Ways for alchemist to avoid AoOs?

Advice

Are there any good ways for an alchemist to avoid attacks of opportunity? Foes with good reach and Combat Reflexes can be a real pain when trying to use Fast Bombs!

2 people marked this as a favorite.

The Close-Quarters Thrower makes bombs not provoke, but requires two prereqs. The Sand Bombs discovery can reliably blind opponents. Depending on your GM, the Illusion of Calm extract could prevent provoking with bombs, but that's not strictly RAW.

when they get close use the 'breath weapon bomb' discovery. no aoo.
you might not get to 'throw' more then one but hey, you get everyone in the cone to get full targeted bomb damage (ref for half, unless evasion).

breath weapon bomb:
Breath Weapon Bomb* (Ultimate Combat pg. 24): Instead of drawing the components of, creating, and throwing a bomb, the alchemist can draw the components, drink them, mix them within his body, and then expel them as a breath weapon as a standard action. This breath weapon is a 15-foot cone and has the same DC as the bomb. Each creature within the cone takes damage as if it had suffered a direct hit from the alchemist’s bomb, but succeeding at a Reflex save (DC = 10 + 1/2 the alchemist’s level + the alchemist’s Intelligent modifier) halves the damage. Unlike throwing normal bombs, drawing, drinking, and expelling breath weapon bombs does not provoke attacks of opportunity. An alchemist must be at least 6th level before selecting this discovery.

(and if you have acid bomb and can get a bite attack you might convince your GM that your eligible for the OP noxious bite feat...probably not, hard to use two bomb discoveries at once))

Get a glider of some kind and enchant it with Permanent Fly, like a Flying Broom, except not a broom :P It's hard to get AoO'ed when you're 30ft in the air :)

- Wing discovery and fly around

- Invisibility and Greater invisibility

But with a mutagen (dex and natural AC buff) and Shield spell you should have high AC, and you can have armor too.

Sovereign Court

3 levels of Flying Blade Swashbuckler and stab them every time they make an attempt to attack you?

playing wizards I use Ill of Calm:I1, -Mage Armor:C1-, Shield:A1, Blur:I2, -Blink:T3-, Ablative Barrier:C2-3, Long Arm:T1, and flanked by -Grease:C1-... most of those are on the Alchemist list and the first is what you want.
