I’m surprised by how many have GM’d Serpant’s Skull. For those of you that have, what drew you to it, and how far did you get?

kinda did, because Linnea the Driver's post did make me take the book from the shelf and I'm really tempted to give it another try. Would probably take quite some time to prepare it though, mainly to get rid of some of the things Balacertar mentioned.

Also it would pretty much put a stop to some other things I'm pursuing as of right now and trying to do too many things at once was large part of that GM burnout I mentioned, so I don't want to repeat that.

I really loved the exploration aspect of book 1. I leaned hard into the hex map and my players spent so much time slowly creeping into the wilderness. It helped that 3 of the 4 players are big on survival games.

We were all disappointed with how on the rails the campaign went after that but we did finish. In book 1, we had (maybe) 2 out of a dozen or so sessions where we either cancelled or not everyone showed up. By book 4 we were all "We gotta cancel? Oh bummer." In hindsight, we should've just called it quits but we really wanted to see it through.

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber

I haven't run it, but I liked the concept of Serpent's Skull more than the execution. The last book in particular read like a long series of combat encounters.

I’m surprised the Blood Lords AP didn’t stir up anything for it. I figured the idea of working in Geb would be pretty neat.

Is this a thing? Or is it going to be a thing?!? I love me some Blood Lords, Geb, and Undead in general!

NOW WITH MORE DATA!

I posted this questionnaire first on the Paizo forums, where it received 83 responses. After about a week, I posted it on Reddit, and now there are 152 responses. First of all, I want to report the totals to the two communities, and also examine whether there are any significant differences in the responses. No doubt there are some people (like myself) in both communities.

Here are the new totals, including both communities.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++’

So, one thing that I notice is that the Reddit community is somewhat more focused on 2e than is the Paizo forums community. They’re also far more into Kyonin and Nidal. Reddit likes Age of Ashes more than the Paizo forums.

No conclusions here. Just interesting.

Tarondor, did you post this on the pathfinder_rpg sub, or the 2e sub? I presume the former? If so, that's fascinating.

Skull and shackles is more popular than I guess I would have expected

I am currently running a 2E version of this one

Come to think of it, I don't know.

<checked> Okay, it was the 2e sub. Makes more sense now, I suppose.

I don't spend a lot of time on Reddit. I tried to post the above results there, but the editing was such a nightmare that I gave up. Reddit is better for quick hits rather than anything in depth.

For what it's worth, Age of Ashes -is- far better than its reputation. I am enjoying GMing and I believe my players would agree.

Seconded

That said.. .there ARE a couple encounters that are brutal in it.

Agreed. I thought that the initial Book was perfect for introducing us to PF2e. They definitely take the training wheels off after that though...lol.

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber

Oh yeah. I had near TPK's in Books 1, 2 and 4 so far. And the PC's were forced to retreat at least twice in Book 3. It's certainly -tough-, but not imbalanced.

I would say that the only part of the AP (so far) that deserves a warning sign is the end of Book 2.

Spoiler:
Cripes, that giant alligator nearly killed everyone in the party. Follow that up with the stone golem and I had to quell a minor riot. But you'd better believe they fell back and returned loaded for bear!

This thread has put me in the mood to write "Tarondor's Guide to Pathfinder Adventure Paths." I was thinking of discussing each AP and noting various criticisms, praise and cool stuff I found on the Internet as well as my own observations and suggestions.

Whaddya think?

I've only ever played a little of Skull & Shackles. I would like to try GMing Abomination Vaults. That would be my second attempt at GMing, if the world ever goes back to normal. I would love to play in any AP, but I prefer 2e.

I was browsing the Paizo boards, looked up at my TV, then looked down at my phone again to notice this thread was on my screen. I guess my finger hit a link to open it. Weird.

Well, what else could I do?

Personally, Age of Ashes (along with the disappointing playtest) is what put me off 2e entirely. An exploration of Hermea and the surrounding potential plotlines is something I've hoped for for years.

The abjectly squandered potential of the AP in that regard is staggering.

Lanathar wrote:

It's because the concept is very cool. Be pirates, do pirate things.

Unfortunately the AP takes a severe dip in the amount of pirate things you actually get to do starting with book 4 (which is mostly just a dungeon crawl), at which point my players slowly lost interest playing and I also lost interest running it. We petered out partway through book 5.

Would've ended things after the Free Captain's Regatta if I knew how the rest of the AP was going to be received, it would have been a very high place to end the campaign.

Hey, PW!

Right now, its author is wondering whether this will be the guide that finally gets him strung up for his pernicious opinions!

Actually, I'm surprised to see that there is a lot of agreement between my rankings and those suggested by the poll. Not completely, but substantially. I liked Iron Gods better than the poll did, but that's about the only standout.

The devil in the details is in saying something useful to the reader. We'll see how it turns out.

Wow! In typical Tarondor fashion, that is a literary work of art that will take some time to delve into. I look forward to it!

I love how in-depth your guides are, my friend. :)
