Heveel Ash'maïm |
Thanks haha :D
Heveel comes out of whatever "meditation" he was in, however his eyes stay half-closed. "What is it, Timmon? What kind of ship? The clouds in my eyes are not leaving..." he says exhaling a impressive amount of smoke.
Jinhong Yeou, the Crimson Fox |
Jinny staggers up on deck, a little bleary eyed.
Nobility & Local both Class skills for me, but sadly no ranks in them yet.
What's going on?
GMG |
Timmon, you can take another round of actions, others: you are coming on deck this round.
Timmon Gall |
"It looks like the border guard flag! I mean the ship has a flag like the border guards'."
Timmon moves to the rail closest to the approaching ship and waves.
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
Does this look like a warship? Is the crew uniformed?
Jinhong Yeou, the Crimson Fox |
Jinny looks for a good hiding place for the braid, either on the ship or on her body.
Sleight of Hand: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20
GMG |
And the ship moves closer.... it is now at some 150 feet distance. You see people moving about on the other ship, but they take care not to expose themselves to arrows or bolts coming from you.
Jinhong Yeou, the Crimson Fox |
All right, it looks like a fight.
Jinny climbs up into the rigging and prepares her shortbow from a hidden vantage point.
Climb, take 10: 10 + 0 = 10
Stealth: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5 Okay, so the rigging is not the best hiding place apparently.
GMG |
The rigging has all these wide spaces between the ropes. Rather difficult to hide when you are climbing...
GMG |
Timmon notices the sleek lines of the ship and the yellow uniforms of the crew...
Timmon Gall |
These warlike preparations puzzle Timmon. He shouts to his crew, "But they are the same as the border guards! They have the spear banner."
Timmon's obviously not familiar with false flag ploys.
Check our DM's first June 22 post. (He had a few that day.)
Heveel Ash'maïm |
I don't have those skills, though.
Heveel frowns. The same? What would they want?
GMG |
Despite the warnings the ship continues to close at fast speed. At the latest possible moment it comes alongside. You see a woman and three men come out of the cabin. The woman walks to the side of the ship and casts a spell! The men jump on board of your ship!
The men are unarmed, the woman has a scimitar in her left hand.
2 HD or less: The creature is unconscious, blinded, and stunned for 2d4 ⇒ (1, 3) = 4 rounds, then blinded and stunned for 1d4 ⇒ 4 rounds, and then stunned for 1 round. (Only living creatures are knocked unconscious.)

Jinny moves along the lowest boom from her hiding place, drawing her rapier as she glides deftly through the obstacles,
Acrobatics, narrow ledge: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (15) + 9 = 24
jumps off the end,
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (1) + 9 = 10 That's enough for 10 feet of jump, which I think is enough since the main boom usually is wider than the ship itself. If I need more I'll spend Panache to get up to DC15.
and somersaults midair to land behind the woman.

Timmon weathers the wash of rainbow light over him unfazed.
"A witch!"
Grab that flanking bonus!
I thought there were yellow uniformed crew on the deck of the other ship. Are they moving to attack too?
GMG |
The uniformed crew are not involved in the combat, other than trying to keep out of the way. Also because this encounter happens on a wide stretch of water no driving checks are needed ;-)
Belina fires a shot and wounds the woman, after which Jinny does some amazing acrobatics and also wounds the female spellcaster. She goes down!

You know just where to strike to temporarily stun a foe.
Prerequisites: Dex 13, Wis 13, Improved Unarmed Strike, base attack bonus +8.
Benefit: You must declare that you are using this feat before you make your attack roll (thus, a failed attack roll ruins the attempt). Stunning Fist forces a foe damaged by your unarmed attack to make a Fortitude saving throw (DC 10 + 1/2 your character level + your Wis modifier), in addition to dealing damage normally. A defender who fails this saving throw is stunned for 1 round (until just before your next turn). A stunned character drops everything held, can't take actions, loses any Dexterity bonus to AC, and takes a –2 penalty to AC. You may attempt a stunning attack once per day for every four levels you have attained (but see Special), and no more than once per round. Constructs, oozes, plants, undead, incorporeal creatures, and creatures immune to critical hits cannot be stunned.
Special: A monk receives Stunning Fist as a bonus feat at 1st level, even if he does not meet the prerequisites. A monk may attempt a stunning attack a number of times per day equal to his monk level, plus one more time per day for every four levels he has in classes other than monk.

Jinny prepares the red-belted man for a knockout by Timmon. Although the man is able to crouch below the swinging quarterstaff once he is not able to deflect it twice and goes down!
Heveel's eagle appears and claws and bites the green-belted man! Seeing that Timmon is again in poor health the sylph hurries down the stairs and touches our monk. Belina shakes her head slowly and looks down at her dropped bow...
That seems to be the moment the enemy has waited for as they both try to take the halfling out. Desna smiles on Belina when all the attacks miss!

The rest of the journey over the Sea of Eels is uneventful and after a few more days you find the spot where you are supposed to land. A pathfinder representative is waiting for you and he accepts the ship while giving you a map for the final, overland, part of the journey to Nesting Swallow.
The end of Part II

Finally, Timmon! The dice rolls you deserved :D
Thank you, GMG!
Jinhong Yeou, the Crimson Fox |
Thanks for a great scenario, GMG! 10/10 would adventure with anyone in this group again. Speaking of which, will there be a part III?
GMG |
Start of Part III!
Nesting Swallow is located deep in the heartlands of Shokuro, a few weeks’ travel from the end of your river journey. This last leg of the trip takes you through mostly civilized country, and passes without significant event. Over the past week, the towns have grown smaller and further apart, as the interior of Shokuro is for the most part extremely rural.
Tedium has become a constant companion in the countryside of Shokuro. The roads have dwindled in size and maintenance as the days have passed; what was a wide, stone-paved highway near the river towns has become a narrow, winding track of dust, sometimes fading entirely into the surrounding terrain. Travelers along it have likewise grown scarce as the days drone on. Still, the journey’s end lies no more than half a day’s travel away, in the village of Nesting Swallow, a hamlet so small it could easily vanish into a crease on a map. No more than a few more miles through these sparsely wooded hills and valleys rests the last known home of Master Li Yao, and here, with luck, his descendant still lives. In this speck of farmland may be found one who can, by right of blood, bring forth the forgotten power of the Braid of a Hundred Masters.
Cresting a rise, the trail winds its way up a small hillock that overlooks a large valley beyond. Not far from the hill, a dead mule and overturned cart lie in the middle of the road, two cloaked figures rummaging through the spilled contents of the cart while making disapproving cawing noises to a pair of similarly dressed riders on horseback. Two other horses stand on the side of the road, presumably mounts for the two on foot. The mounted figures loom over a half-dozen shabbily dressed peasants. One of the riders urges his horse forward and makes a threatening slash at the face of a man trying to shield several children behind him.
The rider menacing the family croaks at the father in a harsh, biting dialect of Tien: “You want to run? Leave early? We won’t stop you. But it costs! Gold, silver, where is it?”
Please update initiative and perception if those have changed
Jinhong Yeou, the Crimson Fox |
Perception and Initiative unchanged.
Jinny strides forward.
You there! What is the meaning of this?
Jinhong Yeou, the Crimson Fox |
I agree that's likely, but I have learned to not make snap judgements. For all we know the "victims" are lures to draw us in closer, or they could even be criminals themselves, Jinny whispers back.
She draws her rapier and steps forward.
Well?
Belina Bojan |
Belina calls to the peasants.
"Halt, good people. I am a bastion of law."
