Its very strange to me to 'fight defensively' without actually making an attack but I believe its rules legal.

I know my group doesn't allow it without the PC actually attacking, although I don't know if there's any specific rules text to back it up. Couldn't he ready an action to fight defensively when an enemy comes in range and end up at basically the same place, only with a free swing when they approach? I guess that wouldn't help his AC if they decide to throw another javelin, though.

Tebati is firmly in favor of whatever makes Kieran less likely to get hit. She's not Bas'o. :)

Your Humble Narrator

Nothing actually says specifically that he has to make an attack roll to be fighting defensively, though I will hastily add that I will never allow it in non-initiative ("I'm declaring my Dodge bonus on you!"- any Goblins fans here?).

Edit: "You can choose to fight defensively when attacking". We'll treat Kieran as readying an action as tebati said- though in future hes probably a lot better off using Total Defence in such a situation.

But of course! And if there are any non-Goblins fans here, then they should check it out.

Way to go, Qhude! If Unwe were conscious, I'm sure she'd be favorably impressed by your prowess. :)

Ansha's turn....

Male Human (Mwangi - Bas'o tribe) Barbarian (Brutal Pugilist archetype) 4

When the lucks flowing your way it's best to ride the current as long as you can ;) - both of the bigguns last two actions missed by just a point!

Your Humble Narrator

Qhude, I can't find a definitive answer but everything i know about the PF rule system inclines me to believe you can confirm your crit on the leader.

So, need a crit confirmation roll from you. Ansha and Jakob are also up.

Male Human (Mwangi - Bas'o tribe) Barbarian (Brutal Pugilist archetype) 4

Crit confirmation roll is up for you AK if you choose to use it.

I'm on the fence about being able to crit on grapple maintains - though probably leaning towards them being unable to crit.

It's partially semantics, but I see the grapple maintenance flowchart thusly:
1. Attempt to maintain the grapple as a standard action
2. If successful, then choose to move, damage, pin or tie-up

So technically the damage isn't pinned to an attack roll at all and therefore is uncrittable. Not that I am going to refuse critting the biggun if you think differently ;)

Joana: You know how you said you saw a lot of Play By Post games dying as a result of Pathfinder Online going live in the announcement blog? In light of the emphasis Goblinworks seems to be placing on PvP in the game, I just don't see it happening.

I do promise you that if this PbP is still active when PFO goes live (which I really hope the PbP is), I will still be posting here regularly, even if PFO does away with its PvP focus and I try the game out. >.>

Here, SKR says Combat maneuvers don't have threat ranges and can't critically hit.

Follow-up post here:

Sean K Reynolds wrote:

Using just the rules in the Core Rulebook, what is the effect if you "crit" a combat maneuver roll? There's no discussion of it at all. It mentions 20 autosucceeding and 1 autofailing, but never says that it has a threat range, whether or not you need to confirm a critical threat with a combat maneuver, or what happens if you do manage to crit with one. There's nothing in the Core Rulebook, other than it's called an attack roll (which lets you know that bonuses from spells that affect attack rolls apply to combat maneuver rolls), that indicates you can crit with a combat maneuver, or that rolling a critical threat (which is 20 for all attacks unless otherwise specified) has any sort of followup action (such as confirming the crit or applying a crit effect).

Male Human (Mwangi - Bas'o tribe) Barbarian (Brutal Pugilist archetype) 4

Well there you go - Joana has better search-fu than me.

AK had that same complaint a few days ago. Temperamental thread, it seems.

I have that subforum closed and haven't kept up with any further developments past the announcement. My concern is that people's time playing Pathfinder online is finite and they might choose to spend it playing ... Pathfinder Online. :) I know a lot of play-by-posts go temporarily dark when the latest game comes out, whether it be Dragon Age or Skyrim or The Old Republic or whatever, and I presume PFO will be a much closer replacement for a game of Pathfinder, if their design goals are met.

I'd be quite content if PFO cannibalizes players from World of Warcraft or whatever the big MMO is by the time it comes out; I'd be sad to lose any players or DMs from my games. So I guess I really only care insofar as it affects me personally. :)

It's mostly a lot of arguing about what sort of PvP rules the game should use--free-for-all or consensual--with occasional suggestions about how it should be less like World of Warcraft or should avoid doing X that Eve Online or Ultima Online did. I actually am a pretty avid PC gamer too, currently play (and RP on) WoW, have tried most MMOs available at some point or another...And I still promise I won't abandon this PbP if PFO manages to snare me. ;)

Heck, I'm driving across the country in about two weeks, and won't be back til around January 1...and I still intend to find time to post here. XD

Male Human (Mwangi - Bas'o tribe) Barbarian (Brutal Pugilist archetype) 4

Well I'd reckon we still have 12-18 months minimum before we really have to start worrying about PFO. I'm a veteran of WoW, LotRO, PotBS, Star Trek Online, and Rifts - but I kind of went the other way and got hooked on PbPs and gave up the MMORPGs instead.

There'll likely be some ripple effects when PFO launches, but I personally don't think that it will replace what I and many others get from PbPs. So Qhude will still be around to act all sullen and passive agressive ;)

Also, I'll be off downunder (Australia) for the annual relatives visiting trek next week. I'll be away from 14th December through to 10th January, and while I will still be plugged in net wise - my posting rate will likely suffer during that time.

I'll check in as often as I can, but please don't hesitate to DM PC me if you need to in order to keep things rolling forwards.

Your Humble Narrator

Thanks Joana- tried some searches of my own that yielded nothing relevant, so your search-fu is strong indeed. I know in 3.5 it was an opposed check but in PF its more akin to an attack roll which is why I was leaning that way.

I personally, have no interest in PFO.

The PMG has just done very bad things (imo) to the Reply function. If you dislike it too, chime in on the thread and let him know.

According to Gary, the most problematic feature of the reply-function change is in actuality a bug, which removes most of my objections to it. I still think there's a place for quoting more than just the last response to a conversation, though, particularly in the PbP fora, but I could fairly quickly get used to not having that option. He's still open to input from PbPers in the thread linked above, if you have an opinion on it.

Meh, my search-fu and rules-lawyering lowered Kieran's AC and downed Qhude's damage output. I need to use my powers for good rather than for evil.

Re: PFO, I've never played an MMO. Don't have the uninterrupted periods of time for it. I played Baldur's Gates 1 & 2 plus expansions, Icewind Dale 2 (hated 1), Planescape: Torment, and Knights of the Old Republic 1 and never actually finished any of them. I'd always get stuck on some quest or fight somewhere and get discouraged and quit.

I was going to try to argue that soloing WoW ruined one of my former real-life players for around-the-table, teamwork-style D&D, but in retrospect, it only exacerbated party-unfriendly tendencies that he'd had for a long time. And honestly I think the literal years he spent trying to complete the Baldur's Gate series without picking up any of the NPCs was more disruptive.

I'm assuming that N'Bellocq is falling back to a position other than P17--perhaps Q17 or S17? Unless he really intends to bullrush Ansha out of P17....

Blame my poor eyesight. I had trouble scanning across the map when it was so small on my screen.

But there are two guys with spears chasing him...a little bullrush..a little trip...not his problem anymore. You are wearing high heals, correct? :-)

Your Humble Narrator

Dealt with it in my last post :).

Edit: Are you getting the map links I send you in thumbnails or something? iI you click on the image it should get bigger.

Male Human (Ijo) Monk 4 (Zen Archer)

Normally is does, but today my computer was giving me trouble. I would get pop up ads or it would give me a dead page. I've got a scan running now to see if spyware is to blame.

Your Humble Narrator

Download Spybot SD, very nice piece of software I used to run on infected machines when working as IT Support.

Male Human (Ijo) Monk 4 (Zen Archer)

I'll try that next. Using Malwarebytes right now which usual does good by me.

It's hard to complete a full-round action spell when you're knocked prone!

Good piece of software but they do different stuff, run both.

Doesn't Ansha's spell go off at the beginning of her turn? Or are you waiting for confirmation of where she casts it? Knowing whether they saved or not will probably make a difference to what she chooses to do on her initiative.

Your Humble Narrator

I'm happy to resolve the action in two parts if necessary but the battlefield has changed since she declared her targets so i'll give her the opportunity to change where shes casting it.

All this talk of rainbows and color spray makes me think of the music video to Ke$ha's song "Blow"....

Male Human (Mwangi - Bas'o tribe) Barbarian (Brutal Pugilist archetype) 4

I was excited to see that new avatars had been added - and excitedly checked... and found there are no new decent Mwangi avatars *shakes fist*

Your Humble Narrator

Jask's is ok.

Male Human (Mwangi - Bas'o tribe) Barbarian (Brutal Pugilist archetype) 4

You could stretch Jask's I suppose.... but he is Garundi ;)
There's Umagro - but the avatar looks more like a thief than a tribesman.

Would just be nice to have a few more options at the dark end of the skin colouration. Of the three Mwangi we have in the party we've got the avatars of an Osiriani, a Keleshite and a monster from Second Darkness.

Your Humble Narrator

Yeah the avatar choice is disappointing. Still, at least they added some.

Personal messaging in 2020 perhaps?

And here I'm disappointed that there are no new female elves with blond hair.

Male Human (Mwangi - Bas'o tribe) Barbarian (Brutal Pugilist archetype) 4

Heh - yeah, maybe. Should we make campaign buttons and put up flyers?

And definitely liking the new avatars in general - have already shaken up a few of my own profiles I wasn't 100% on. More is always better and I'm sure they'll get more trickling through over time.

Know what else I'm disappointed about? At least one of those people Ansha put to sleep is already on his feet again! (I think the raider at X11 would draw an attack of opportunity if he tried to move to wake the one at Y12 up again.)

Your Humble Narrator

They are both up and awake. 5 foot steps covered it and both rising provoked AOO's.

Male Human (Mwangi - Bas'o tribe) Barbarian (Brutal Pugilist archetype) 4

On the bright side - there'll likely be a slight warming of the frost between Qhude and Jakob knowing that the latter has stood up in defence of the wagons and bloodied his hands :)

I'm assuming "the flasks Jakob warned us about" are Kaava musk, although I'm not sure he ever mentioned it IC. Did he tell us how to wash it off? And as hard as it's raining, does that not count as "immersion in water within 1 round of exposure?" I was kind of assuming that create water would prove helpful against it if Tebati could cast it quickly enough, but if this downpour isn't enough and we actually have to have a nearby lake or river something within 1 round of us to do anything about it, there's no way to take precautions.

Ah, I didn't realize you could 5-foot-step diagonally. But yes, on the bright side, Qhude and Jakob may mend their fences. On the not-so-bright side, there are no lions afoot!

EDIT: Jakob said something like, "'Ware the flasks!" but I don't know he ever said it was kaava musk. I'm also kind of curious if prestidigitation can be used to clean it.

Your Humble Narrator

The rain is heavy but its not full immersion.

There are lions on the map :P.

That was a typo. I meant, There are now lions afoot. XD

Tebati would try create water anyway, just in hope, but I'm not sure if Jakob ever actually told us about any of the stuff he researched. He never mentioned passing on what he learned in the Custodian's library. She doesn't have the Knowledge to have a chance to know about it herself.

Your Humble Narrator

No he didn't mention it in detail but Tebati might think something's amiss merely by what the warrior said.

Ansha wrote:

The first diagonal always counts as 5 feet.

Ansha wrote:

What he exactly said was:
Jakob Mulle wrote:
"Ware the flasks, they will mark you for the beasts."

Of course, it's a pretty fair assumption that we're going to try to avoid anything they're throwing at us. Knowing what to do if we were hit anyway would be more helpful. :P

And, no, he didn't say it was Kaava musk. I just know that's what it is, from reading Heart of the Jungle during character prep. Sadly, Tebati isn't in possession of any knowledge about it beyond what Jakob told us. (Although it's actually a good thing for her IC, as it's one less thing for her to worry about right now. On the bright side, if Ansha's eaten by lions now the fact that the stuff will keep attracting predators for four days won't matter!)

Joana wrote:

Honestly, now that she's marked, the rest of the group is better off if we just get out of the way and let the lions eat her. They'll focus on Ansha and ignore the rest of us, and the caravan won't have to worry about fending off dangers drawn by her scent for the next several days. It's a win/win! ;)

D: So mean. ;_;

DM Alexander Kilcoyne wrote:

Where are the lions btw? You said they've appeared, but there's no link to a new map. Coordinates?

Your Humble Narrator

Waiting for N'bellocq's action as its not efficient for me to make a map update for a single person. GH13-16.

Is that 13 and 16 or 13 through 16? How many lions are there? :P

Well, Ansha, you've got all of Jakob between yourself and being torn to pieces. If Qhude had let the leader run when he tried, there might be someone else to defend you.

Ansha wrote:

Not that it's an available avatar, but have you seen the updated Queen Telandia in the Inner Sea World Guide? She doesn't look as much like Ansha as the old version does, but I like the new portrait.
