Can class abilities be dispelled in pf2e?

Pathfinder Second Edition General Discussion

I’ll preface this by saying I’m still fairly new to Pathfinder 2e, but something I’ve noticed with spells like dispel magic and detonate magic is that they can interact with class abilities. Does that mean class features such as the Thaumaturge’s implements, Exemplar’s ikons, or certain Barbarian instinct that have the divine, primal, or *occult traits can actually be dispelled or blown up? Is that the intended design?

The target for Dispel Magic is "1 spell effect or unattended magic item", and similarly the target for Detonate Magic is "1 magic item or spell effect". Class features aren't spells, so despite sometimes being magic, their effects aren't spell effects.

To add on to this, class abilities aren't magic items either, not unless it explicitly says so. I could see some cases where that might be true, such as the champion's Blessing of the Devoted giving you runes, thus making the items magical items, though.

For Dispel magic there has been discussions on which is correct. That it counteracts spells or effects and items(as the first scentence). or spell effects or items. The text within the target should be the one to go after however.

But yes, Magical Effects aren't Spell Effects so while Dispell Magic specifically cannot counteract a Champions Aura there are still other means of counteracting magical effects in general.

For example, a Trueshape Bomb could be used against an Animal Instinct Barbarian to remove their Morph trait granted unarmed attacks just as well as it could be used to remove a Druid's Untamed Form spell effect or a Witch who cast Animal Form from a spell slot.

"As an exemplar, you select three ikons at first level. Typically, you will want to ensure at least one of your ikons is a weapon. Body ikons accentuate a physical trait of your body and so can’t be stolen, disarmed, dispelled, or otherwise taken away. Weapon and worn ikons are tied to items of power. When you select one, you gain a non- magical, level-0 item of your choice that matches its usage entry. Providence ensures you come across these items; you might be traveling along a path to find a spear in a tree that only you can dislodge, or you might awaken holding a gleaming sash you saw in your dreams."

So does this imply that exemplar icons can be dispelled or detonated

As the text lays it out, This is specifically body ikons that cannot be dispelled in the context that you cannot ever lose, misplace or otherwise be robbed of such an ikon.

Ikons are otherwise succeptible of being counteracted as usual as their effects come from the divine spark turning them and their effects magical (anything with the divine trait is magical)

Yes. Sort-of.

Worn and Weapon Ikons are a category of magical items. Dispel Magic could target them if they are left unattended, but could not target attended Ikon items (ones actively being worn, wielded, or stored in a pack or sheath that is held or worn). Detonate Magic can target them if they are attended.

Dispel Magic would make them a mundane item for 10 minutes. Detonate Magic would deactivate them for a week or destroy them if the enemy manages to get a critical success.

If the Ikon does get destroyed, the Exemplar character can attune to a new item using the normal Ikon replacement rules.
