I suppose you can joke or be dismissive if you want, but at the end of the day if you call a company out publicly, but fail to hold yourself to the same ideal then you are going to be taken seriously by a much smaller pool. Of course if your intent is just to "throw shade" then you have accomplished your goal. If, OTOH, you actually want to apply pressure on the company to change its practices, you are losing at least some measure of support which could be quite significant depending on the subject matter and the seriousness of the conditions.

I'm all in favor of Paizo taking their printing efforts back to a western country for a number of reasons, not limited to the human rights problems in China, but for right/wrong I am not prepared to stop buying their product nor anyone else's as a result. That could mean I don't have the courage of my convictions, but I'm not calling them out so no hypocrisy here.

That's not to say you must completely disengage with every instance of a company profiting from human rights abuses, but there is plenty of low-hanging fruit, especially when the product is a luxury item as opposed to a need.

Just to be clear: We've decided it's okay that Paizo uses printers based in China despite their human rights record because the guy with the bag icon shops at Wal-Mart?

^ No.
But let's try break it down as simply as possible?

* General consensus - It's ok to buy Paizo's products (books, pdfs, etc.)

* Reality - Paizo's books are printed in China.

* Realisation - Although it has always been there, human rights issues resulting from the government of China have come to the fore over the last nine months or so.

* View of some (now) - It's unreasonable to expect Paizo to change where they print their books post haste particularly in the current economic climate.

* Hope of some (then & now) - Perhaps Paizo could consider alternative places to print their books, especially if things worsen in China (regardless of how speculative this may be).

* Gripes of a few - Let's throw shade at the OP of this thread even though it was posted nine months ago & has gone through a couple of cycles or so with the moderators already.

Did I miss any salient points?

Carry on, I suppose...

Paizo staff have repeatedly asked us not to engage with such posters. Instead, flag the offensive post and move on to other things.

When you engage, it creates more cleanup work for staff (close the thread, evaluate all the posts in the conversation, flagged or not, decide what to delete and what to leave up, comment on what they had to removed, reopen the post).

Thread derails for interpersonal conflict reasons don't help Paizo staff, don't make the thread more readable, and only make one look heroic for fighting back for the few hours before staff gets around to deleting them. And it unnecessarily degrades the customer service experience for other people who are trying to get their items shipped, their PDFs to download, and their payments made correctly.

Far better to follow staff advice: flag and move on.
