I try not to use Facebook anymore, but I became Friends™ with DungeonmasterCal two weeks ago. (And thank you so much Facebook for sending me an email every frickin' day urging me to go see what memes Cal is sharing.) I noticed Cal hadn't posted his usual "It's Friday, what's going on?!" post in the So What's the Plan, Stan thread, so I held my nose and checked out his Facebook page. (I'm holding my nose because it's Facebook, not because it's Cal's page.)

It turns out that Cal went to the ER yesterday. I'm not entirely sure what's going on, but I think his head is being looked at because he fell. He has a couple other things going on that the doctors are treating. It seems like he'll be released soon, but he's offline for now until he gets out.

Just wanted to let people know. Swift recovery, Cal!

Holy hells. Here's to getting well soon Cal.

Hey gang,

I'm indeed at home but still getting things sorted. I go back next week for a followup with my regular doctor. There are a couple of other things that are going to need addressing, but I'll go into those when I know more.

Thanks for all the good vibes, friends!

How you feeling, Cal?

Not the greatest, to be honest. I'm still dealing with muscle weakness and fatigue, but my doctor thinks he knows why. I see him on Tuesday to discuss it more. I've been on a statin for cholesterol since 2018 (after my heart attack) and I only just last week learned that statins can cause a condition that begins to cause muscles to lose tension and mass from the center of the body outward, resulting in loss of balance, fatigue, pain, and a walk resembling that of tv's Fred Sanford. I've been taken off the statin and we go from here.

My depression has been in pretty bad shape since the 2024 election but the sudden intrusion by a nuclear powered, always happy dog has helped that a lot, though some days are worse. Still wondering if there's a regicide prevention hotline number somewhere...

Ugh. Sorry to hear that, man. Wish I had some words of wisdom or something, but all I got is the following exchange from yesterday.

MY WIFE: ...so you said a while back 'I love life'.
ME: *I* said that?
WIFE: Yeah, I know. It was weird, which is why I remembered it.
ME: Huh. Guess you never really know somebody. Even when he's you.

Scratches and pets to the new dog.

I think those are words of wisdom right there. And Archie says, "Thanks!"

Speaking of petting and scratching and totally not committing felonies... yesterday on our walk, the dogs and I met a tiny fluffball puppy who looked exactly like he could be the chaos clone of my blue merle Aussie. And I did not seize him from his owner and run down the street yelling "START THE ENGINE!"

So... moral progress?

I dunno. Life is weird and about some kind of personal growth or something, I guess.

Yeah, I would have simply knocked the owner out cold and calmly walked away with the dog. You're expending way too much energy.

I've never tried to knock someone out cold. Seems like a fine line between that and manslaughter. Plus, what's the point of all the speed work I've been doing the past couple years if not to enable a quick getaway from shenanigans?

Went to see my regular doc today. He said if I hadn't gone into the hospital the day I did I would have probably died. My kidneys were evidently a lot closer to shutting down than I was told. The sepsis, while just beginning, was worse than I was told. I live on out of spite.

I reiterate, holy hells. Glad you made it out.

Keep in touch through your recovery man, as best you can. We care about you here.

Nah, it takes surprisingly little effort to knock someone out. And if the line is crossed, well, they were just as likely to be overcome by the cuteness of the dog and faint, resulting in the same outcome. Absolution.

Yes. I'm certain that's how this works.

Well, if there's one thing 35 years of the world wide web has taught us, it is that when it comes to street fighting tips and legal advice, you can always count on the accuracy of internet strangers...

Oh fer cripes sake... IT WASN'T SUPPOSED TO TURN OUT LIKE THIS! Dammit, we were a happy place where people argued about whether the Enterprise or Millenium Falcon would win in a fight and traded pickle recipes... God damn you! God damn you all to hell!!!

One of the few movies that really freaked me out. I watched it mid-afternoon alone in the house and still had to check every room when I was done.

How you feeling Cal?

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Oh, hi. I just now got around to checking this thread, and thanks for askin'!

Overall, I'd say I'm better. I'm walking and standing longer than I have in a long time, though this week has seen a bit of a return to some of the muscle weakness. But I had labs done yesterday and no sign of the UTI or sepsis. I did take a pretty hard fall from about 12-14 inches onto concrete earlier today and I **might** have a slight injury to a rib or two. It doesn't feel serious (I've had hairline fractures to my ribs before and sort of know what they feel like) but I'm also very, very sore and about to be so heavily medicated I might forget my middle name (it's Neil, so if I ask anyone help me out...lol).

But my blood glucose was 104 and my A1C was 5.6, well below the Diabeetus II threshold. My cholesterol was a little elevated but I think that's because the statin I'd been on for seven years was unprescribed to me and hasn't been replaced with anything else yet. I learned statins for cholesterol can destroy muscle strength and while it's recoverable, it's going to be a long process after being on that particular med for so long.

Good to hear the blood glucose & A1C are lower, that's positive! And that the UTI & sepsis are gone. Bummer about the fall. Goddamn physics. The worst!

*shakes tiny fist in fury*

The tiny little town where I grew up going to school (Cave City, Arkansas. Home of the Cavemen!) from kindergarten to graduation was hit by a tornado last night. The devastation is awful. I haven't been there in a long, long time but it holds so many memories for me. My family is also pretty rooted in the area. Fortunately, none of them were injured or suffered much property loss.

This is fantastic and perfect for the quasi-Slavic/Central Asian campaign setting I'm tinkering around with.

Yet again the guys from Full Metal Jacket with the bars of soap in socks somehow got into my house and laid into me as I slept. How does this keep happening?

How's everyone else?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Not too bad. Down to 415 pounds (188 kilograms for you heathens on the metric system). Had some setbacks on the strength rebuilding but my doctor thinks that might be due to medication, so he took me off one (a statin for cholesterol) and now we're just doing the process of elimination thing. And speaking of that, getting old makes that wonky.
