GM Kiora's Wrath of the Righteous

Game Master Kiora Atua

Chosen heroes have arrived in Kenabres at the dawn of the Fifth Crusade. Will they be the ones to end a century long war?

"The tower seems to have collapsed entirely. There is nothing there guarding it," Ehren replies. The abundance of brimorak guards was problematic, but their reliance on fire to inflict damage could work in their favor. Along with that, the gap in the citadel's defenses gave them considerable leeway in finding a point of entry.

"If memory serves correctly, most of the demons Xanderghul mentioned being in the citadel can teleport," he adds, in agreement with Isilme. "I believe that sealing off doors would only be to our detriment."

Ehren walks back over to the arrow slit, insect still in hand. "This one should be around for almost another hour. I will have it check on the enemies at Southbank, see what we might be up against."

Unless there are anymore proposals to plan for the Beast itself, I am ready to move on.

Xanderghul, have you finalized your spell list?

The heroes choose a site away from Paradise Hill to lure the Beast. Commander Bishop has both the Banshee Squadron and Ser Ilivan's rangers hide in the surrounding buildings in case they require back-up. This leaves Paradise Hill completely empty of archers and forward scouts, so the Eagle Watch takes up duty on the tower in their stead, and Wenduag has her Underfolk monitor the Hill for any threats.

Alright, I think Isilme wanted to do the lure???

As they finish the meeting, Isilme addresses the others on final preparations. "Ehren, I will need you to levitate me so that I can summon the Beast from the roof of the tower. Once I have levitate, you will all need to get into position, and Markus will need to take the Shantak along with you. Once he has ordered it to fight, he can take cover. Once he is on the way, I will head down to join you all quickly, and we can engage him."

"Sosiel, I will need one of the clerics to join me on the roof to provide me with clarion call as we discussed. Once he has cast upon me he can head back within the tower."

Afterwards she leads the others down to the base of the tower so that they can move to the location from there. Isilme begins by focusing deep within herself. She had been building up a reserve of her power over the past few days, knowing that it would be necessary within Drezen, and now seemed like the time to draw upon it. Moving first to Ary, she scribes the rune of bravery on her chest, the divine magic flowing into her, empowering the heroism she cast simultaneously. She takes a step and repeats the process on Hinagiku, and finally a third time on Valaria. The three spells she burned represented the last of her spells of that tier, having used one on herself and gallant inspiration in an attempt to convince Joran to grant them the information.

Casting mythic heroism on Valaria, Hinagiku and Ary for 3 MP

As soon as she completes the casting she waits for Ehren to enchant her with the scale, and then begins to levitate herself up towards the roof. When she's level with the roof she steps gingerly onto the crenelations. She greets the cleric sent by Sosiel to meet her, receiving the clarion call and waiting for the cleric to leave before turning to begin.

Drawing her breath in, Isilme centers herself. They had committed themselves to this path before them. Isilme would be unable to contribute directly to the fight significantly after this, but Ary and the others had been right. Each of the group had a role to play in the coming battle. So too did she have her part, from communicating with Joran to ensuring her friends had the strength to fight and baiting Soltengrobbe to them.

Centering herself and adjusting her posture and diaphragm, her voice takes on a strongly masculine, proud tone. Crying out at the top of her lungs, the magic causing her voice to reverberate across the city, she calls out to the chimera. "Hear me, Soltengrobbe, weakest of the Chimeras. Terror only of the shadows in which you cower, few remember your name now. Once bested by the mortal Vard, greatest of the sarkorian warriors, you turned and fled. Even then the honor ran thin in your veins, but now you sit chained, the pet of demons! Come servant of the weakest of the outsiders, subservient dog of the impotent servants who hide here awaiting their master's return. Come forth and face Vard again and meet your end! Come forth and prove that you are not the lowliest of the legendary chimeras! Or perhaps you will turn and flee from Vard a second time? Or perhaps you cannot even move without the permission of your master. Will you allow yourself to be held back like some broken mongrel Soltengrobbe? Come and meet me atop my mount in battle! Come and defeat the great Vard and reclaim your honor, or DIE TRYING!"

Echoes of her taunt return to her ears from the walls of the citadel before her as she waits for some sign of the coming of the Beast.

Perception: 1d20 + 24 ⇒ (5) + 24 = 29

She prepares to call upon Desna's blessing to move quickly once the Beast is approaching. Hopefully Xanderghul would provide the appropriate illusion of a champion atop the Shantak to grab the Beast's attention once it was closer.

As soon as Isilme hears signs that the beast is coming, she will expeditious retreat and jump down with levitate to join the others. She will call out to the beast along the way, attempting to ensure it reaches the group.

Xanderghul, I need you to illusion the shantak into appearing covered with flesh and mounted by a badass sarkorian with a giant spear.

Good idea, Isilme.

Xanderghul joins the others in preparation for the arrival of Soltengrobbe, glad in his finest (read: only) robes, freshly cleaned and pressed by magic, and protected by a shimmering barrier of protective abjuration magic. As they set up their ambush, Xanderghul weaves an illusion, casting flesh and skin over the shantak, a saddle atop it and even further atop that, a musclebound Sarkorian warrior. He had spent some time asking Ehren what he knew of the legendary Vard Rockgrinder (obviously not too legendary, for everyone had forgotten him without the use of magic) in order to make the illusion as realistic as possible.

Protect myself with resist energy (cold) and create an illusion of a live Vard Rockgrinder on top of the shantak, as Isilme suggests, with major image.

Objection! Ary does not suggest moving the rangers, only the banshees. The rangers are mostly as effective from any range. She wants the tower protected. Will rangers be in volley range?

WRONG ALIAS

Remember that the rangers and banshees aren't there to attack Soltengrobbe, they're there to ambush drake riders. Neither of them are likely to be able to damage the chimera.

Alright, updated Roll 20. I need all 6 of you to check in, move your token to a desired location, and declare any pre-fight assumptions you'd like to make. If you take shelter in a building, you get cover, halve conal damage that comes at you, and may make a stealth check if desired.

You've mentioned you want to clerics to prepare special spells today (other than clarion call)? What are those? I need to know now, or else I will assume all spells are prepared same as yesterday.

The shantak is controllable by all of you so someone should move him wherever it is you want him.

I'm assuming the banshees are off-map. If you want them on the map, say so now. Rangers are with your troops at the hill.

Alright, so once all 6 of you check in, we'll get this started.

Sosiel hits the group with communal resist energy, cold, and then he is free to leave for the tower or to hide in the ruins far enough to be safe.

I'd like to nominate that Sosiel prepare two castings of protection from energy instead and tag Ary and Valaria with them. It'll protect them from a whole pile of damage instead of damage per hit, and we need them to be at high health the most.

Xanderghul hides as well, near Isilme. He has a scroll of ray of exhaustion ready (one of his last ones) and he takes a deep breath to steady himself. For his entire existence, survival had relied on avoiding fights like this, but here they were, purposefully drawing out a foe they knew to be crushingly powerful. He sighs.

The only reason I don't think that's worth it is because half the damage of the breath is piercing. There just isn't that much cold damage to soak, and it's better to protect us all against some of it.

Other thoughts on protection vs resistance for cold protection?

Buffs | Char. Sheet |

I like the plan of attack we (Isilme made) have on the citadel. However, I am not clear on the last bit of the plan. Are we still going for infiltration? But that does not matter so much now…

Hinagiku comes out of the war meeting rubbing her temples and mentally exhausted. Knowing that the others will take some time to prepare to goad the beast or retrieve their personal effects, she opts to go down the stairs and find a quite spot close to the base of the tower to meditate. For a few minutes, she is able to recenter herself and empty her mind from everything, allowing her to recover.

As Isilme exits the tower, she finds the serene and ready Hinagikku who accepts her magic blessing. The monk walks in silence to the location of their ambush and, after looking at each of her companion, slightly longer at Ehren, and giving them a nod she moves behind a building where she drinks a potion of longstrider. She then rummages in her bag to retrieve a flask of alchemist fire and her wand.

”Ready.” Hinagiku simply whispers to the others.

I would opt for protection from energy.

At Isilme's word, Xanderghul concentrates on his illusion. In between eye-blinks, a dozen rowdy Kellid warriors clad in shirtless hide vests and carrying battleaxes appear around "Vard Rockgrinder" as if they had always been there.

I will cast a vote for communal protection from energy, hitting all of us.

Truthfully, Ehren would have much rather faced Soltengrebbe in a natural environment, just as Vard did all those years ago. But given the unignorable presence of the Worldwound, that would be impossible, even if they did somehow draw the chimera outside of the city. And so instead he walks down the ruined streets of the city, the reality of their situation sinking in. They were about to fight a legend. He smiles at Hinagiku reassuringly when she looks at him, but he cannot hide his apprehension.

His grip on the charwood staff tightens as Isilme issues her challenge in a language he could not understand. The entire setup was far more elaborate than he had originally thought it would be. A far simpler taunt might have drawn the Beast's attention, but he understood the misdirection involved in the bard's plan. Besides, she always did have a flair for the dramatic.

With a sigh he steps behind the wall of a ruined building, not too far from the "legendary Sarkorian warrior." He concentrates on the beetle he had sent to Soltengrebbe's tower; if it managed to crawl onto the chimera without being noticed, then they would know right away if the Beast was on the move.

Stealth (Armor Check Penalty, Hiding): 1d20 + 2 - 3 ⇒ (14) + 2 - 3 = 13

MYTHIC TRIAL 1: SOLTENGREBBE, BEAST OF THE NORTH

Soltengrebbe isn't a subtle monster. The heroes hear him well before they see him - he roars out his challenge, audible to likely the entire city. Nearly thirty feet long and fifteen feet tall, the creature is visible from a great distance. A monster with the head of a snow leopard, a white dragon, and a goat, with enormous leathery wings - the Beast of the North is a legend in every sense. Its very presence is utterly terrifying. Hundreds upon hundreds of years old, Soltengrebbe has killed many a hero.

Except Vard Rockgrinder. He bested him. But Soltengrebbe wouldn't suffer that again.

The chimera swoops down from high in the sky, until he is a good thirty feet in the air. The feline head gives a cheshire grin. It utters one word - "VARD." Then the dragon head to its right takes in a great breath and exhales... raining great icicles from the sky.

Soltengrebbe: Knowledge Checks

These are separate checks.

SOLTENGREBBE is a MYTHIC chimera. Through his long life, his multiple heads have superior teamwork when compared to normal chimera.

To defeat Soltengrebbe, the heroes must defeat each of his heads. Each of his heads goes on its own initiative count. They each have their own separate HP pools. For the purposes of wound thresholds, all three heads combine into one pool. For the purposes of spell targeting, Soltengrebbe is still one target. However because it goes three times per turn, it has the ability to "shake off" abilities more often than normal (examples: hold person, hideous laughter).

Defeating each head deprives Soltengrebbe of certain abilities...

DC 24 K. Arcana or K.Nature - SNOW LEOPARD:
The snow leopard can bite, claw, and claw. As the central head, it shares the ice chamber with the white dragon, giving its bite attacks cold damage. The snow leopard has the ability to swallow foes whole.

DC 24 K. Arcana - WHITE DRAGON:
The white dragon has a breath attack and a bite attack. It partially controls the wings. Killing the white dragon will halve its fly speed. Killing the other controlling head will render it unable to fly.

DC 24 K. Arcana or K.Nature - GOAT:
The goat has a gore attack. The cleverest of the heads, the goat gives the chimera the ability to roll twice whenever it is forced to make a saving throw, taking the higher of the two rolls. The goat partially controls the wings. Killing the goat head will halve its fly speed. Killing the other controlling head will render it unable to fly.

DC 24. K. Planes (DEMONS):
Soltengrebbe has been exposed to the VILE ENERGIES of the Worldwound for so long, that he now counts as a demon for all purposes of abilities that affect demons. He also has the standard demonic resistances and immunities. He has spell resistance.

Ehren and Isilme are up!

The moment Ehren first lays eyes on the immense chimera, he realizes that the legends and songs did not do it justice. One had to see the Beast of the North for themself to truly understand what they were up against. Right now, there was not a doubt in Ehren's mind that if Vard Rockgrinder were here today, he would not survive a rematch with this monster. All the more reason to destroy it.

With Xanderghul's warnings in mind, Ehren wastes no time. Drawing on the power of the ley and invoking the power of the archdruid's crown, his burn with white light as he thrusts his staff upwards. A great pillar of white flame erupts from the ground, shooting up into the sky and engulfing the mythic chimera.

Despite all their planning, the beast is significantly more... impressive than Isilme had imagined. She doesn't even have time to scribe the divine rune for courage in the air before her before the beast's approach nearly sends her scrambling for cover further away. It's only Ary's voice calling to her that keeps her from losing it entirely.

"Right..." she says, composing herself. The creature was still far away, preventing her from weakening its will against her magic. Isilme calls out, her voice booming through the ruins, echos running rampant among them. "The Beast of Drezen thought itself clever // the Beast of Drezen thought itself keen // the Beast of Drezen walked into a trap and soon found his bones stripped clean. Called to his doom to settle a score, a wound old as the hills. // And as the beast approached to fight, the heroes steeled their wills.

With the power of the archdruid's crown and the ley combined, Ehren is barely able to muster up enough magical power to harm it. Flame engulfs it... but it barely leaves a scratch. Isilme nocks her arrow and fires it... it flies true, and the chimera proves to be an enormous target.... but its hide is so thick that the arrow does not penetrate deeply enough to harm it.

The chimera lands in the courtyard, its great feline head lashing out at the shantak and ripping it apart with its great maw. It then turns, seeing Xanderghul is closest. The dragon bashes its way through the wall, tossing Ary aside and snapping into Xanderghul's body. It digs its teeth deep into his flesh. The goat head follows suit, bashing into him from the other side, and nearly bringing him to his knees.

Reeling from the pain (and surprise!) of being hit first, Xanderghul reaches out towards Ary and tags her with a spell. Her position shifts and blurs, obscuring the true place where she is standing. That should allow her to stand against the beast for a few moments longer. Then she shifts away from it, navigating the half-destroyed walls and floor of the building that he'd taken cover inside of.

Ehren's eyes widen. He knew the Beast was unnaturally resilient, but he had not expected his strongest spell to do, well... almost nothing. When the monster lands, the druid swears that he could feel the ground tremor. He takes one, shaky breath and lets the fear pass over him. He had to remember that unlike Vard Rockgrinder, he was not alone in this fight.

While his friends keep Soltengrebbe busy, Ehren murmurs a spell, forming swirling motes of starlight around his hands. Hopefully, he would be able to call on some backup.

"קעצל," she replies to Ary without thinking, her massive voice filling the remnants of the structure despite not making an effort to do so.

With the Val and Ary ahead of her and Xanderghul at her side, the group was too tightly packed. Isilme swings around outside the building they'd been hiding in, attempting to ensure that they didn't become an easy target for Soltengrobbe's breath. "Stay apart, if you end up together he may breathe on you all," she calls to the group through her magic.

"The Beast of Drezen thought itself clever // the Beast of Drezen thought itself keen // the Beast of Drezen walked into a trap and soon found his bones stripped clean. // His frigid breath scoured the streets, 'd've cut the heroes to the quick. // But Soltengrobbe's heads were empty as his hide was thick," she continues. Rhyming the story of the fight so far served two purposes: It bolstered the spirits of those fighting Soltengrobbe then and there by giving them something to focus on, just as Ary had grounded Isilme when she had panicked upon the chimera's arrival; and it allowed both friend and foe in the surrounding city to know that Soltengrobbe's death was coming, and to highlight its stupidity to them all.

Finally satisfied with her positioning, Isilme takes stock of the situation. Unfortunately, with Hinagiku having secluded herself far from the others, and no one having been able to get her attention before the beast landed, casting haste was problematic. Once she approached it would be trivial to speed up the group's attacks, however.

Readying an action to haste when Hinagiku is in range. If she is in the yellow triangle, I will haste Val, Ary, Myself and Hinagiku. If she ends up on any of the Shantak's squares that are also in the triangle, Xanderghul also becomes a valid target.

Her back to the wall of an old decrepit building, Hinagiku waits in silence for Soltengrebbe’s arrival. When she hears his roar, she breaths in and then waits, waits as she feels a cool breeze pass by and then spring into action when she hears the nearby building crumble under the beasts attack.

Rounding the corner she stops dead in her tracks, she had prepared herself for a terrible creature, but that was much much worst, it's sheer size and presence enough to create a storm within Hinagiku's inner ocean, disturbing it and shattering the monk's resolve.

Her inward gaze shifts, instead of staring into a stormy pool of emotions, she sees the calm serene ocean her mind always is. The two states of mind seen to mesh and blend into one another until she realizes that they are one and the same interpreted in different ways. While the old human Hinagiku is staring upon unbridled emotions, the young kitsune Hinagiku sees the harmony of chaos, a kind of inward perfection she had never glimpsed before. This is enough to calm her down. Staring at the beast, the monk springs forward, and with the very power of the ley, she does a quick faint, walking on the destroyed fence and body of the shantak before using the wall of the building as cover and ducking beneath the dragon head and hitting it with all her might.

Is it too late to switch my attack to the goat?

WotR Global Buffs/Debuffs: ----

@Xanderghul - Cold damage affects protection from cold then resist comes into play once there is no protection left. They do not stack simultaneously. This is explicitly stated in the rules for protection from energy.

Props to Hinagiku for being clever and using the building to prevent an AoO while she closes :)

Hinagiku uses the half-ruined wall as cover, narrowly avoiding the snapping jaws of the dragon as she passes. She ducks under its head and wheels around into its reach. With Irori's divine power behind her strike, landing a solid blow into the goat's jaw. The goat bleats in pain, unable to defend itself when Valaria gracefully leaps through a broken window of the building, lunging forwards to drive both blades deep into the monster. When she withdraws, a strange thing happens - the two wounds seal partially back up. The goat head rolls around in agony, useless to attack much of anything just yet.

'Tu magnus medela,' intones Markus from afar, emerging from the building he was hidden in. Raising one palm towards Xanderghul, the wizard feels his wounds star to heal over.

Roaring with fury, the chimera wheels on Commander Bishop... but it sinks its teeth into thin air, a few feet away from where she is actually standing. It whirls around with an enormous paw, flaying a neat slice of flesh off from her before she can manuever Faith into position. The dragon head snakes away from Hinagiku and lunges at Valaria, but she heroically jams her starknife into its open mouth, forcing it open and away from her. Its blades dig deep into its mouth and tongue, and the dragon jerks its head away to prevent further injury.

The chimera shirks away from the heroes a few steps and bares its teeth. It hadn't expected them to hurt it. It calls upon its unholy power - a mythic power - and its flesh for a moment shimmers solid black. Its hide is even tougher now. It can heal even faster.
