The joke here being that the clueless literature professor thought a sailor needed to know about land mammals and holes in the ground...

It's not that odd.

I am the very model of a modern Major-General,
I've information vegetable, animal, and mineral,
I know the kings of England, and I quote the fights historical
From Marathon to Waterloo, in order categorical;
I'm very well acquainted, too, with matters mathematical,
I understand equations, both the simple and quadratical,
About binomial theorem I'm teeming with a lot o' news,
With many cheerful facts about the square of the hypotenuse.

I'm very good at integral and differential calculus;
I know the scientific names of beings animalculous:
In short, in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral,
I am the very model of a modern Major-General.

I know our mythic history, King Arthur's and Sir Caradoc's;
I answer hard acrostics, I've a pretty taste for paradox,
I quote in elegiacs all the crimes of Heliogabalus,
In conics I can floor peculiarities parabolous;
I can tell undoubted Raphaels from Gerard Dows and Zoffanies,
I know the croaking chorus from The Frogs of Aristophanes!
Then I can hum a fugue of which I've heard the music's din afore,
And whistle all the airs from that infernal nonsense Pinafore.

Then I can write a washing bill in Babylonic cuneiform,
And tell you ev'ry detail of Caractacus's uniform:
In short, in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral,
I am the very model of a modern Major-General.

In fact, when I know what is meant by "mamelon" and "ravelin",
When I can tell at sight a Mauser rifle from a javelin,
When such affairs as sorties and surprises I'm more wary at,
And when I know precisely what is meant by "commissariat",
When I have learnt what progress has been made in modern gunnery,
When I know more of tactics than a novice in a nunnery –
In short, when I've a smattering of elemental strategy –
You'll say a better Major-General has never sat a gee.

For my military knowledge, though I'm plucky and adventury,
Has only been brought down to the beginning of the century;
But still, in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral,
I am the very model of a modern Major-General.

I did more of that from memory than I care to admit

I sang more of that from memory than I realized I still knew.

Howdy, y'all! How you'ns doin'? (Sorry, sometimes my Arkansas roots poke out of the carefully cultivated soil I've tried to bury them in...lol).

Actually, I love my little state, despite its many problems. It's got beautiful hills, hidden rivers and creeks, wildlife in abundance, and the world's sweetest watermelons from Cave City, where I went to school. Hope, Arkansas tries to lay claim to this, but they're full of crap.

Doing okay, Cal. How are you doing?

Mostly good. The knee surgery was a mixed success as far as fixing the problem but the pain has yet to go away. It's pretty bad. But I'm still optimistic. The doctor gave me a steroid shot that doesn't take effect for 7-10 days but lasts for weeks. Today is Day 6 since the injection. So, cross your fingers!

I pray thee peace, I will be flesh and blood;
For there was never yet philosopher
That could endure the toothache patiently,
However they have writ the style of gods,
And made a push at chance and sufferance.
And also: Braaaaainnnns...

I would be doing better if I didn't have all this stress about whether or not I have like 12 different dogs I might have to care for in 96 hours...but maybe I can say no to one of these clients?

The joy, exhilaration and freedom that comes of saying "NO" is greatly overlooked and unappreciated in our time.

Especially when you get to say it to someone who is NOT used to hearing it. The look on their face, is, priceless.
;)

It was once easy for me to say "No" to things. As I get older and the effects of two severe breakdowns continue to haunt me I've become less decisive. Saying "No" is hard for me now.

...sigh. The guy who told me I could share a ride with him to the Judas Priest concert on June 1 flaked on me. Now I'm stuck with a $52 ticket ($105 with "fees and other services" from the online retailer). Today is a good day for that guy to...well, insert your own punishment.

Sorry, Cal - that's a very poor do :(

Yeah, my ex-wife has offered to drive me the 30 miles to the place and back and drop me off, but she has some health problems and the thing wouldn't be over until 10 or 11 and I'd hate for her to have to wait somewhere. I might just give it to one of my friends, who's been exceedingly generous and thoughtful the last few years. For example, it was his idea to Go Fund among our other friends a portrait of my first D&D character. It's done by a guy who's illustrated in gaming mags and cards. I'd have to go look at it to see the name, though.
I guess I'll hang on one more week and if there are no takers I'll give it to him, though the rat bastard is seeing Deep Purple and I'm not...lol.

Enough whinging. What's everyone doing tonight? Dinner, movies, fighting the things under the bed?

From underneath the bed.

There's nothing under the bed.

Watching The Tick on Amazon.

How is that? I really liked the first, short-lived series.

I almost never watch television but I might check it out.

Been awake all night. There was a time when this was my modus operandi. This is no longer that time...lol. I found some new age-y piano music on Spotify so hopefully, that'll help me slide into the void for a while.

I also just found out it's been cancelled. Actors are still under contract, so they're looking for a new home for the series, but Amazon isn't going forward with a 3rd season.

Dang it.

I have the hardback of the "The World of Kong: A Natural History of Skull Island" companion book to the Jackson version. It's got scores of cool "modern" dinosaurs and other critters. It was illustrated by the concept artist and designer for many of the beasts.

That makes me think of this from old South Park.

That sounds cool.

I used to LUV dinos as a kid. Read all of the grade school library books about them. They were my favorite part of science class each year.

Of course, I also read all of the grade school books about the Greek and Roman gods and goddesses too. And when I finished those i went to the Iliad and the Oddessy, at 3rd or 4th grade. ;P

When we had to read them for High School english, my classmates were shocked/amazed/dismayed to find that I had already read them. For fun. In grade school.

No accounting for taste I guess? ;)

But of course you do Monkey Santa.

Of course you do,....

I'm still a "paleo-nut". I never got over my love of dinosaurs and other amazing animals that came before us. I subscribed to newsletters and magazine articles and online searches and Curiosity Stream and.. and...

I love dinosaurs.

I'm going through an insomnia phase. This happens every few months or so and I'm a very grumpy DMCal today. If this carries over to tomorrow night's game there will be some grumpy players.

Insomnia is just nature's way of telling you to get a giant corkboard full of polaroids, index cards, and newspaper clippings, all connected by color-coded threads*.

*I may be speaking from experience. I may not. I'll never tell. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to take care of some... things... in my walls.

So I did sort of say no, to the fact I didn't want to have to deal with trying to ref my brother's dog in the middle of the night...by myself...But also glad that I won't have too much stress about June 20th since my former neighbor REALLY wanted me to house sit and dog sit/over night at their place. Which because of having my mom and my brother being gone while they live it on the Eastern Shore...(along with dropping off said puppy) makes my life easier for when I do have more clients. Though right now (like many of you) I want more money in my bank account. :p
