Iron Gods

Dark Archive

I've haven't been role playing since pathfinder core rules released. Now that the young ones are old enough to show interest in playing I'm returning. I've purchased the APG, GMG, and Bestiary 1-3. We chose to partake in IG. My question is what purchases do I need to make in order to run this effectively. Pawns, maps, source books, etc; and how many pawn sets do I need of each? Thank you for your help.

You have not mentioned owning the Core Rulebook or the six modules of Iron Gods, in either hardcover or pdf. But those go without saying.

I run fairly low budget. For maps, I used a square-grid playmat and markers that I can wash off. Most combat encounters fit on a 20-square-by-20-square playmat, but sometimes I have to unroll my larger 30-by-30 playmat. For minatures, I used character meeples from Meeple Source. For large creatures, I cut out a 2-by-2 square of paper to mark the space it occupied and put a generic meeple on top of it.

Most rules are available online at the Pathfinder Reference Document, d20pfsrd, and Archives of Nethys. Purchasing the PDFs gives the illustrations and purchasing the hardcovers gives something to hand to players, but they are not absolutely necessary. The Technology Guide is handy to hand to a player, rather than looking up at the Pathfinder Reference Document, but they won't benefit from that information until 7th level when the player characters can afford to go shopping for technological items at a black market.

The material in Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Numeria, Land of Fallen Stars is not available online. It is a nice supplement for when the players go off the adventure path, but it is not vital. I also purchased the PDF of Pathfinder Player Companion: Black Markets when I decided to send the party to The Tarnished Halls, Numerica's biggest black market. However, that splatbook describes how to create black markets, so I created the Tarnished Halls myself. I posted it to this subforum, follow the link above.

IG has a lot of traveling across the country between mags. Land of Fallen Stars is massively helpful if you want to do any adventuring or random encounters during these trips. If you're just going to fast forward to the next destination without incident, it's not needed.

You have to have the Technology Guide. Most of the resources you need are freely available in the PRD. I'd recommend picking up the People of the River and People of the Stars Players Companion books as well. Both can add a lot of player ready information to the campaign setting, specifically the River Kingdoms and Numeria.

Some monsters are in Bestiary 4, so could be nice to have that, on the othe rhand maybe just swap them out for othe rmonsters or just reskin other monsters to fit them

Liberty's Edge

I have just begun GMing IG for my kids and their friends (Party - Six of Sixth) and all of the above material they've list has been and is helpful. BUT...most helpful visually has been the IG pawn set. I purchased the pdf and printed them out myself on card-stock, plus some pawn bases and I have 90% of the encounter creatures. Kids are very visual!

Also some of the above books are part of the PRD, others if you can borrow from gaming friends do so, otherwise go with the pdf and have a laptop handy for quick reference.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I make the tokens myself, but I don't print them out, I run the game on roll20. But before we moved online, I started to print a few of them, works very nicely also.

Oh, I started doing a red outline for enemies, switched to a uniform purple for all tokens after a while, so my players can't see whether a creature is enemy by just looking at the token

Yes.
Minis, pawns and maps are a must! .

Brother Fen, what are those little plastic condition markers called and where can they be purchased?

Those are the "4E Condition Tokens". You can get them from Litko.

Cool, thank you!
