What is a check?

Rules Questions

Ok, Grippli FCB for a medium :

"Medium (Blood of the Beast pg. 8): Add 1/4 to any checks modified by the medium’s spirit surge ability."

Spirit Bonus: When you channel a champion, your spirit bonus applies on attack rolls, non-spell damage rolls, Strength checks, Strength-based skill checks, and Fortitude saves.

A non-spell damage roll is not check. Strength Checks and Strength-based skill checks are clearly checks. However, is a Fortitude save a check? How about an attack roll?

I think this THREAD establishes that an attack roll is not an ability check. But I found no clear definition of what a generic check is on AONPRD.

Check: A check is a d20 roll which may or may not be modified by another value. The most common types are attack rolls, skill checks, ability checks, and saving throws.

Also the bonus you're quoting is applied to Spirit Surge, which technically is not the same as Spirit Bonus. Though I can understand why you'd quote spirit bonus here. Just OP decided not to quote Spirit Surge here to complete the picture though its kind of important.

But as printed anything you can apply Spirit Surge to would qualify for the Grippli's FCB bonus.

Not just something you can apply a spirit bonus or spirit surge to, something that you actually did choose to apply one of your limited uses of spirit surge to.

After failing a d20 roll that was modified by his spirit bonus, a medium can allow his spirit to gain 1 additional point of influence over him in order to add 1d6 to the check’s result without taking an action. This can cause the check to succeed instead of fail. The medium must be conscious and aware to use this ability, and he can use this ability at most once per round. At 10th level, the medium’s spirit surge die increases to 1d8, and at 20th level it increases to 1d10.

And yes when channeling a champion spirit that applies to attack rolls and fortitude saves.

All, thank you for your replies.

In particular, AVR, thank you for this, I have been misreading that as any check that could be modified, rather than is modified, with Spirit Surge; that does make this a lot less crazy.
