More Paladin options

General Discussion

I understand that Paladins must be lawful good. But it would be nice to add some flavor like we have with the Druidic Orders and Sorcerer Bloodlines but with deities? Like choosing to worship a certain deity will change spells, feats and skills. What would it look like if a Paladin lost her way due to a traumatic event? Which lead her to start experimenting with Necromancy while worshipping Zon-Kuthon. Just would be nice to see more options for customizing the Paladin.

Well...

It does in a limited fashion. It changes what weapon you use as a deific weapon. It changes your Domains (if you take them) as well. I wouldn't mind different skills though. That would be cool.

They would fall. I mean, that is about it. A Paladin who worships Zon-Kuthon no longer qualifies for the class.

Exactly. I guess I’m wanting more role playing aspects. Maybe added as archetypes. Somewhat how Arthas was a Paladin and when he fell he became a Death Knight.

Okay - Well, I don't want to get into Paladin alignment debate 1,367,212, but I'm a diehard old school traditionalist when it comes to that topic.

It is my hill to die on as it were. I will not, I cannot support any non-Lawful Good Paladin, and I feel almost morally obligated to oppose non-Lawful Good Paladins.

AD&D, 2nd Ed, 3.X, PF1, and PF2 Paladins are not just Knights who serve a God. They are much more than that. There is a lot of lore and tradition regarding exactly what they are, but even in PF1, which didn't officially acknowledge the original lore (but did allude to it), Paladins were weird.

They were LG only save for 1 situation.

The Gray Paladin. This was the only non-LG Paladin and the lore stated that their powers were weaker, handicapped, due to their less strict code.

Antipaladins are not Paladins.
Vindictive Bastards, a Paladin archetype, are also explicitly stated to not be Paladins. They are Ex-Paladins.

World of Warcraft Paladins are not the same Paladins. 4th Ed and 5th Ed Paladins are not Paladins as defined originally for D&D by their creator, the late Gary Gygax.

Pathfinder Paladins are Knights of Justice that possess an exceptional quality that grants them special powers. For some reason Gods can't give these powers out. Why? We don't legitimately know. It was confirmed though, by Paizo, specifically the creative director, in the 1e lore that evil gods couldn't make Paladins.

In 2e lore this has stayed.

For some reason the Code and the Lawful Good alignment is what fuels a Paladin's powers.

Why? We don't know.

While I'm all for more Paladin options, I don't like Retributive Strike (at all), I do not wish to see non-Lawful Good Paladins in Pathfinder 2e.
