Help me Populate my Darklands.

Advice

I'm running a game where my players are going to be escaped drow pit fighters that are trying to reach the surface by going through the darklands after a cave in on the arena wall.

I wanted help with some sort of encounters they would face along the way.

The party will be 3 players(Potentially 4) With an average optimization curve, and a 20 point buy.

I already have one encounter planned, which is the pit fight with a Cytillipede.

I'm hoping for some good non combat based challenges to add in as well, because I can quickly make up a combat encounter without much trouble.

What level the PCs start at?

The PCs will be starting at 4th level. And they will have their gear on account of the drow wanting a good show.

4th level drow means no flight, which in turn means that physical barriers like crossing chasms, getting behind a waterfall etc. are still things they have to work at.

Maybe there's an underground river or lake and they might be able to persuade a nearby boat owner to give them a ride, or if they get close enough 'persuade' the boat owner with weapons.

They're heading down a corridor. A merchant caravan is just ahead. Sounds suggest drow riding fast spiders are behind. Do they try and catch up with the merchants and either force their way past (the merchants will assume they're bandits and fight back), bribe or persuade the merchants to hide them, or do they head towards the spider riders to attack or ambush them, or do nothing (which will probably lead to a fight with both merchants and spider riders at once).

I should note that by drow pit fighters, I mean they're drow slaves. Theread are a bunch of different races available to them, mostly subterranean themed. Buthe they aren't all drow, though they have rhe option of playing a drow male.

Lantern Lodge

There is always the classic Wizard's Magical Iron Tower appearing in the middle of a tunnel and the party have to find a way to get past it. Either by talking to a cranky wizard or fighting say wizard.

Duergar maintain trade tunnels with toils along the way. Maybe the news of their escape has spread and there is now a reward for them. They must find a way through without being caught.

Encountering a dragon in its lair. The party can stumble across a pile of treasure or magical items and end up looting the items. Maybe the dragon is a Crystal Dragon and the party mess up by touching its stuff, so now it wants something in return.
