When a melee weapon is thrown, is it still considered a melee weapon?

Classes

I'm playing through Doomsday Dawn with a Rogue multiclassing Ranger who throws returning daggers (starknives) as my "main" character (A Vax 'dagger dagger dagger' build).

On the stream the other day, Logan Bonner answered my question about Twin Takedown working for thrown melee weapons, where he answered that: the intent was that the strikes would be melee attacks, but as written you can use it with throwing weapons and it will probably not break anything so it's probably fine to do so, with the caveat that it'd be reviewed for 1.4

The Rogue's Technique, Finesse Striker, has similar wording that makes it unclear whether it applies to a melee weapon when it is thrown.

A rule on the distinction of what a weapon with the thrown trait qualifies as when thrown would probably be the simplest solution.

As far as I'd consider, by RAW, I think it'd count as a melee weapon, since it is in the melee weapon category, but not count as a melee strike, which means it should count for Twin Takedown, and Finesse Striker, but not, for example, Power Attack, if you were to get that from somewhere. On the other side of it, if you had an ability that required ranged attacks, it would count for that, but not if the ability required a ranged weapon.

Oddly enough, I think this still should be possibly revised, as by RAW, darts and shurikens, which are also agile thrown weapons don't get to add Dex to damage, since they're ranged weapons (but still get to add Str to damage, because they're thrown), which doesn't feel very Rogue-y

As written, thrown weapons atm have 2 distinct categories.

ranged and melee.

looking at Thrown tag, it actually specifies different rules for Melee thrown and Ranged thrown (different for melee and ranged, so that in the end, they both work the same while thrown).

This part makes it look like that having melee thrown and ranged thrown being 2 different things is, in fact, deliberate and not a random error.

Imo, Thrown should be rewritten to be its own category of weapons and be done with all this insanity that comes from 3rd edition and onwards that treats them as sometimes ranged, sometimes melee and sometimes thrown...

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I'm also convinced that melee weapons are considered melee weapons whether thrown or stabbed with. It would be nice to have finesse striker call out thrown specifically though.
