"Let's go end this oni. I'm tired of looking at this place."


You follow the long tunnel for a hundred paces before it ends at a wide vertical shaft with a roaring column of water falling down the center. A stone walkway plunges in a steep and narrow spiral like a corkscrew along the edges of the shaft. The footing is damp and treacherous, but walking on air you have no trouble in the descent.

The way down is dizzying and disorienting, and seems to go on for a mile. Instead of getting cooler as you get deeper into the earth, the air grows steadily warmer and more humid. If nothing else, at least the stench of dung and decay is left behind, replaced by... something else.

Finally, the shaft reaches its nadir, where the waterfall drops into an underground lake, a hundred feet across. The water's surface is broken by jagged boulders that form makeshift stepping stones from the entrance to an arched opening in the south-east wall. Hundreds of screaming, leering faces cover the walls of the cavern, giving form to the deafening din of the waterfall.

You spot several massive fish moving in the dark water, just below the surface.

Heng peers about and notices the dark shapes beneath the water's surface. "There are great fish within. I do not know if they are dangerous, but let us stay high above the waters as we cross to the arch."


Staying safely above the water and rocks, you traverse the lake with no trouble. The opening in the south-east is a low stone shelf, forming a natural stair case of uneven ledges rising to a larger chamber to the north. A set of stone steps climbs from the middle to the topmost ledge.

As you reach the top, you notice the walls are once again worked stone, this time decorated with carvings of figures being torn apart by beasts. A wide arched hallway exits to the north. As you move that way, a grunting snort echoes from ahead, and a truly massive figure comes into view.

A male ogre mage, its skin of greenish hue and extended tusks glistening, rides atop a huge bull-like beast with hide like interlocking metal plates.

"What infidels approach the Bridge of Feasting Kirin? Who so insolently dares to breach the innards of Munasukaru's Penance?" the giant asks in a booming voice, its volume battling the distant roar of the waterfall. His mount snorts again, releasing a puff of green smoke from its nostrils.

Knowledge (arcana) DC 18:
The mount appears to be a massive specimen of gorgon, magical beasts with petrifying breath.

Perception (audible) DC 30:
After the oni speaks, even over the echoes of the waterfall, you can hear distant cries of alarm from further beyond the oni.

Malnival takes a few steps forward and blasts the oni with three fiery rays. One is absorbed by its spell resistance, but the other two leave blistered burns. Heng charges in close, slamming the oni with a flaming punch to the gut. Parity follows a few steps behind, attacking with a lunging slash, but Ryosanjin recovers enough to parry the strike aside.

Harlan rides Skygni forward before channeling healing energy. Kelda runs up towards the melee. Kiyomi moves into range to direct a magical scream at the oni, who reels but retains his wits. The giant beast remains paralyzed.

Ryosanjin juts his chin towards Heng, challenging the monk with a sneer. "I will end your wretched existence, mongrelman!" He moves a few feet back and slashes the large katana with precision, carving two deep wounds.

An affected ally receives a +3 morale bonus on saving throws against charm and fear effects and a +3 competence bonus on attack and weapon damage rolls.

Malnival moves in to attack, drawing a strike from the wary ogre mage as he runs through its defense. Heng steps up and manages to land a couple of punches before Parity drives Suishen straight up and through Ryosanjin's armor, straight to the oni's heart. With a gasp, it shudders and collapses to the floor.

Kelda moves up beside the others and Kiyomi begins to sing. The giant beast remains paralyzed.

At the end of the hallway, past the bridge, a number of hobgoblins round the corner. You see three warriors, a single female monk, and a giant. Screaming oaths to Munasukaru, they rush to engage.

Harlan, seeing a wall of gribblies coming at the group, enhances the attack of his warriors.

Make one extra attack as part of a full attack action, using its highest base attack bonus.
Gain a +2 bonus on attack rolls and a +2 dodge bonus to AC and Reflex saves.
Cast a single spell of 2nd level or lower as if it were an enlarged, extended, silent, or still spell.


Round Three
Initiative Order: Malnival, Heng, Parity [9], Harlan [6], Kelda [4] \\ Kiyomi [22], Jiaogu [17], Hobgoblins [10]

Harlan rides up behind Heng, casting a heal just before the monk charges off. Malnival moves up and attacks the paralyzed beast, hitting easily. Kelda does likewise.

Heng moves past the beast to the far edge of the bridge and roars in the face of the oncoming hobgoblins. The two affected warriors reel, but the female snarls and continues in to the fight.

Parity threatens and antagonizes the giant hobgoblin, who immediately bellows in rage and tries to push past its fellows, but remains blocked in the back. Harlan blesses the party while Kiyomi stays in the back and continues her performance.

Finally, the giant beast manages to shake off the holding spell. It roars, backing up a step before breathing a cloud of green gas over Parity, Malnival, Kelda and Harlan. On contact with the noxious mist, Kelda and Skygni are instantly turned into stone statues.

The hobgoblins cheer, banging their morningstars on their shields in a great ruckus. The female closes on Heng, swinging nunchaku at his head, but he ducks in time to avoid the strike.

Parity, Malnival and Harlan: DC 23 Fort save or be petrified.
