mount (companion) for dwarf champion

Rules Discussion

Torvi Bjornsdotr Frosthold, a dwarf champion, wants a mount who is a bit more personalized and distinctive than the usual, ubiquitous Horse.

At first, she was thinking about a "Tactical Assault Unicorn!!" (a Rhino), but that Companion is PFS Restricted (as well as Legacy Content).

She finally settles on a ram (a Goat), whom she names "Sweet Willy." (A Goat is also Legacy Content, but I'm letting this slide.)

Torvi has chosen Auspicious Mount, with the Auspice specialization, along with the necessary prerequisite class feats. I want to ensure that I have calculated Willy's stats correctly, so I'd like for someone to double check me, please.

(Stats listed below.)

Since the Goat starts with Acrobatics as a specifically-included skill, should this skill be Expert (instead of just Trained) once he's graduated to Mature?

I have written my calculations for the skills as:
* "base" (initial stats for the Goat)
* the bonus for becoming Mature
* the bonus for Savage
* the bonus for "first specialization"
* the bonus for Auspice (the actual specialization itself)

I have also included a visual description of Willy. Since he's celestial, I've allowed him to have metallic tints.

Thanks,
Franklin

I haven't done the double checking. But that is the purpose for the post.

Normally I would use a character builder program like Pathbuilder2e or Wanderer's Guide. You would need the $5 paid version of Pathbuilder to have it calculate your companion's stats though. Wanderer's Guide might do animal companions with the free version.

Since OP has asked the community to double check their rules usage here, I think this is a good place for this thread, though it was marked as in the wrong forum. I'm gonna leave it, but correct me if I'm wrong!

Thank you, Maya. ^_^

On the subject on Rules Usage -- In addition to (still) hoping for confirmation that I've collected all the relevant stats for Sweet Willy, I am also wondering about the Tactical Assault Unicorn.

Since the Rhino is PFS Restricted, I understand that to mean it is not for use in PFS. But what about regular play? Of course, each GM is free to make their own determination within their own campaign. But what is Paizo's "official" recommendation (if any) on using non-PFS stuff?

Thanks in advance.

I can see the thread being in either Advice or Rules. So I think it is fine here too. Though OP may get different responses from different sections.

Looking at the post with rules in mind (rather than math and bonus values):

If playing in PFS, PFS Restricted means that you would need to pay for a boon for the character to have the companion. The Legacy content designation is not important in PFS. Legacy content is allowed unless there is a newer version with the same name. So for example, the Horse companion, you would have to use the stats and rules for Horse in Player Core, not the Legacy version.

If you are using PFS rules as a guideline for game balance of a home game, then you will have to work out the details with your GM and your table.

The Dwarf character is a Champion and from the look of things is Sanctified as Holy. Getting the Goat from the Faithful Steed feat would transfer the Holy trait onto the Goat as well.

But unless I am missing something, getting the Holy trait does not by itself grant language understanding or the ability to speak, or cause weakness to Unholy. The trait mentions that it is common for creatures that have the Holy trait to also have a weakness to Unholy, but that is not required. So a player character option would need to add that explicitly rather than relying on a 'typical' convention from a trait description.

Yeah, I think that is a perfectly reasonable bit of flavor to add to the companion. It isn't going to affect the mechanics any, and it gives something to the Goat's description to show the result of adding the Holy trait to the Goat Companion stats.

No, the Mature upgrade only increases skill proficiency for Intimidation, Stealth, and Survival - Acrobatics isn't on the list. The Savage upgrade also does not increase proficiency of Acrobatics (the Nimble upgrade does). The various upgrades often do increase the Dexterity attribute, and that will increase your final calculated bonus value to Acrobatics.

You could probably play the Rhino in PFS if you get a boon for it. I don't know which boon.

As for official recommendation... I expect that if they take the time to create it and print it in the books, that they hope that people will play with it and have fun with it.

The champion class feat Auspicious Mount, with the Auspice specialization, gives the mount the Holy trait, as well as the ability to speak and the weakness to Unholy.

Ah, yes. That would do it then.

The Rhino isn't PFS Restricted, it is PFS Limited. It is limited because it released in an AP and so PFS made it a reward for people who played that AP.

Paizo generally considers AP content to be on par with anything else they release, and limited stuff should generally be fine to allow if it's thematic to your game and if you stick to the rarity system guidelines.

Rhino specifically isn't above the curve in terms of animal companion power level.

So, the tactical assault unicorn, with wings (Auspice) and glitter (Celestial) is actually good-to-go? Torvi may want to retrain, to switch from the billy goat, then...

My thanks to all.
