If I remember right from pathfinder, Efreet were rather nasty genies granting malicious wishes 3 times per day. The Burning Archipelago has upwards of 10,000 of these guys living with the other mortal races. Why aren't the mortals trying to use wishes left right and center, and why aren't the Efreet doing the usual "careful what you wish for routine".
What you guys think? Are these Efreet different from the ones we know in pathfinder?

I haven't seen any statblocks for starfinder, and was basing it off of pathfinder. That said, same universe, same creature, the fundamentals should be the same no?
They typically have the same CRs, but statblocks do change around a tiny bit.
The Oma, for example, loses its fire immunity in Starfinder, but it has a ranged electrical attack, unlike in Pathfinder.

Yep. But other examples like the jiang shi keeping its grab attack and drain chi, eind and water elementals keeping vortex and such, the monsters still keep the things that make them that monster. So it would make sense for efreet to still have wish in some shape since that's what they're known for.
How would that affect living with so many of them.

I imagine the main thing stopping this is "The Church of Sarenrae". Misbehaving efreeti quickly become efreeti answering to a squad of Sarenite soldier-priests.
Also, IIRC, not all efreeti can grant wishes, only their nobility can. So, smaller populace.
All Efreeti can grant three wishes per day. It's the other genie species that restrict wish granting to nobles, and on a much more limited frequency.

The efreet described in Pact Worlds seem to be basically Space Arab traders whose territory is the Plane of Fire and the Sun. I highly doubt they're wish-granting genies. It seems likelier they are comparable to ifrits from Pathfinder, and to the other half-caste Outsider races therein.

The average citizen in the Starfinder universe is more educated (consider how many more languages every speaks by default) and has easier access to knowledge, and is as a result more aware of the LE efreet's tendancy to twist wishes into undesireable outcomes. I imagine it's a similar situation to loan sharks: everyone knows the outcome is not going to be good, so only the truly desperate or foolish go that route.

Oh, I love that idea! And honestly, yes, efreeti are Lawful Evil, but most probably have better things to do than grant wishes to desperate shmucks, especially given the risk they put themselves in if things go too far. As stated above, the Church of Sarenrae would come down on them like a ton of bricks. And it's not like they even stand much to gain from twisting most wishes other than amusement.
Unless they charge people for granting wishes. Those would definitely be extremely black-market affairs, and even the most unscrupulous efreeti would be careful not to mess up too much stuff. Also, that's combining the risks of careless wish-granting with the risks of running an illegal business. I don't doubt that some efreeti are doing exactly that, but they would have to be extraordinarily cunning and careful. Some efreeti might consider those "wish sharks" very stupid, others might secretly admire them. But I imagine that quite a few would be very jealous of those efreeti working their dream job.

Of course, there's nothing to keep an efreet from *not* twisting a wish they grant. After all, its not like someone is compelling them against their will, like the classic genie in a lamp. The wish-seeker just needs to be able to pay what the efreet is able to charge for the service.
Needless to say, this is probably *also* a bad idea, because efreet are old and canny LE elementals, and most things a Wish could provide could also just be bought on the open market. If your going to the Burning Archipelago to patronize an efreet, its probably because what you want is either beyond your means or rather illegal. And since the efreeti know that. . . well, this seems like a great way to end up enslaved, one way or another.
