I need some idea of where you are going to look at the documents, do whatever housekeeping (like scribing spells into spellbooks and praying) is involved in levelling up, and make plans. Could someone make a decision, so I can give a bit of flavour and move things on a bit? If I might be so bold, you need somewhere secure, like somebody's lodgings, a decent tavern, or something like that - Norn's front room is probably not a suitable place, given that there are homicidal Cyrans hanging about.

Also, has anyone tried a Knowledge (Religion) check on the amulet yet?

I take it the scout has well and truly escaped?

Lightbringer would really, really like to go back and investigate the site of the Daask attack on the shrine, but he will stick with the group and can be talked out of going there immediately ... unless Runzyl and one or two others want to come with? Of course, I don't have spell scribing or praying to worry about at this stage..

If we ARE holing up for a bit, I'll take someone else's suggestion on location, although given what happened at the shrine, Lightbringer will probably advocate somewhere "neutral" like a tavern.

If someone shows Lightbringer the amulet, he will try to identify it, although Nox may do as well or better at that. If I have the time to Take 20 on that check I will do so, for a result of 24 (and perhaps Nox or someone can "Aid Another"?). If a roll is required I get 6 (blech!)

I'll leave it to Janosz to track him, but it looks that way.

Fine - splitting the party is no problem if that is what you want to do (mwahahahahaha!!). It is certainly logical for Lightbringer to want to do that, and I have no problem with it.

You can take 20 on it - the spoiler is above.

EDIT: actually, the spoiler is about 100 posts back, so here it is below:

Spoiler:
The amulet is a holy symbol of the Path of Light, the kalashtar religion.

"We should get out of High Walls before those fool Cyrans find more curage in company strength. Since we are down here already, and the notes may well lead us back into High Walls, I suggest we don't go far. There is probably a tavern or two near the ightning rail station, Which IIRC is in lower Tavick's Landing and there should be enough Orien activity in the area to make sure none of the rival gangs have taken roost."

"Lightbringer, I know you wish to return to the shrine, to see what we can learn of your friend, and we shall, soon. I suspect it would be an ambush, as easily as they found we were there before, they would certainly know when we return. Let's be armed with weapons as well as information," I say thumping the bulge of the book in my backpack.

HPs: 96 / 96, APs: 11/8 Effects: Karnnathi Wizard (Universalist) 12 / Cataclysm Mage 1

Any praise for his spellcasting the mage acknowledges with a nod, but otherwise shrugs off. It was a practical maneuver and honestly it was more Lightbringer's impressive bulk and imposing presence that broke the Cyrans' will.

When Trose first points out the slipped rope, he scowls and sighs with frustration. "We've attracted enough attention for one morning. Janosz- unless you can catch our little stalker's trail quickly it's time to move on before those poor wretches have time to talk too much." In repsonse to Lightbringer he replies, "Yes, a body wearing some kind of symbol of faith I've never seen before, but we also found Norn's journal upstairs. It's going to take a while to sort through.

At Trose's suggestion of staying in the area he replies, "I still have a few things back at my room in Middle Menthis- we could figure it out there with a little more privacy. Either way I'll need a little time to prepare for this evening, and I have to say I wouldn't mind a chance to clean up a little. The facilities these last couple of nights have left something to be desired. If you want to stay local, I can take public transportation from the Orien terminal, prepare in my rooms, gather my things and meet back there. I will need to make an appearance at the lodging house today though to pay out my bill."

NPC'ing Janosz while Vatters moves house...

Survival check = 14.

Janozs finds a few tracks in the muck heading north, away from the fight - the warforged appears to have been running, and not bothering to conceal its passage. They stop at a drain cover, which appears to be slightly ill-fitting, as if it has been disturbed recently. It looks like a pretty tight squeeze for anything bigger than a halfling to get into.

Male Human Rogue 3/Urban Ranger 1/Dragonmarked Heir 2

"Nice try Janosz, but we aren't sending Nox in after it alone, so it got away clean, well dirty, this time."

"Ezreal, I know you would like to clean up, and gather your belongings, but lets check the book out first, before we head up to your abode. After the book, we can gather your things, and it should be nearly time to go back to visit Jendry."

I ask the group, "Shall we?"

The reason Ezreal wants to slope off is so he can study his spell book, now he has empty spell slots (i.e. it's about game mechanics and levelling). Likewise, Nox needs to pray to fill his. It might be better to let him (and probably Nox, as I'm NPC'ing him too at the moment) go or all decamp to where he lives. You can't study the book and papers (don't forget the papers) standing in the street - it will take hours to read and assimilate.

To be blunt, I don't really want too much time spent wrangling over where the PCs are going to read a book. Please make a decision - Ezreal (and Nox) have made their's already, and will go to Ezreal's pad for the morning to "freshen up". It will take the rest of the morning to read through this stuff (bear in mind, it's still pretty early in the day) and you could feasibly all meet up at lunchtime. You can decide on your next move then. You arranged to see Jendry in the evening.

Male Human Rogue 3/Urban Ranger 1/Dragonmarked Heir 2

Bah - casters... oh well. In that case...

"Ezreal, take Nox and Runzyl with you. Runzyl can watch your back while you 'gather your things'. The rest of us will review the materials we collected at the 'Alcohol Elemental' Good name for a pub near the Lightning rail station. Keep your heads down, and maybe a hooded cloak would help you Runzyl."

You'll have to think of some themed cocktails to go with that name. :-)

Male Human Rogue 3/Urban Ranger 1/Dragonmarked Heir 2

  • The Water Elemental - A clear drink of 2 shots Karrnathi Vodka, and 2 shots pure grain alcohol, it hits harder than you'd think
  • The Earth Elemental - Fermented Hosten Moss from the Eldeen Reaches, including small bits of the Eldeen Reaches
  • The Fire Elemental - 2 Shots of Brelish Brandy, 1 Shot of Xen'Drik Fire Weed Juice, 1 Shot of Sours, with hot sauce
  • The Air Elemental - An empty glass, with the illusion of alcohol inside

OK, let's assume that Runzyl, Nox and Ezreal head back to his digs near Morgrave University in Upper Menthis for the morning, and that Trose, Janosz and Lightbringer head to The Alcohol Elemental in Terminus to read the book. assuming you haven't done so already, I suggest you read the relevant spoiler and then work out what you want to do next.

The party make it on foot towards Terminus in Lower Tavick's Landing, where the lightning rail and the main road out of Sharn both enter the city. The area is full of inns for arriving travellers, and the crest of House Orien is also very much in evidence, controlling the lightning rail and coaching businesses as they do. Trose makes for a hostelry of his acquaintance, the Alcohol Elemental. Given its name, it's reasonably genteel - the elemental tag is probably more an in-joke about Zil elemental binding as its staff and clientele are primarily gnomes than an indication of wild alcohol-fueled binges. The party split up, with Ezreal, Runzyl and Nox heading to Menthis by skycoach to allow the casters to recuperate, while Trose, Lightbringer and Janosz stay in the tavern and peruse the papers.

Spoiler for the Trose, Lightbringer and Janosz:

Spoiler:
A gnomish waiter strolls over to the somewhat cramped booth. "What'll it be, gentleman? We have some nice earthy beers - I especially recommend the Eldeen Dark. If you prefer, we have chilled Mror vodka - like drinking the mountain air at the World's End. If your tastes run to something more fiery, how about our selection of Karrnathi whiskeys? Or we have water."

Spoiler for Ezreal, Nox and Runzyl:

Spoiler:
The skycoach rank is busy, but after a short queue the three companions get airborne and head for the university district in Menthis. The morning sun glints on the dome of the library as they descend. Ezreal's digs are in a fairly cramped warren of streets amongst bedsits where the the university students reside. There are plenty around, even at this time of the morning. Some hurry to lessons, while other walk in small groups and chat. One human lad unconsciously strokes a hobgoblin-style forked beard he has carefully cultivated on his pink, rounded, spotty face as he reads a textbook in a doorstep.

Ezreal's room is on the second floor (that's the third to any Americans) of a tall house turned over to accommodation. By the front door, Ezreal takes out a letter from his pigeonhole, glances at it and put it in a pocket in his robe. He leads Runzyl and Nox to his chamber, which is neatly tidied in military fashion. The sound of someone practicing some sort of wind instrument can be heard faintly through the walls.

OK, study and pray away. Not much for Runzyl to do, unless he has wants to wander off somewhere else in the meantime.

Spoiler for Ezreal:

Spoiler:
The letter is from your commanding officer, Captain Yeorvos, enquiring as to progress in securing passage to Xendrik.

Spoiler:
I order Eldeen Dark, Dragon Wings, and fried Talentan Tubers, (Beer, Wings, Fries) and begin the task of diviying up the papers to go through. I specifcally chose a booth seat, where I could face the main entrance, and as subtely as possible lock and load my crossbow, and sit it in my lap.

I spend my time split between eating, reading, and watching the door for trouble. I will wait till everyone gets here to really discuss the info.

Runzyl makes no real attempts to disguise himself despite Trose's suggestion as the group heads to Ezreal's residence and settles in for a few hours of rest and research. While Nox spends his time in devotion to his deity and Ezreal pours over his spellbook, Runzyl finds himself feeling awkward and aloof. After a few minutes, he begins pacing in the room, occassionally glancing over Ezreal's shoulder to look at the pictures and diagrams in his spellbook, and then finally settles into a chair and slumps, looking quite bored and slightly annoyed.

Once seated, the elven warrior broods quietly for a few moments before removing his armor and begins to engage in routine maintenance of both it and his weapon. He passes the remainder of the time in this fashion until the spellcasters are ready once again.

It only takes 15 minutes to prep a spell, this isn't a 12 hour guard duty

Huh. I thought it was an hour. Still, 15 minutes with nothing to do is a long time for a character like this. :D

HPs: 96 / 96, APs: 11/8 Effects: Karnnathi Wizard (Universalist) 12 / Cataclysm Mage 1

Prepping the spell takes 15 minutes. I have two to prep, but I'm also adding the 2 new spells I got for leveling into my spellbook. That is the more serious time investment. I also wanted to grab my light crossbow which I haven't been carrying around, because there was no IC reason I would have taken it to get a beer at the pub that 1st night and I haven't had the opportunity to get back here since. It seemed quite likely that if I didn't take the opportunity now I wouldn't have it in hand this evening when we meet up with Jendry. Also just for IC reasons, I'm going to use the baths here so Ezreal won't be looking like a greaseball who's been sleeping on floors for two nights and close out my bill for this room. I already owe for the last two nights I haven't stayed here. Runzyl and Nox are welcome to use the baths as well if they choose. If there is a separate charge for guests or something we can just add it to my bill. Then when we leave, and on the way to meet up with you all again, I'm going to send a message home to Karrnath and hopefully buy either a scroll or a tanglefoot bag to increase my usefulness during our more serious encounter this evening.

Assuming there is ample time to do so, Runzyl will also make use of the baths. He does not, however, have clean clothes to put on, so he will simply handwash the dirty ones he's been wearing to the best of his ability and put them back on. The double scimitar is never out of his line of sight, however, unless someone forces him to leave it behind.

Too tired for a proper post though I'd planned on it this morning. I'll go ahead and list the spells to be prepped and learned though in case we are waiting for me (rather than monday's office hours ; ) )to proceed. Prepped: Light and Color Spray (nothing too shocking there). Learned: Ray of Enfeeblement and Identify. Aubrey what kind of communication do you think is appropriate for Yeorvos? A letter like he sent or something faster? And when we leave here I'll just purchase a tanglefoot bag and scroll of True Strike before meeting up with the rest of the guys again.

Up to you really. You could send a letter, probably via the Embassy, which would get to him in a couple of days. House Sivis would be quicker, but costlier. The letter didn't seem to be terribly urgent in nature, more a polite enquiry as to what an underling is doing.

Lightbringer nods briefly at Trose’ words. He is indeed eager to visit the shrine, whether to learn what he can of the fate of Erfan, or take the fight to Daask, but there is wisdom in Trose’ words of ambush, and being prepared.

“May I see the holy symbol?” he asks Ezreal. He spends some time pondering the symbol and consulting with Nox while Janosz tries to track the missing warforged scout. After several minutes he looks up. “Nox and I believe it to be a symbol of the Path of Light, the religion of the kalashtar. The body you found, is there any way to tell whether it was human or kalashtar?”

---

Trose’ suggestion is followed, and Lightbringer decamps to the Alcohol Elemental with his two companions. After ordering water (to a sour look from the gnomish waiter), he begins poring over the documents with his companions. Initially he leaves most of the reading to the two humans, preferring to watch for trouble, and mentally plan his trip back to Rattlebones, but soon enough he is interested in the material contained in the journal despite himself.

“Intriguing.” He states at one point. “Were it not for the fact that I was commissioned for the Brelish rather than Cyran armies, I would almost wonder if I was part of the experiment that Norn was studying. I can certainly strongly identify with 201 – Faith.”

---

“Well,” he says when they are done, and compiling their notes to share with the others. “There are certainly some revelations contained herein. So it seems that Norn has willingly gone to Daask for protection. As distasteful as I find that, I can certainly see some sense in it from his point of view. That may complicate matters somewhat.

“It is a pity that the Scout escaped, it may have proved a valuable source of information, if only we could get it to say something useful. Still, given it’s fanatic nature that seems unlikely.

“There is a lead here in High Walls that we could follow, although I tire somewhat of following a trail of endless leads. I am afraid I am not cut out for the life of an Inquisitive, although I try to check my impatience.

“But what say you all? Should we go back to Karile at some point with any of what we have discovered to date? If for no other reason as to try to discover her true purpose in seeking Norn, and what she knows of the involvement of the Lord of Blades’ agents?

“And let us not forget that I wish to return to the shrine, and that we have an appointment with Jendry this evening.”

“House Cannith, Daask, the Lord of Blades, and now a follower of the Path of Light,” muses Lightbringer, leaning back in his seat. “I wonder just how many interested parties there are in this affair? And what is the connection with the Kalashtar? Perhaps they seek 773, I suppose that would make a certain amount of sense. At any rate, we should attempt to go back and collect the body at Norn’s apartment, and if we cannot identify it, at least give it a proper burial… Are we sure that it is not Norn’s body?”

Does Lightbringer know the burial customs of followers of the Path of Light? Taking 10 on a Religion check: 14.

"There is obviously much more here than meets the eye, and I hope that we haven't just learned too much to be 'safe' in the eyes of the Cannith. I would hate to become expendible for being too successful."

"Following these leads would lead us to this kobold, Uli, through the lily peddlar Venk. I doubt that Jendry has his dinosaur's claws pushed into High Walls, so we are going to be on our own for hunting him down."

"But later," my eyes narrow with obvious intent, "Lightbringer, I suggest you return to your shrine, but on the way aquire a thunder stone. Simply stand outside, hoping to lure any ambush out, the others will be waiting nearby, but out of sight. The thunderstone should give a clear signal for them to intercede."

"Meanwhile, as soon as we finish with Jenfry, I will make my own way there, so I can have a look around, and hopefully find some clue as to what happened."

...

Waiting for the others to return, and comment on said plan

In case it isn't obvious, I'm expecting some sort of discussion of the evidence to date. I appreciate that not everyone has had time to read it, or their character hasn't read it yet. However, if you feel you want to move on, let me know and I'll move on.

After a refreshing and much needed bath to soothe his aching wound and troubled mind, Runzyl dresses himself in the same clothes as before, donning the armor and carrying his weapon safely upon his back as Ezreal and Nox mill about the University to pick up a few small items and make their way to the Alcohol Elemental to meet with the others.

Shortly after arriving, Runzyl spots the others and attends them with Ezreal and Nox in tow. After the initial nods of greeting, Runzyl seats himself nearby and raises an eyebrow before speaking.

"What have we learned?"

Hope I didn't foul up anyone else's plans by including Ez and Nox with me here. Just trying to move things along.

Upon the return of the others, Lightbringer, Trose and Janosz give them a summarised version of Norn's notes. Although the three have discussed things amongst themselves to some degree, they try to hold their opinions until the newcomers have had time to digest the information, and perhaps draw their own conclusions.

Male Human Ranger 7/Eldeen ranger (Gatekeeper) 5/Fighter 1

Between sips of ale, Janosz tries to work out his deep confusion. "Y'know, if the notes hadn't specifically told us that this "Darkheart" character returned with a scout-type warforged, I would have thought that our little friend was the unpleasant construct. And we don't know who the dead guy is, or if he is even human! Man, what a day". He buries his head in his hands, groaning with frustration.

After a long pause, he straightens back up. "To me, it seems like the kobold is a good alternative, which we will need to look into sometime soon. However, I think that it would do us good to seek out "Faith". We know what her name is, and we know more or less where she is, or at least should be. At least she should be able to tell us if the corpse is really Norn. Another thing that also puzzles me is the Daask's motives here. Are they really that powerful - and is Norn that valuable to them?"

With an evil grin, he drains his beer. "I like the ambush idea a lot, though. Let's try to take someone alive this time, though - after all, dead guys don't talk so well. And if the little 'forged comes back, we now know that he has a master who might come looking for him if he is captured - letting us set a new ambush".

hp 73 of 156; AC 23 (29); Fort +15, Ref +8, Will +13 Warforged Paladin 9 / Exorcist of the Silver Flame 4; Effects: Bless, Airwalk, Weapon of Awe, Ironskin, Bull’s Strength

Lightbringer is silent for several moments, and when he does reply, Janosz can almost hear the frown in his voice. “From what I understand of Daask, they are not powerful in a worldly point of view, but their power in some districts of this city is certainly great. More than it should be. I do not know the power or reach of the self-styled Lord of Blades’ organization, but I doubt they could match Daask in a show of force within Sharn.”

He pauses again, as if thinking, before adding, “And Daask’s so called foot soldiers – gnolls and hobgoblins for the most part, could on average match a ‘forged in battle. So from that point of view, Norn’s decision to seek succour with them is at least partially logical. Whether Norn is of such great value to them I do not know, but like many criminals they would be largely motivated by greed, so it may just be that he is paying them well for protection.”

“As for Faith, I certainly would like to meet her, I believe we would have much to discuss. And I agree that she may assist in our investigation. However, forgive my ignorance of geography, but is not Wroat still some distance from here? Several days journey at least I would have thought, although perhaps the distance could be traversed quickly on the Lightning Rail. That time frame may preclude us seeking Faith at this point.”

He turns to Trose. “Your idea has merit friend. Now we need to formalise a plan and a sequence of events. What is the time now? Can we return to High Walls to seek Venk and Uli whilst daylight remains? If so, should we all go? Then, return to Jendry, and then back to Lower Dura tonight to investigate the shrine and act on whatever information we are able to acquire from Jendry.”

The time is about midday/lunchtime. Time, therefore, for an afternoon's activity before teatime (with lashings of ginger beer) and the visit to Jendry.

Runzyl takes in all the information presented to him, his head spinning with the vast web of intrigue and deceit. Guile and subterfuge were alien to him, and such dishonorable acts were almost beyond his ability to understand. As the others deliberated around him, the elf was clearly at a loss.

Finally, during a moment of silence, he chimed in what little he had managed to come up with.

"What if the dead man was also part of the Daask and the scout we met was his murderer? Perhaps Darkheart finally came for Norn and the Daask bodyguard was not sufficient to stop them?"

"Not much use for daylight down in High Walls, but we should go now, since it is exactly why we stayed down here."

"As for faith, I doubt there is much value in a trip to Wroat right now, but perhaps we could dispatch a letter, or better yet a message via the Stones, to at least see if she is well."

“Hold on a moment fellows. We do not know the exact location of this Venk, and I believe that someone in such a blatantly abhorrent profession would make some effort at remaining hidden. Will the whole group of us returning to High Walls and asking questions do anything other than stirring up the locals again?

“Although I do not much like the idea of sending some of our group into potential danger, would it perhaps make more sense for Trose and Janosz to go in ahead of us and ask around to discover Venk’s location before we all enter the district?

The watchman arches an eyebrow quizzically. However, when he sees the coin he smiles and, when the papers are returned after a cursory glance, it has dissappeared as if by magic.

"These papers seem in order, sir. As for Venk, you'll have to talk to the Keeper about him - he was found in an alley a couple of days ago. Nasty business - seemed to have had most of his skin flayed off him. We reckoned it was a deal gone wrong, and seeing as it was Venk we didn't see much point expending too much effort to find out who it was."

Try know: religion, the Keeper is one of the dark six, who snags souls away from their place in dolurh

Yes, you know who the Keeper is - it is common knowledge. However, you can try another Knowledge (Religion) checks, DC 20. Trained only.

Spoiler 1:

Spoiler:
Flaying and scarification are common rights among worshippers of the Mockery, one of the Dark Six.

If you get the first one, try another Knowledge (Religion) check, DC 15.

Spoiler 2:

Spoiler:
The worship of the Mockery is common among the more savage humanoids, especially those from Droaam. Daask is also made up of humanoids from Droaam.

Oh. Heh, failed my Knowledge (Eberron) check, I was thinking along the lines of the keeper of the city morgue or something like that!

Wow, natural 20 on the first Religion check! 14+4=18 on the second.

Lightbringer draws his companions a little away from the guard (after doing his best to ignore the minor piece of corruption that had just taken place), and speaks in a low voice. “It may be that I am coming to illogical conclusions on this matter, but flaying is a common practice amongst followers of the foul being known as The Mockery … who is worshipped fairly widely in Droaam. And it is known that many of the members of Daask are originally from Droaam. Could it be that Daask is trying to cut off any lines of enquiry into Norn’s whereabouts?”

He waits for this to sink in, and then continues. “At any rate, finding the kobold Uli has just become more difficult for us, now that Venk is gone. Assuming that whoever murdered Venk has not also done the same of Uli. What from here?”
