How does Magic Missile work with the Magus class?

If a Magus uses Spell Strike to embue a melee attack with Magic Missile do all of the missiles have to hit the target of the melee strike or is the Magus still able to choose who each missile hits?

I'm using the playtest version in a campaign right now So I would like peoples input on it now based on the playtest and then when the final version comes out if it is more clear then I can revise my character.

Sure, but asking here isn't going to help either. This forum is about actual rules that are actually out, not playtest rules.

OP should just collaborate with the GM/player until the book comes out with clearer rules. I assume the real Magus will look a lot more different from the playtest version.

As of the playtest version, using Magic Missile with spellstrike does nothing except give your magic missile a chance to fail if you can't land strikes. There's literally no point in combining them.

As for OP's specific question, striking spell clearly says only the target you hit is affected by the spell, so no choosing separate targets.


The correct spell for the playtest magus is message so you can get your free temp hp every round along with your maul attacks. ;)

Squiggit has the right of the play test striking spell ability. You have to target the person you melee attack. It is a spell that can be cast for one action with striking spell, but the trade off is that you get no benefit to the spell, even if you crit.

*shrug* Squggit gave the official answer. To the others... Well, it's a question so late they closed the appropriate thread for it. Secondly, I truly did find the message to be the spell to cast: it targets a foe so it activates the temp hp riders while allowing 2 actions to attack with a large weapon and/or move. It was the only satisfying setup I found. It might be helpful or not, who knows.

The playtest rules are subject to change. There's no reason to continue discussion of these classes until the official rules are released. Imagine if someone answered with something that was technically correct but was changed when the actual rules were release, then someone comes and finds this thread and claims it's the correct rule?

It just muddies the water when we discuss playtest rules in the main rules forum.
