Now that Dino Fort is semi-officially in the game, let's discuss. ;)

It's as primal as it gets, I think. And I am intrigued by the duration extension mechanic. It is "concentration" for the longer term. For short duration spells you have to sacrifice actions, for this spell slots. I can live with more spells using that. Undead controlling would be a candidate.

As for cheese: Can the TRexes leave the fort? Is this the "Summon Mounts " spell for a party where everyone has the unannounced "Dino Rider" feat? :)

Dinosaur fort is the best thing that has ever happened to RPGs.

I do believe there are two very important lines in it - one is the Traditions line, where a spell is now specified as belonging to one or more magical traditions in its description. Yes, it means any further magical traditions would be harder to implement. Don't care. We need some form of clarity.
The other is the spell extension mechanic. I would love for more spells to work this way, and possibly longterm rituals too. Magic is way too prevalent in worldbuilding for the removal of Permanence to have no consequences. We need long term teleportation circles, portals, illusions, or summons, and this is a mildly elegant and very effective way to do it.

Of course I'm out sick when my baby gets adopted!

Dinosaur Fort Spell 10
Conjuration
Traditions primal
Cast 10 minutes (material, somatic, verbal)
Range 500 feet
Duration 24 hours (see text)

You conjure a primeval fort with walls of sharpened wood adorned with dinosaur skin and teeth, up to 300 feet on a side. Each of the four quadrants of the fort is guarded by a tyrannosaurus (see Bestiary). While the tyrannosauruses won’t cross into the others’ territories, their reach allows them to simultaneously attack an intruder near the center of the fort. The tyrannosauruses leave you and anyone you introduce to them alone but treat anyone else they find in the fort as intruders and prospective snacks. When you prepare spells, you can choose not to recover the spell slot you used to cast this spell. If you do, the fort remains for another 24 hours.

The fort must be created on a plot of land free of other structures. It adapts to the natural terrain, adopting the structural requirements for being built there. The fort adjusts around small features such as ponds or spires of rock, but can’t be created on water or other nonsolid surfaces. If created on snow, sand dunes, or other soft surfaces with a solid surface underneath, the foundation reaches the solid ground. If created on a solid but unstable surface, such as a swamp or an area plagued by tremors, there’s a 10% chance each day the fort begins to sink or collapse.

The fort doesn’t harm creatures within the area when it appears, and it can’t be created within a crowd or in a densely populated area. Any creature inadvertently caught inside the fort when the spell is cast ends up unharmed inside the complete fort and always has a clear path of escape.

It IS Christmas after all!

With a 500' range, the cheese is to cast it so that a 1'x1' fort appears in the middle of a populated area.

Yeah, I'd dig it if duration extension mechanics like this worked for me stuff. Dominate and Charm spring to mind. Being able to keep those spells going opens up the stories we used to have, but requiring a daily sacrifice of a spell slot keeps them from being abused too much.

Okay, let's discuss:

Dino Fort is officially the best spell ever printed.

:D

False. Second best. The best thing is still the Aspect of the Corgi for the Shifter.

The developers already thought of that one.

I genuinely hope that they take the extension mechanic for this spell and use it for other spells. It's simple, elegant, and provides a key balancing mechanic. It's also quite potent for story telling. I'm already imagining high level wizards or priests who no longer adventure and rarely cast magic due to dedicating tons of spell slots to support magical barriers to hold back powerful monsters.

I was figuring a spell that summoned a fortified dinosaur, so big that you could use the dino itself as a movable fort.
But the spell as portrayed is still amusing.
