Changing Positions on the Organized Play Team

Paizo Employee 4/5 Organized Play Lead Developer

When I explain organized play to new folks, I often emphasize just how versatile the programs are, allowing anyone embrace the schedule that works for them. It’s the ability to play as often as they like, to take their rewarding experiences with them to the next game, and to step back when the time is right. After nearly a decade of service—as an enthusiast, a volunteer, and an organized play lead developer—I’ve determined the time is right to sign my last figurative Chronicle sheet and begin a new adventure.

I signed the official paperwork last week, formally changing my role from Organized Play Lead Developer to that of Senior Developer on the Starfinder team. In that capacity, I’ll be working on a variety of products that include the upcoming hardcover books and all sorts of other wild projects (some yet to be announced, and untold numbers yet to be pitched). I’ll be with the team for several more weeks to ensure a smooth transition and help out with any post-Gen Con tasks before formally transitioning to the Starfinder team. And once that happens, let’s not assume my Pathfinder or organized play days are over; I’ll be helping out intermittently with planning society storylines and upcoming Pathfinder products, there are no doubt many products I’ll tackle as an author rather than as a developer, and I have many organized play tables to GM.

But as I step away, I am confident that there are even greater days ahead for Paizo’s organized play programs—not only for the dedicated volunteer corps and great adventures ahead, but also for the incredible teammates I’ve worked with for much of my tenure. Linda, Michael, Thurston, and Tonya.

Linda Zayas-Palmer has been working with me on the campaign for more than four years, and in the past two years she has shown ever greater initiative and innovation (taking on not only the most recent Pathfinder Society multi-table interactive specials, but also heading the Pathfinder Adventure Card Society). She’s poised to take all three campaigns to bold new places with both enthusiasm and experience, having received a promotion to organized play lead developer.

It’s been a wild ride! Now let’s get ready to explore, report, and cooperate for many years to come.

Congratulations to you both and I hope you enjoy your new tasks!

(I have to say, moving to the left coast really has worked out for Linda and Mark. Do the thing you love and you never 'work' a day in your life, indeed!)

Wow, sounds like there will be great things to come for both Starfinder and Org Play! Looking forwards to seeing what the future brings and wishing you both the best in the new roles! :D

Wow this was certainly unexpected!

But I look forward to seeing the mark you leave on Starfinder!

I am really torn here.
It is sad to see you go, but I am looking forward to wonderful things you will do for Starfinder.

And Linda is worthy successor although now I totally expect an invasion of Leshys.

Exciting times ahead of Starfinder with you in there. Linda's got some big shoes to fill, but the work she's done for PFS makes me think she's absolutely the right choice as a successor.

Congratulations, John! Such an epic decade of story... thank you for everything you've done to give all of us the ability to play in this awesome campaign. We'll miss you, even though you're still around.

And congratulations, Linda! I'm looking forward to the future for PFS under your leadership. Best of luck!

Sad to see you leaving as Lead Developer overseeing Organized Play, but happy not only for your new role within the company but also with the choice of your successor. Congratulations to both you and Linda!

Sad to hear you're moving on, but when I started reading this I was thinking "I hope Linda's stepping into the role"... so I was cheered up by the end. Was curious who'd end up stepping up for starfinder.

Thanks for the amazing years of PFS, and I don't think you guys could've picked a better person to continue the campaign forwards.

I for one welcome our new Leshy overlords!

I know you have left us in very capable hands and we can look forward to the great things you have planned for starfinder!

Looking forward to having you join us in Omaha at Nuke-Con during the first week of October.

Linda is awesome and will be a great leader. I look forward to working with you in your new role, John, and seeing all that you create!

Hmm

Silver Crusade 5/5

Thanks for everything you’ve done for all of us in PFS, and I’m looking forward to seeing your contributions to the Starfinder team! You’ve always been an incredibly positive presence and that will definitely be missed.

That being said, I’m definitely excited to see what Linda brings as OP Lead Developer!

Liberty's Edge 4/5

Is there plans to hire someone to take Linda's old position?

A shame to see John move slightly away from org play, but I am happy for all the Starfinder players (including myself) and Linda is certainly up for the challenge^^

There’s a vacancy on the organized play team, and there will likely be a bit of shuffling in the responsibilities and exact roles. I believe that Adam Daigle (managing developer) has already put out feelers for possible candidates and started preliminary hiring work. In the meantime, I’ll be helping out with assorted business and transition processes until I jump over to Starfinder on August 19th.

Congrats John, after playing at tables where you GM or were a player, my wife and I look forward to seeing the development that comes out for Starfinder. She absolutely loved it when you GM'd and allowed her halfling character use an externally ship mounted gun to wipe away some Jinsuls.

And congrats to Linda.

Paizo Employee 4/5 ** Developer

I never considered Pathfinder Society without John's presence, but I'm not trying to say Lynda isn't a great fit too! I'm excited to see what the changes will mean for the campaign, as I'm sure the shake-up with invigorate both teams with new ideas and energy!
