Is there a list of all the stealthy and / or detectivey classes (including archetypes and prestige classes)?

Advice

I know that this could mainly be done with roleplay, but there are several classes that also mechanically support this type of character.

These are the ones I know of:

Rogue (chained and unchained)
Ninja
Slayer
Vigilante (Stalker specialization)
Investigator

Prestige:
Assassin
Master Spy
Sleepless Detective

Any others? I haven’t looked through archetypes much for stealthy and/or detectivey abilities, and haven’t looked through every prestige class yet either.

Any help would be appreciated, as I’d like to know all of my options ahead of time for an NPC I’m making.

I mean.... any character that's good at stealth and perception could be what you're looking for mechanically. Just pick up a trait that gives you the missing skill(s) that the class doesn't give you. If you're short on skill points you could either be a human or take the feat cunning.

What abilities are you looking for?

Trapfinding?
Sneak attack?
Tracking?

It's hard to answer your question without knowing what you're actually looking for.

I mean, if you're looking for sneak attack all of the following get it

Spoiler:
Base Classes
Alchemist(vivisectionist)
Magus(greensting slayer)
Monk(monk of the mantis)

Inquisitor(Sanctified slayer)
Druid/Cleric/Inquisitor (Crocodile domain)
Warpriest (Cult Leader)
Warpriest (Mantis Zealot)

Fighter (Venom Blade)
Ranger (Poison Darter)
Gunslinger (Bushwhacker)

Prestige Classes

If it's trapfinding you're looking for all of the following can get it

An aether kineticist (telekineticist) makes a fine sneaky character.

The veiled illusionist PrC turns any of several full casters into sneaky types; you wouldn't usually think of a cleric as an option.

Several oracle mysteries do sneaky/detective, notably intrigue, shadow or streets; that last can get a form of sneak attack LK.

Almost any medium (and prowler at world's end bloodragers!) can channel the trickster spirit.

Spiritualists have an incorporeal spy, as does the shadowdancer PrC. Summoners can have a very sneaky eidolon.

Inquisitors have invisibility and social spells on their spell list, and class features/inquisitions which can work with those.

Secret broker occultists are all about secrets, hiding them and finding them.

Rangers can totally be sneaky and gather info.

The owl style feat line can make any feat-rich full BAB character sneaky. Yes that does mean fighters.

I'm sure there's more. All the stealth/detective options? Narrow it down some first or you'll be forever looking through them all.

Investigator (particularly Empiricist) sits as king of the stealthy detectives and king of the skill based classes with its only real rival being Phantom Thief. Even then an investigator's alchemy options catapult it head and shoulders above non casting classes.

Alright, the NPC is meant to be like Batman, specifically in regards to detective/stealth skills, not the actual combat. I want him not to be found out by the players, for as long as possible. I actually like the idea of giving him multiple personality disorder, 9 personalities, one for each alignment, as there has pretty much been a Batman for every alignment.

I'm currently looking through the suggestions right now. Thank you all for the help.

Vigilante without a doubt. depending on which version of batman you can waffle between avenger or stalker. If you dont want him to be found out by the players its hard to beat the disguise bonuses of the vigilante class. They can use their social talents to develop other personas as well.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

If not being found out by the players is the number one priority then cipher investigator is really good. Its inattention blindness isn't good enough to use on its own, but it makes a great backup to stealth and invisibility (think layered defences, only vs detection not vs attacks).

If not for the batman angle I would've said "Wizard." They pretty much do everything anyway...
