With weapon inventor, they can pick their invention from a list of weapons as the base. I should be able to do the same thing for armor as a base and then that base is modified with innovation breakthroughs.
We should be able to wear light armor and play more of a rogue like inventor if we so choose. Let's leave it as open ended as possible for our imaginations to run wild.
Plus, it's not like having half plate or full plate at level 1 will break the game at all.. especially since fighters and paladins are able to start off with it practically.

Maybe as an upgrade limited to a light armor - you no longer count as wearing armor. Something in the second tier?
If we accept the idea of allowing inventors to pick the stats of their armor, all this essentially does is add the comfort trait and a line about how your armor can be spotted on a causal inspection. This actually isn't THAT strong of an ability; level 1 seems appropriate for how niche the benefits really are

It also enables a number of (mostly monk) abilities that require being unarmored, though. Although yeah, still not actually that powerful, as outside monk stuff most "must be unarmored" things are giving item bonuses to defense, and those don't stack.
