What's the purpose of Fatal Aim trait?

Horizon Hunters

I made a post on reddit but I still don't understand what fatal aim does that would be better than using a dedicated one-handed weapon or a dedicated two-handed weapon?

I saw in old posts people saying "Shove, trip and disarm actions", but it makes no difference because after leaving a hand free to perform these skills actions it would have to use an interact action to use the weapon again anyway, regardless of choose it as a one-handed or two-handed weapon this time. And that goes for other things like using a potion or opening a door. As far as I know riding a horse doesn't require a free hand. And I can't shoot or reload while holding other objects (Weapons, shields and I don't know what the others would be).

It's weird for me. Fatal aim at first glance appears to be a type of Two-hand trait, but it is not.

I'm not getting into the discussion of being a weak weapon, because it's not (1d8 dmg with fatal d12 o.o). But I can't understand what the Fatal Aim trait is for with so many restrictions?

It's an ugly habit of mine to look for meaning in everything, but I just can't stop until I find an answer hahaha.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

There are some classes that require a single hand weapon, so for them something like a Jezail has a nice damage dice for a single hand weapon. For instance, a Thaumaturge's Implement's Empowerment. Or they have a need for a free hand often. [like battle medicine]

Now a class with a good to hit, like a fighter or gunslinger can use it 2 handed and get good use out of the fatal trait.

In general the trait isn't for switching back and forth, it's for it to fill 2 different roles with a single weapon.

A drifter that specializes in unarmed attacks can make decent use out of a jezail.

Or free hand weapons: for instance, the Bladed Gauntlet offers Agile, Finesse, Free-Hand, Modular B, P, or S.

Automatons can integrate a Jezail into their arm at level 5, and 2-hand it for Fatal Aim, meaning you can play a PF2 version of Samus Aran. They can also be holstered in a Gunner’s Bandolier if you want to make use of that item.

An inventor can make it with a Modular Head [Modular trait + nonlethal if you want], Integrated Gauntlet [free-hand trait] and Rune Capacity [+1 property rune so you could have Brilliant (greater), Flaming (greater), thundering (greater) and Shocking (greater)]. Oh, and they could two hand it and have a free hand too.
