Ehren is all out of wild shape uses for today, so any scouting he does will have to be the next day.
GM Kiora |
In discussion, Ary brings up the idea of scouting tomorrow morning, ahead of the army, instead. Isilme agrees, only wanting to send scouts out to look for possible Vilareth refugees tonight. If going tomorrow, Ary suggests sending the core group to Mantarin, with Hinagiku and 2 other NPCs going to Vilareth. Thoughts?
Still need ideas as to WHO is getting left behind with the supplies. A clear majority of you is in favor of leaving supplies and guards behind, the only question is who. Only Hinagiku has stated the Sarenrites. Thoughts?
Xanderghul |
If we must leave forces behind, I think it should be Captain Dann and her men (because they're locals, not part of the army, and bonus points because they're Sarenrites), and I think we should also leave our supply wagons, the war prisoners, Ayavah, and Nurah (because they're noncombatantants and we're walking into a potentially very deadly situation with the opportunity to shelter noncombatantants). The understanding being, of course, that we would all re-unite one day later.
I think that we should do no scouting tonight. I don't think anybody really has the resources or the health reserves for it, and can spare not sleeping. If we were to send scouts (which we probably should), Hinagiku along with somebody like Ser Illivan is a good bet, giving them a couple hours' lead while we march the army to Mantarin.
Hinagiku. |
I am still pro sending Hinagiku at night to Vilareth. We won't be wasting anytime since she does not need to sleep.
Xanderghul |
My worry with sending Hinagiku totally alone is the danger. What if she gets ambushed? Plus, Hinagiku does not have Survival trained and is fairly likely to get lost. Hinagiku also does not have darkvision, which is something that the tiefling cultists and the demons have as advantages over her. Plus, we have an infinitely-teleporting babau assassin after us. Going out alone at night is practically asking to get ganked.
Hinagiku. |
Good point xanderghul, even though Hinagiku has access to dancing lights, she would probably have lots of difficulty with the babau. Survival wise, the bonus given by Nurah (+4) given before departure, and her +4 wisdom should cover it.
Ehren Ferron |
Regardless of who scouts in the morning, the army needs to be on the move in the meantime. I still think it's too dangerous for anyone to scout at night, especially on their own, but if we insist then Hinagiku is probably our best bet.
I agree that the former defenders of Fort Ahari are the best option to leave behind.

Alrighty. Looks like you guys are sending out scouts tomorrow in the morning, ahead of the main army. Hinagiku and Ser Ilivan, along with one other ranger will head to Vilareth, then regroup with the main army. Isilme, Anevia, Ehren, Xanderghul and Valaria will scout ahead to Mantarin. Ary will travel with her main army.
You will be leaving your supplies, siege weaponry, and prisoners behind along with Captain Dann's men and the Underfolk to guard them.
Ary has specifically asked that Ayavah be watched by Valaria at all times. If she wishes to let her stay at Silvershore, she will need to OK this personally.
I need Ary to respond to this post by Hinagiku in order to formally accept that you're taking on the additional seven prisoners, making your prisoner of war total 17.
Nurah waves a hand impatiently. "I've been a crusader longer than you have, Xanderghul! Maybe I'm not much for stabbing things but I'll have you know a few hours ago I helped close a demonic rift to the Undersump. All by myself!" She sighs. "But if you insist, I'll stay behind in Silvershore," she adds, reluctantly.
Up to you guys if you have anything further to do today. If you have nothing further to do or roleplay, then just let me know, or say your PC is going to sleep. I imagine there are some journals to look forward to... :D?

Xanderghul rolls his eyes. "A Crusader's about all you've been longer than me, Nurah. Besides, don't you want time to just sit and write?" He waves a hand around. "You're not here to fight, you're here to record, am I right? It's just a day."
I've updated my spell list. Let me know if there's any changes that you guys suggest I could make. I'm trying to be more battle-y today ;)
Ary Bishop |
I like the idea of leaving Dann with the prisoners for personal reasons ;) I don't like the idea of leaving Ayavah behind; she's proven herself capable in fights. :) That, and giving her the opportunity to proselytize and/or get herself burned at the stake since she's not good at keeping her mouth shut, while being a natural arcane caster/demon cultist in the Kellid town seems unwise. Ary can also use Keep Watch on 1-2 people to go with Hinagiku, which means that Valaria, who volunteered, could still go no matter whta time.
Ary Bishop |
"Of course." Ary responds to Hinagiku. "We'll need to be careful about taking on too many prisoners, but I'm not about to just start executing the people who surrender."
* * *
"A day can mean a lot. Like... a lava monster or a portal into the Abyss." Ary responds to Xanderghul. "And... I wouldn't expect it to be a single day. Assume two-to-three. It's not really about leaving you out, though. Our supplies need a capable guard. I doubt that you'll have much trouble, but I'd feel better knowing someone particularly capable were here."
GM Kiora |
"The best part of being a historian is realizing you're living history in the making..." Nurah chuckles at Ary. "Okay, okay, well, when you put it that way... I do expect some extremely detailed accounts of how you managed to retake the mine when you get back, though!"
Ehren Ferron |
"Today was long. Tomorrow is only promising to be longer," Ehren says tiredly, already stifling a yawn.
Ready for bed whenever. ;P
Valaria Alazario |

Should be good to go. Anything forgotten falls in line with Ary being as tired as I am.

Once the plan is established, Hinagiku silently takes her leave, bowing slightly to her assembled companions. She then makes her way to the supply wagons, taking a few blankets, and a bit of bread and dried meat for the prisoners. However, before she can make her way back to the clan hall, she passes by the medic’s tent, realizing for the first time how violent the other battle was, she stops by. Though unable to draw more positive energy to heal for the day, she does make a point to stop by to see Markus, and tell him that it won’t be possible to count on her for healing the wounded. However, she does also mention the badly burnt Kellids of Silvershore, specifying that they need medical attention, which Markus and the crusaders would be more apt at giving than the healers of the tribe.
I am going to assume that Markus tells Hinagiku about Annabelle’s fall. If not disregard following lines.
Breathing deeply so has to let no sadness or anger break the peaceful pool of her mind, the monk leaves Markus’ side to visit Annabelle’s remains. Alone with the Shelynite, she spends a few minutes praying to her own God, while braiding the young woman’s golden hair.
Then, finally, Hinagiku makes her way back to the clan hall, distributing a few rations and blankets to help keep the prisoners warm until they are taken, and brought with the other prisoners from the Ahari bridge battle. She then spends the whole night with them, first meditating, braiding her hair, and reading about the plans of Mendev. Then, taking a short nap, followed by a full night watching them sleep, or speaking with those who remain awake. She only departs once.
During her short trip away from the prisoners, Hinagiku stops by to see Valaria, and asking whether it is okay for her not to watch over Ayavah’s tent during the night to make sure that the cultist does not escapes. She also stops by Ary’s tent, expecting the commander to still be hard at work in preparing their coming departure. She does not speak, but simply brings a bit of food, and a faint smile.
Will take 10 minutes to prepare endure elements before casting it for the next 24h hours. This is this day’s spell. Afterward, will leave the following day’s slot open as usual. Ready for sleep!
GM Kiora |
Markus is busy, as usual, over-seeing the two dozen clerics that he is in charge of at the medical tents. He does take the time to thank Hinagiku for her offer, adding, "You really don't need to spend your resources helping us if you think the Commander will need them more in the fights to come."
Hinagiku learns of Annabelle's fall when she starts asking around for her, concerned that the cavalier hadn't sought her out herself once the sun had set. Markus apologetically gives her the bad news, but adds, "I can bring her back, though... it will take me a lot of time and effort to repeat the feat, but, I can feel her presence still out there."
--------------------
Isilme comes to the wagons to inform Ledsa that Külə will be joining them for the night. Ledsa steps out for a moment to greet him, simultaneously concerned and horrified at his ghastly appearance.
"Mae gwarcheidwad coedwig ...." she whispers in astonishment to Isilme. "Fy mam yn dweud wrtha i ei math crwydro mewn buchesi mawr trwy gydol y coedwigoedd hynafol Sarkoris, eu diogelu rhag y rhai a fyddai'n gwneud y rhai sanctaidd niwed goedwig. "A forest guardian.... my mother told me his kind roamed in great herds throughout the ancient forests of Sarkoris, protecting them from those who would do those sacred woods harm. I thought they all died out when the demons came."
"Yn wir." Külə responds bitterly, his keen ears easily picking up on her hushed tone, though his face is turned away. "Y rhai teilwng i bawb farw amddiffyn eu coedwigoedd. Mae marwolaeth anrhydeddus."
"Indeed. The worthy ones all died protecting their glades. An honorable death."
Ledsa seems embarrassed. "Fy ymddiheuriadau! Yr wyf yn golygu dim diffyg parch."
"My apologies! I meant no disrespect."
Külə doesn't respond, falling to the ground heavily next to the wagon.

"Külə, y lleill a fu farw yn gallu amddiffyn unrhyw beth mwyach. Mae eu marwolaethau, tra dim amheuaeth nerthol, cyflawni fawr ddim. "Külə, the others that died can no longer protect anything. Their deaths, while no doubt valiant, accomplished little. By living you can do more than any of them did in death. You have the chance to protect others still. Ledsa here, especially, needs your protection. By allowing her to sleep near you, you will be protecting both her and her unborn daughter, Yulin, who will need looking over and guidance."

With people beginning to either turn in or go their own way for the night, Val finds a private place to write.
On more a more relevant note, I was absolutely right. It was a long day. We rode out at top speed toward Silvershore ahead of the army, leaving Ary behind to lead the men while we rushed ahead to try to cut off the forces aiming to attack the town. We found the enemy’s main camp on the way, but we left that to the majority of our forces and kept moving. Thankfully, Ary and the rest of our friends managed to rout them without too much trouble. Annabelle… fell in combat, but Markus is certain that he can restore her. A few of the other Crusaders lost their lives, but considering the size of the battle, only a handful of casualties is a rather good result. I’m sure Ary still isn’t happy with it, but she’s too hard on herself as is. I’ll try to get all of the details out of the group that was with her. Margin: Perhaps Nurah will share.
We had our own troubles to deal with at the time. By the time we arrived in Silvershore, there was not one, not two, but three armies of cultists closing in on town. We just never get it easy, do we? The villagers were thankfully willing to believe us without too much trouble and we marshalled as much of a defense as we could as quickly as possible. Xan, Isilme, and Ehren used their powers to impede the armies one by one, slowing them down so their coordinated attack became three separate battles. Isilme is a remarkable strategist. I like to think I’m relatively intelligent in small unit tactics, but Isilme is a brilliant strategist when working with a full army. Using the terrain and magic to control the battlefield, we managed to take the first army down with essentially no casualties and minimal fuss.
The second fight wasn’t really much harder, though we were starting to struggle a little more. We pretended to be cultists from the army we’d just defeated Margin: One day that trick isn’t going to work and got the enemy commander in close. Unfortunately for us, he was a babau and not a particularly nice one. He managed to get away using his teleportation almost immediately though we routed his army in short order.
Then came the third army. And let the records show how much I hate demons. Especially ones that can give their cultists the ability to store living balls of lava in their armor. F*ck those guys. The enemy commander Margin: And overall commander from what we learned. had a pet magma ooze that he carried around under his clothes without so much as a car in the world. And a unicorn that he tortured in to near total insanity. I’m not afraid to admit that I enjoyed putting him in the ground. Unfortunately, he had more magical support than the last two armies and he managed to cause a fair few more casualties than the last two fights. No one in our group was permanently injured, but a number of the villagers fighting with us died. I suppose there are worse ways to go than defending your home and loved ones, but it was still a sobering moment.
Isilme managed to calm the unicorn and he’s starting to recover a little, but I fear that it will be a long time before he’s anywhere near ‘well’. Hopefully, he’ll begin to regain some of his composure with time and a gentle hand of friendship. We’ll see. A few of the cultists surrendered, so that had to be dealt with as well. Xanderghul wanted to kill them where they stood. He can go jump in a planar rift. So we took them in and the local chiefs had to decide what to do with them. Xanderghul tried to use a speech trying to convince the chiefs to spare their lives to act like he was somehow morally superior when he’s been advocating murder every time we have enemies surrender. I’ve remembered why I stopped seeing him now and I’ve thankfully developed better taste since then. We managed to convince the chiefs to turn them over to us once the army arrived. We’ll still need to deal with the issue of holding and feeding prisoners on our march, but once we take Drezen, we should be able to resolve that. Margin: It’s just going to be holding them until then that’s a pain. Ary and the army made it to the town later in the day and for the most part we’ve simply been wrapping things up. The cultists mentioned a mine where another army is planning a summoning and collecting resources, so we’re going to have to go there tomorrow and clear that out before heading to Drezen. Hopefully this will be our last stop. We’re going to run out of time if we keep getting side tracked.
With her thoughts a little more in order, she goes to find Ayavah. She hadn't had the time to talk to her since the heated debate with the clan chiefs and Ary had essentially made her responsible for looking after her.

Ledsa nods, sitting in the back corner of the wagon in a small nest of furred cloaks she has built for herself. "Diolch yn fawr am eich, Isilme."
Külə sleeps next to the wagon in the snow. The army sets up camp outside of Silvershore, not wishing to intrude on the villagers' small town more than they have already, and also to form a defensive perimeter around it should the demons return to try and attack them in the night.
Late, late in the night, when the only people still stirring are those few keeping watch, Külə awakens with a start. He rears up onto his hind legs, rocking the wagon as he does, whinnying in a sheer panic.
"Master! Master! Is that you? Where are you?!?" He shudders, pacing around agitatedly in the snow. "Maggot is sorry, master, Maggot did not mean to get lost.... please do not punish Maggot."

"Mangvhune..." he growls. He lowers his head and gets ready to charge at the laughing demon.
Meanwhile, Isilme's cry rallies the crusaders into action.
"Demon! Demon in the camp!" The alert sounds through the camp, reaching Hinagiku's ears at last.
The flurry of activity seems to snap Mangvhune back to his senses, though he is still on the ground, on his back. His claw goes for the hilt of his sword... at that moment five crusaders come to Isilme's aid, swords drawn. Külə charges recklessly at the fallen babau, but the agile assassin rolls out of the way just in time.
He smiles crookedly at Isilme. "I'm watching you, elf. I'll hear your lovely screams soon enough."

Xanderghul's curled tightly into a little ball underneath a military-issue blanket on a bedroll. He hears some sort of commotion outside, and begins to rouse... but then he changes his mind, rolls over, and grumblingly falls back to sleep. He didn't go through thousands of years looking out for himself only to turn his nose up at the benefit of having people look out for you when you're asleep. Let the night watch people handle whatever it was.
Isilme |
"Mangvhune infiltrated the camp," Isilme replies when the others arrive. "He will not return tonight, we should get rest. We will need to discuss countermeasures for dealing with him tomorrow in our travels." Isilme turns back to Külə, " Külə, would you take issue with sleeping blindfolded? It might help avoid inadvertently afflicting others with your gaze when you wake up with a start," she asks politely.

Val groans and rubs her eyes. "Great... I'm going back to bed then. If anyone else with a grudge against us decides to infiltrate camp, shout some more, okay?"
Hinagiku. |
Her mind promptly brought to attention by Isilme's call to arm, Hinagiku had quickly abandoned her meditation and left the cultists alone to head in the direction of cry for help. Though, not quickly enough, since the demon disappears right in front of the monk.
"This is not good." Hinagiku simply answers to Isilme, her brow ever slightly furrowed. ".. Miss Isilme, how do you know that it won,t be back?"
Hinagiku, having noticed the tole taken by Külə on Isilme, she approaches the azata and gently tries to help her to sit down and relax a bit.
"It would be wise to find a way to tract the oni.... before it can bring any more harm to you or anyone else in the camp. But you are right, this is something we can discuss tomorow."
After making sure Isilme is okay, Hinagiku returns to her meditation next to the prisoners.

Ary - if you want me to assume you use Keep Watch every night, please state as much on your character sheet. If you wish to use Keep Watch on someone else, you must declare so before everyone goes to sleep, or otherwise turn it into a routine by declaring as much on your character sheet.
If you're wondering, there is a Command Tent where Ary sleeps. Everyone else has their own small camping-style tents for privacy, each with room for two.
"hrrrmmmphphl," groans Ayavah in response to Valaria, rolling over agitatedly. The tiefling sleeps like the dead.
Later, Külə sighs and nods to Isilme, his eyes pointed to the ground morosely. "Very well."

The heroes each recover 1 MP. Assume you are at full HP. Isilme may not recover spells, as her rest was interrupted. Other abilities refresh as normal.
The next morning Ayavah arrives tardy to the Command Tent where the other heroes have already gathered. It is before sunrise, as the heroes wish to send out scouts before the army marches. Outside it is snowing lightly, and it is bitter cold.
"Rise and shine, beautiful! It's a new day!" Anevia chirps pleasantly as she brushes past the groggy sorceress - the poor woman is not a morning person - her hair is in disarray and there are dark circles under her eyes.
"ughhhhhhhh," she responds, looking like utter death. "too.... early...."
Chevalier Irabeth betrays a small smile as she watches her wife, but she is soon back to business. Nurah, Ser Ilivan, and one of his rangers, Masym, an thin, blonde man, also stand in the tent. "So if I remember correctly Hinagiku, Ser Ilivan, and Masym will leave to scout Vilareth while the army marches on Mantarin... the rest of you will scout ahead as our advanced group. Now, I think -"
Irabeth is interrupted as Markus emerges into the tent, a blast of cold air accompanying him. "Apologies for the interruption," he says, unsmiling. "I just wanted to let you know before we march - a number of the soldiers have succumbed to gray pox and are unfit to march. Around... 15 total. I'm having the clerics prepare spells accordingly, but it will take them a minimum of two days to recover."

Assuming Xanderghul is using Endure Elements on himself.... anything else I should assume, buff-wise?
Once all 6 of you are ready to go, we leave.
Xanderghul |
Xanderghul's time studying his spellbook is, as it has been for the last several days, extremely uncomfortable. His teeth chatter as his eyes scan the pages containing the formulae for endure elements, and he casts the spell to ward off the cold air as soon as he can. He sighs contentedly as he begins to warm up before dressing and pulling on all of his gear, and heads to the command tent.
Xanderghul is relatively content to listen and wait as the plan they had discussed the previous day is laid out. When Markus bursts into the tent, explaining that some of the soldiers have the grey pox, he raises a finger to provide input - "Why don't we just include these soldiers in those we leave behind at Silvershore? Surely some of the Kellids here have expertise in healing. I bet Isilme could talk them into providing some basic medical care for our sick soldiers, and if they're paladins they can prepare lesser restoration themselves, keeping themselves relatively healthy while they wait to get over their sickness."
"I don't even necessarily think that we need to leave more soldiers behind. Just swap out some of the healthy ones we would leave behind for the sick ones. It's not like they can't fight if it came down to it."
We just need someone with two and a half hours to spare to make some Heal checks to give our soldiers +4 on their saves against the disease. Surely we can talk one or two Kellids who have Heal trained into helping out with that.
Ehren Ferron |
A night of rest seems to have done Ehren some good; while still visibly weary, he no longer hobbles around like a sluggish old man. He stands at attention, a combination of druidic magic and Kellid stubbornness warding off the frigid air. His fingers drum against his staff as he ponders their dilemma - he had honestly forgotten all about the disease that schir carried with them.
"The healers have their hands full with the village's own wounded, but I am sure they can be convinced to take on ours as well," Ehren reasons, glancing at the others. "But while I am sure that they are capable enough warriors in spite of their sickness, I do not think it is wise to count on it. We should stick with the plan, while also leaving the wounded to be tended to. If worse comes to worst, this leaves Silvershore with more defenses in our absence."
Updated Ehren's spells prepared. As usual, he casts ant haul (with place magic) and endure elements right off the bat; he'll cast greater longstrider (with place magic) right before we head out.
Xanderghul |
lesser restoration is a 1st-level paladin spell. A 4th-level paladin with 12 Charisma can prepare and cast it.
Xanderghul turns his nose up. "I expect no more than I've been told they're capable of. To do more would be foolish." He raises his eyebrows at Markus and crosses his arms. "Do you know what your soldiers are capable of?"

Keep in mind that Lesser Restoration doesn't cure disease, just gives you a chance of negating some of the effects. Some diseases hit multiple stats or you could just roll shitty on your healing (1d4 healing vs 1d3 dmg) Honestly though, even with good luck prolonged use of LR to negate the penalties should result in death if you fail enough saves, as you're just masking the symptoms of the disease

It keeps you alive longer and gives you a better chance to shake the disease off yourself, especially if the disease deals Constitution damage (you know, the only kinds of disease that you can die from). There's no reason for soldiers who aren't in the direct line of duty to not prepare it.

Oh, wait. Paladins are immune to disease... so it's probably not the paladins that are sick anyway. :P

What, wait, so all our paladins are good looking/ inspiring people who can't think for themselves and head into danger without a second thought... huh... I think I am starting to prefer the cavalier and fighters.

I mean. It's not like I actually know what a stat array on our paladins looks like or anything. Just that it would be exceedingly poor to have a paladin with Charisma so poor that he couldn't use any of his abilities.
Hinagiku. |
I know, but paladin's with 15 point buy... sounds hard to pull without doing what you just said, dumping int and wis.
Before reuniting with the others, Hinagiku fetches a few supplies for the cultist prisoners, and, gently, she wakes up the ones sleeping to give them a bit of dried bread and water. After making sure that each of the prisoners receive an equal share of the food, she speaks a few words with each, trying to figure out how well they are faring.

Once at the command tent, Hinagiku simply nods to the people present, nodding smiling faintly when Anevia cheerfully arrives in the room. Then, she obediently listens to Irabeth and, when he comes in, Markus.
”Please, forgive me for interrupting, but if Ser Illivan, mr. Masym and I must scout, then we should leave right now. I don’t want to trivialize the health of the people who are sick, but departing now or in 10 minutes might mean life or death for the soldiers of for Vilareth. Can we take our leave Ary?” she says in a gentle yet strong tone.

Val does her best not to laugh at the contrast between her two friends as Ayavah and Anevia both arrive at the command tent. "Don't worry about it," she says, putting an arm over Ayavah's shoulder. "Not everyone is a ball of sunshine like Anevia. Maybe it's a being married to a paladin thing." She smirks and leans over, whispering in Ayavah's ear. "Maybe I should give you a special wake-up call tomorrow." She winks at her own joke and then turns her attention to the discussion so they can work out exactly what they're going to do next.
"I believe that was the plan," she agrees. She frowns as Markus arrives with bad news. She's silent for a few moments as the group discusses their options. "Even if the villagers can't afford to provide help to the men, simply having a place to rest and recover out of battle would be a boon. Setting up camp near town and leaving a few of the cleric to help treat them while the rest of the army takes care of the mines may be best."
