CATFOLK WEAPON FAMILIARITY

Rules Discussion

You favor weapons that you can use with quick, darting slashes like a cat’s claws. You are trained with the hatchet, kama, kukri, scimitar, and sickle. In addition, you gain access to kama, kukris, and all uncommon catfolk weapons. For you, martial catfolk weapons are simple weapons and advanced catfolk weapons are martial weapons.

Is the last sentence a typo or is this intended to be different then all the other Ancestry Weapon Familiarity feats?

This wording can be interpreted differently and looks like it could pair with other feats like Deific Weapon of the Champion.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

This sounds actually interesting but I think it's most likely to be an oversight of just not completely carrying over what was written for the other weapon familarities

Funnily enough, this isn't new. Here is Unconventional Weapon, a human ancestry feat:

Unconventional Weapon wrote:

You’ve familiarized yourself with a particular weapon, potentially from another ancestry or culture. Choose an uncommon simple or martial weapon with a trait corresponding to an ancestry (such as dwarf, goblin, or orc) or that is common in another culture. You gain access to that weapon, and for the purpose of determining your proficiency, that weapon is a simple weapon.

If you are trained in all martial weapons, you can choose an uncommon advanced weapon with such a trait. You gain access to that weapon, and for the purpose of determining your proficiency, that weapon is a martial weapon.

The fun bit with this is that humans can choose Katanas, and therefore Ruffian racket Rogues can sneak attack with katanas.

I totally wasn't thinking about doing this exact setup. Nope, not at all.

(Also nunchakus)

It is different in that the old feats say “for the purpose of determining proficiency”

I would assume the catfolk feat is an error and will be corrected in the first errata drop.

Only 1-handed, otherwise it breaks the 1d8 rule.

Though that's still a great catch and a solid 1H weapon.
Also, against creatures immune to precision or when you can't get a flank (et al), switching to 1d10 makes a major difference.
Hmm.

ETA:
Oh wait. Nope.
It's not a simple weapon except to determine one's proficiency.
It's still a martial weapon in terms of Sneak Attack (et al).
So it could work to pick up a katana to use as a normal 1d10 weapon, which might balance well if one has an unarmed strike for Sneak Attack, ninja style.

It's the same as halfling...

In addition, you gain access to all uncommon halfling weapons. For you, martial halfling weapons are simple weapons, and advanced halfling weapons are martial weapons.

Yeah, I don't think it's a typo but we definitely have several of these types of feats for different races that aren't consistent in what they do. I think that's probably not intended.
