Could you recommend a 2e AP (that is not a dungeoncrawl)?

Pathfinder Second Edition General Discussion

I have a (brand) new gaming group. We played through the beginner box, Troubles in Otari and than played through The Fall of Plaguestone. They would like to play an AP next.

Could you recommend a 2e AP (that is not a dungeoncrawl)? Something like War for the Crown (and is not Kingmaker, Age of Ashes or Agents of Edgewatch)?

Strength of Thousands or Quest for the Frozen Flame.

Thanks!

I just ordered Strength of Thousands. I hope it is good! :)

Are most APs dungeon crawls?

Also kingmaker, age of ashes and agents of edgewatch are dungeon crawls? That’s news to me

Sovereign Court

I think with Abomination Vaults, you'll spend 95% of the campaign in the same big dungeon.

Age of Ashes has quite a few dungeons (castles, caves, pocket dimensions etc.) and usually the big end boss of the book is going to be in something dungeon-y.

Agents of Edgewatch is a bit more urban flavored so some stuff is above-ground, but you do spend a fair amount of time indoors.

Both of those two do tend to have a fair amount of smaller establishments rather than put everything in the whole book into one dungeon.

I am currently running this campaign and, I have to say, it is one hell of a good experience so far. That might mostly be due to the players I have and the tweaks I've made to the story, but I would say it is in the top 5 campaigns I've played in the last twenty years of gaming. Players are just about done with book 4 right now.

What are your favorite APs?

Honestly, if you don't mind an evil (or "moraly flexible" party), then blood lord is probably your best chance in 2e for an AP that's akin to war for the throne. Quite a efty amount of politics between various factions, and the main "plot thread" is actually a mystery/investigation.

Also, if your player are interested by it, that ap is the perfect opportunity to play with a necromancer/undead PC, while it's much more difficult to integrate in other AP (you don't need to be a necromancer or undead to play bloodlord, but the AP was literally made with the idea to allow it in mind).

Wow! I wasn't aware of this AP. Thank you for pointing it out. It looks interesting! I played an adventure similar to this (concept?) in Eberron years ago, and I am sure I would enjoy it...,

But none of my players are interested in playing evil characters and when I mentioned Strange Eons to them they immediately said no to it. (Spelljamer and similar adventures are out of the question as well). They would like to play a game of thrones style AP (I guess war for the crown is almost like that).
But anything in Cormyr, Taldor, Tal'Dorei would be fine. (I guess Sword Coast and Varisia too).

I think you misread something.

I am currently "playing" (more like lurking) in an Agents of Edgewatch PbF, and I ran Age of Ashes (parts of it) for another group. Several people in the group have played Kingmaker the videogame, so those three were out of the question.

Ah, quite a shame, it's pretty much the only "faction politic" 2e AP that I'm aware of. I heard good things about strenght of thousands, and it's apprently much more diplomatic than most AP, but it doesn't seems close to war for the crown at all.

Do note that blood lord don't force you to be evil, "lawfull good" that want to reform the system from within can also work absolutely fine, it's just that the player will have to accept to let bad things slide pretty much constantly if they want to rise in ranks and be able to actually impact geb politics. Basically, the AP don't work if the players are the kind to attack anyone they see doing bad things in the open, nor does it work with openly rebelious players, but it does fully support those that would want to du "undercover" goodness while presenting an uncaring front. I've read the whole AP and "covert do-gooder" seems absolutely possible and fully supported, and also seems like it would open some pretty interesting roleplay moment, but of course a lot of group just want to play full heroes, not people that have to just look away from evil sometime.

For PF2, its just Strength of Thousands.

Top 5 favorite APs:
1) My own Homebrew campaign setting (I'm biased)
2) Iron Gods (PF1)
3) Wrath of the Righteous (PF1)
4) Strength of Thousands (PF2)
5) Legacy of the Crystal Shard (AD&D 2e)

The rest of my favorites are convoluted enough to not actually have a particular order, or are not D&D related.

It's definitely been good for my group so far. I'm running it right now, and we just got into the second book. If your group likes roleplay and interacting with NPCs in non-stabby ways then I think the AP will be for you. It's also dripping with flavor, which is awesome.

While I haven't read much of it, I might also recommend Blood Lords, particularly if your group likes playing evil, or at least non-good, characters, or are interested in the idea of playing undead. It's got a current of political intrigue running through it, as well.

Blood Lords was probably the right answer to "closest to War for the Crown" but if you're not into that flavor Strength of Thousands is pretty much the opposite.

The recent Gatewalkers is, as the name implies - a road trip adventure. It goes from level 1-10

There will be encounters in forests, cities, small cave complexes, other planets, on the water, in the trees, and more.

It does have you using a few oddball rules from the Dark Archive (Deviant Feats) - but I suspect this will be a lesser impact than all of the kingdom making rules of Kingmaker.

You could probably follow it with the one that is coming out now, that goes level 10 to 20 in the city of Absalom. But we only have the first part of that one out now so we can't say if the other parts will end up in a dungeon complex. However I suspect it will be more wide ranging.

Stolen Fate travels across a ton of the setting.
