Do thrown weapons use strength for attack rolls

Rules Discussion

Hello all,

So I can't find a definite answer to this anywhere. I can find multiple traits about what feats work and don't work, but not the basic.

Do I use my dex or my strength when I'm throwing a hatchet club or light hammer ?

They are ranged weapons when you throw them so you use dex.

You throw the weapon as a ranged attack, it's a ranged weapon when thrown.

Ranged weapon attacks use Dex to hit.

You can throw this weapon as a ranged attack, and it is a ranged weapon when thrown. A thrown weapon adds your Strength modifier to damage just like a melee weapon does. When this trait appears on a melee weapon, it also includes the range increment. Ranged weapons with this trait use the range increment specified in the weapon’s Range entry.

When you use a Strike action or make a spell attack, you attempt a check called an attack roll. Attack rolls take a variety of forms and are often highly variable based on the weapon you are using for the attack, but there are three main types: melee attack rolls, ranged attack rolls, and spell attack rolls. Spell attack rolls work a little bit differently, so they are explained separately on the next page.

Ranged attack rolls use Dexterity as their ability modifier.

Thrown weapons apply Dexterity to ranged attack rolls and Strength to damage rolls.

The trait on a weapon that will give you Strength to attack rolls with ranged weapons is Brutal
Of course there are zero of these.

Well its just for a few monsters like Cave Giant... not for PCs at this time.

dex to attack

Ok ok, seems pretty clear cut, I thought that was the case but foundry didn't do it as such and I thought I was maybe mistaken.

Evidently I was not.

I had a who's on first moment LOL. I initially thought you were commenting on the power level of a trait that would add STR to attack. Then realized that the name of the trait is literally 'Brutal'.

I don't know ("Third base."), I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes retro at some point... Or a variation using another sport becomes popular in the future.

After all, the sketch was based on similar word-play performances.
