Polymorph any Object: wasp into bigger wasp

Hi everyone,

my character, a Gnome Oracle, has a Wasp Familiar that he would like to ride. Mauler archetype is not an option as the familiar is already a Protector, and I don't have space for feats, if any. I was thus thinking about using Polymorph any Object to simply transforming the Tiny wasp into a Medium wasp (or Giant Bee, Giant Bumblebee, Giant Mosquito). Unfortunately it seems that such a simple task is not possible, as the spell only emulates:

- Greater Polymorph
- Baleful Polymorph
- Flesh to Stone
- Stone to Flesh
- Transmute Mud to Rock
- Transmute Metal to Wood
- Transmute Rock to Mud

and none of them cover Vermin, or anything related to a "wasp" as suitable shape. Any idea?

Well, if you willing to do house rules, there might be some options. You could let the character polymorph vermin despite it not being in the rules. Another possibility, you could allow the character to do special research to figure out how to make polymorph spells work that way.

Several of the examples of polymorph any object use in the polymorphism any object description can’t be achieved by any of those spells, so the interpretation that PoA can only emulate those spells is not correct. However, what it does beyond those spells is unclear: I think it’s reasonable that you could turn him into a giant wasp, but by rule whether your wasp keeps abilities like flight and it’s natural attack [edit: even generic polymorph you gain form natural attacks, but the poison...] has to be decided by DM for each case. Alternatively, PoA emulate beast shape for a flier and pretend its a wasp.

Since this is your familiar, you can cast Enlarge Person on the familiar. This spell can then be made permanent with Permanency for 2,500 gp. Now the tiny familiar is size small. Add the feat Undersized Mount, and you can now ride it. You could instead use Reduce Person made permanent for 2,500 gp.

If you are intent on using the adjustments of another polymorph spell, you would be looking for Vermin Shape 2. VS 1 can get you a medium vermin with flight, but it doesn't include poison.
