sing-a-long.

The group leaves Blackwall in the early morning, making their way slowly, but more confidently, towards Diamond Lake. You arrive at the abandoned farmhouse for the first evening's stay, taking the cold from the night air with a robust fire. As you are among familiar folk, there is little storytelling about the time with the lizardfolk, as Allustan himself seems little interested in hearing about it. He spends a good amount of time looking over Ascaria's drawings, in fact.

The first and second day bear no ill encounters, and you find the hills breaking away, into view of Diamond Lake, once more. The wagons see you safely back to Able Carter's Coaching Inn, only after dropping off Allustan and Marzena at his estate.

It is late-ish evening. Welcome home.

"Ascaria, remember?! Do you know who was really good at teleporting?" Sol asks with a big smile on her face. "Mum! She loved to pop here and there. And I think that is a good plan, I suppose. Did you want me to come to or start hunting the dragon on my own?"
