Getting the most out of Spring Attack

Rules Questions

There are at least three means of getting more than one attack while spring attacking

Improved Spring Attack/Greater Spring Attack
Spring Heeled Reaper
Swashbuckler Deed: Swift Strikes (lvl 11 Courser Archetype)

So by lvl 16 (when you can take greater spring attack), you could attack 5 different targets.

Spring Attack.

Improved Spring Attack.

Greater Spring Attack.

Spring Heeled Reaper.

Swashbuckler Deed: Swift Strikes.

The wording of the deed and style feet are a little odd, but I think that this would be legal. Anyone disagreed?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

None of them stack, they each allow you to attack a set amount of creatures when spring attacking. You only gain the benefits of one at any given time.

Yeah, they don't stack. But IMO it's not the point of Spring Attack to deal a lot of damage - it's rather a mobile defense where your targets don't get to make full-attacks either. Which buys the rest of the party some time to do something.

you might want to look at the whirling dervish swashbuckler.

at 7th level he gains the following deed:

"Whirlwind Dance (Ex): At 7th level, a whirling dervish can sweep through her opponents’ lines like a cyclone. As a fullround action, she can spend 1 panache point to move up to her speed. She can make attacks against creatures with her reach during this movement, up to the number of attacks she’s entitled to with a full attack. Each attack is made at her highest attack bonus, and must target a different creature. This movement provokes attacks of opportunity as normal. This deed replaces superior feint and targeted strike."

also the spells 'bladed dash' and it's greater version (on same page, below the first)

I find disturbing how Improved and Grater Spring Attack don't require to have iterative attacks. With the right animal companion, you can give it Improved Spring Attack and some serious wallop. The main problem is that the BAB of AC si relatively low.

well they do have bab +9(improved) and +16(greater) requirement. and animal companion is maxed at level 20 character to +12 bab so no greater spring attack (normaly)

I know, that is why I did say "Improved". Pounce is still way more powerful, it is only that I find that it is an oversight not to require the ability to do iterative attacks. Or state that giving a second attack to animals with only one is "working as intended".

Animal companions can go to level 21, character level +1; but that still isn't sufficient.

Any animal companion that qualifies for Improved Spring Attack either has multiple natural weapons, or gained a bonus attack at a -5 penalty at 9th level (that's when it gets BAB+6) from the Multiattack ability. It's not technically an iterative attack, but it works pretty much the same, so what you're asking for is already there.

Unless they have a companion archetype that removes multiattack
