quick question about adding enhancements to weapon

Rules Questions

I'm currently playing a 13th level magus who has craft arms and armor as a feat. If I want to add spell storing to my rapier, can I do that for free? I meet the prerequisites (craft magic arms and armor; at least a 12th level caster), but it seems odd not to pay. Of course, I can't pay myself. And it seems from the requirements below that I can add the enhancement. Or does "special creator" signify something? Any advice will be welcome!

Spell Storing

Price +1 bonus; Aura strong evocation and varies; CL 12th; Weight —

DESCRIPTION

A spell storing weapon allows a spellcaster to store a single targeted spell of up to 3rd level in the weapon. (The spell must have a casting time of 1 standard action.) Anytime the weapon strikes a creature and the creature takes damage from it, the weapon can immediately cast the spell on that creature as a free action if the wielder desires. (This special ability is an exception to the general rule that casting a spell from an item takes at least as long as casting that spell normally.) Once the spell has been cast from the weapon, a spellcaster can cast any other targeted spell of up to 3rd level into it. The weapon magically imparts to the wielder the name of the spell currently stored within it. A randomly rolled spell storing weapon has a 50% chance of having a spell stored in it already. This special ability can only be placed on melee weapons.

A spell storing weapon emits a strong aura of the evocation school, plus the aura of the spell currently stored.

CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENTS

Craft Magic Arms and Armor; Special creator must be a caster of at least 12th level; Cost +1 bonus

Can you explain why you think it should be free?

What is special is that there is actually a spellcaster level requirement, which is somewhat unusual. That's it.

For what it's worth that "special" is not in the actual book, or at least not my printing or on AoN. I'll assume there was either bolding (I see the pfsrd has that) or a colon you missed.

No reason for it to be free though : it's just a regular weapon enhancement and none of those are free either.

Short version is it costs half as much to do it yourself with the craft feat as it would to have a vendor do it (which is the difference in cost between current item and upgraded item).

I'm guessing because there is no actual 'gold' cost listed in the crafting section, which is a side-effect of the 'equivalent to a +1 enhancement bonus' price.

OP, the default cost is half the 'price', so the cost will for this enchant will vary depending on how enchanted your weapon already is (see 'Table 15-8: Weapons' in the CRB):

  • Adding to a +1 weapon is an additional 6,000g (going from a 2k +1 weapons to a 8k +2 weapon) price, so crafting it yourself will cost you 3,000g.
  • Adding to a +2 weapon is an additional 10,000g (going from 8k to 18k) price, or 5,000g to craft,
  • Adding to a +3 weapon is an additional 14,000g (going from 18k to 32k) price, or 7,000g to craft,
  • Etc, etc...
The 'cost' only really needs to be included for items where a large part of the cost isn't helped by crafting (like the Tome of Clear Thought where the vast majority of the cost is the material component for the wish spell and therefore not discounted) but is generally included for clarity: Unfortunately, dynamic 'enchancement bonus' pricing make it so they can't list a simple cost for most weapon and armor enchantments...

Got it. Thanks, everyone. Usually it lists the half-price cost, and since it didn't in this case, I just wondered if it was something that didn't apply. Getting it for free seems wrong anyway. I have a keen +3 rapier, so it sounds like adding spell storing would be a +5 enhancement cost at half-price.

Yep, it would be the cost of a +5 weapon (50k/2 = 25k) minus the cost of your existing +4 weapon (32k/2 = 16k) or 9,000g (and 18 days of work) to craft yourself...

In my experience, getting the necessary downtime is the 'hard part' of crafting, but your mileage may vary...

half price of the difference between the current +4 and the completed +5, which i think is (50000 - 32000) / 2 = 9000.
