In need of a Kobold Sorcerer build for Ages of Ashes AP.

Advice

Grand Lodge

So, a few players have dropped from my local group's Age of Ashes AP and another is unsatisfied with his character. We're at the end of book 2- so a good time to bring in some new characters.
Currently the party is Barbarian/Druid, Rogue/Wizard, Druid, Ranger, Cleric, & Bard. The ranger and bard players have dropped out, and the rogue/wizard wants to play a cleric. I'm playing the cleric, and he's little more than a healbot. So, i've no complaints trying a new build.
So, to go along with with new Cleric, who's a lizardfolk who worships Apsu- i'm having the idea of building a Kobold Sorcerer to accompany him; but with some quirks...

I'm debating between the Genie/Efreeti bloodline and play it off as he believes he is a red dragon descendant; or Shadow bloodline and play it off as him being a "shadow dragon" descendant.
Another issue im having is wrapping my head around heightened spells and how sorcerer gain new spells and their 'signature' spells allotment . So, trying to build a spell list, for a 8th lvl character- especially from scratch... ya, i had a time trying to set up daily spells for my cleric with the heighten shenanigans.

so, looking for advice on possible builds for a 8th kobold sorcerer. Genie bloodline gives me arcane spells, Shadow give me Occult spells... i could attempt to go control/debuff with Shadow bloodline.

Thanks.

I'm not a huge fan of either bloodline, but I'd go with Genie since elemental stuff is a much better fit for a Kobold than shadow stuff.

You could go with the Ifrit heritage, but I think that would probably be too obviously non-draconic. Spell-Scale for an innate Produce Flame sems like a better fit.

For Ancestry feats, I'd go dragon all the way. Kobold Breath plus upgrade, both Dracomancer feats and Dragonblood Paragon. Dracomancer with a Red Draconic Exemplar can give you some interesting spells like True Strike, See Invisibility, Mind Reading and Crushing Despair. All of those are perfectly ambiguous in their source and it's up to you to decide, if those are actual dragon powers or just another manifestaton of your Bloodline.

For class feats, I'd probably take a close look at Ancestral Mage to mix your "draconic" magic into your repertoire. Not sure that's actually a powerful thing to do but at least it's fitting for your concept. Doesn't hurt that you're only 2 levels away from it. Beyond that, nothing stands out as particularly useful for your concept so just pick whatevery you want. I'd maybe avoid Crossblooded for this character since both Dragons and Genies use Arcane Magic. If you feel like your Kobold might see himself as blessed by Apsu or sothing, you could use the feat to get some Divine spells going, of course.

Providing hints for a repertoire is tricky, especially for Arcane with its large number of spells. The spells granted by the Efreeti Bloodline are a bit on the weak side on average. At least for my playstyle. YMMV, of course.

For a "general purpose" repertoire, I'd try something like the following. You might want to adjust stuff to fit your own playstyle and character concept better.

0- detect magic, electric arc, ray of frost, shield, message, read aura
1- illusory disguise, magic missile (S), grease, illusory object
2- enlarge, glitterdust, hideous laughter, illusory creature (S)
3- enthrall, slow, fireball or lightning bolt (S), invisibility sphere
4- creation, dimension door (S), evervation, resilient sphere

Has a few forms of attacks, some debuffs and some utility. Lacks defensive spells, but I personally find I nearly never use those. You're also starting at level 8 so getting a wand of mirror image or a few mistform elixiers shouldn't be hard.

I personally would go with the Ifrit heritage and Genie bloodline, it matches your character concept and open you to ancestry feats like Charred Remains.

Reach spell, Arcane Evolution and Crossblood Evolution are the generic really good feats.

For spells remember that you can have a staff and how they work for spontaneous casters.

But not considering a staff this is something that I would use.

4th Phantasmal Killer (Signature), Resilient Sphere, Dimension Door, Creation

3rd Slow, Fireball (Signature), Invisibility Sphere, Enthrall

2nd Hideous Laughter, Blood Vendetta (Signature), Mirror Image, Enlarge

1st Jump, Illusory Object (Signature), Grease, Illusory Disguise

Cantrips Shield, Electric Arc, Ray of Frost, Prestidigitation, Detect Magic

im curious as to why you both recommended Illusory Object/Disguise into my spell list.

personally, i feel like going down the whole "draconic" route is too cliched, hence i avoided the draconic bloodline. Genie bloodline adds a bit of humor to the character.

You get Disguise from the Bloodline. I wouldn't pick it otherwise.

As for Illusory Object, it's just too versatile to not pick up.

I recently used it to conjure up a wall in front of the exit of a dining hall in an attempt to delay a fleeing assassin. Admittedly, that didn't work out because he had already run through the exit I just hadn't spotted him, despite knowing he was somewhere in the hall.

I've also used it to "create" some furniture out of thin air while infiltrating a place when a patrol was about to spot us. Nothing says you can't be hidden inside of your own illusions.

The ruler of a nation was talking to us in private and didn't dare to mention his secret service, not knowing we had already encountered them and were their allies. I held my hands before my breast and just for an instant used the spell to create their symbol between them. The ruler knew we were in the know and finally talked more freely to us.

We found a strange crystal deep within a mine and when we reported that to some nearby Deep Gnomes, their leader wanted to know exactly how it looked like. Our druid kept talking and talking about the color, size, form, number of edges and so on. After about 2 minutes I had enough and just showed the leader an Illusory Object copy of the thing.

So yeah, the spell is great. It's only limitation is your creativity.

I'll note as someone who has GM'd it 2 books so far, I would be very cautious with fire damage.

I've seen so much immunity so far, but maybe that gets better in the next books
