1 level dip for a wizard character

Advice

I am building a conjurer wizard for a Curse of the Crimson Throne campaign. He will have the Academae Graduate feat and focus on summoning. Because of this I am planning on a 1 level dip in a class that has a good fort save. The only class that has been ruled out is paladin.

Things that I weigh more heavily are BaB; good reflex saves; and Per, Swim, and Climb as class skills.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Slayer would get you everything you listed, as well as ranger (do you have enough info to pick a good favored enemy?). If either your wis or cha mod are good enough to get you much AC out of it then monk (chained or unchained), scaled disciple if cha is higher than wis.

Alchemist wouldn't get you all of the skills you want, but if you grab it at lower levels the bombs are nice, a few elixirs won't hurt, and a mutagen for emergencies.

Just some off the cuff ideas.

I second the slayer suggestion. Although the ranger gives some expanded UMD options. Studied Target is top notch and comes online immediately. I found it works best with ranged weapons.

Was going to suggest occultist, but it doesn’t offer two of the skills you want. The transmutation school can give you a strength enhancement that would be about the same as the +1BAB. But it doesn’t have a good reflex save either. Good fort instead. Yup, never mind.

T: Magical Knack (dipped class if caster).
T: usually metamagic cost lowering or +1 Fort or Rflx.

with conj you're looking at Augment Summoning feat.
I'd look at Wiz Diviner taking School Focus Conj, Augment summoning.

Classes

"Mäktiga Trollfor" party of (6) Lvl 5 arcane casters with details

If you are interested in my other builds, see some builds by Azothath, 2025

Cleric-Varisian Pilgrim 1. For weapon = bows, bastard sword, or gladius/shortsword. Nabbing a few spells and the divine list and for item activation. Use domain abilities at range on allies. Makes UMD unnecessary. Maintains usefulness at higher levels as healing never goes out of style.

Ninja 1. You could choose an archetype. All the Rogue luv without the problems.

Gunslinger 1. Dex based ranged touch (like Coin Shot:T1). You'll use it less at higher levels but it works with your second best stat.

Monk-flowing 2 for saves, martial competency, IUS, weapons... basic martial competency but 2 levels is steep.

Forester archetype hunter might be fun if you have a 12+ wisdom, doesn't have full bab, but good fort and ref, a switchable always on buff, a few more spells per day, many more scroll and wand options, and martial weapons (just in case).

Brawler is also an option if WIS and CHA aren't worth it for monk. Martial flexibility is good for temporarily grabbing that combat feat (dodge, precise shot, etc) you skipped to get another metamagic or other spell-focused feat.

Cleric or druid for the spell list is a fair choice, too, if that isn't already covered by the party. Sacred summons let's you avoid that Fort save on some summons, or you can open up the summon nature's ally spell/feats.

The Exchange

Unchained Monk.

+2 Reflex and Fort saves, +1 BAB, +1 AC (if you take Dodge as your Bonus Feat), and all your wishlisted class skills.

If you have at least 12 Charisma, take the Invested Regent Archetype. You give up the bonus feat but you get the ability to add +1 to any save for one round as a swift action an unlimited number of times per day.

Does your campaign allow retraining? Once you get to a moderate-to-high level and can afford all the save-boosting items you are likely going to regret the dip and want the extra spellcasting level.

Transmutation can give con instead of str, abjuration gives an early bonus to saves, and conjuration gives a small bonus to the duration of summons.

Studied target, like favored enemy, is more useful for someone who engages in direct combat. I was considering the ranger archetype 'warden' that changes favored enemy to favored terrain. Much of the campaign will be in an urban setting.

I'd look strongly at the feat Great Fortitude instead. If that +2 suffices, then it buys you a caster level in trade for a feat. Though admittedly slayer (for example) gets you some nice class features and BAB.
