Maybe I'm off base here, but it really seems to me that the description of Field Plate and it's stats do not match up.
Then --> Field Plate: 1,200gp, +7 AC, +1 Dex, –5 Armor Check, 35% Spell Failure, 20ft Movement (base 30ft), 15 ft (base 20ft), 50 lbs
Shouldn't it read as follows?

Field plate is effectively the same as masterwork banded mail. You can purchase masterwork field plate.
Masterwork Armor
Just as with weapons, you can purchase or craft masterwork versions of armor or shields. Such a well-made item functions like the normal version, except that its armor check penalty is lessened by 1.
Then we have. So where is the problem?
Banded mail 250 gp +7 +1 –6 35% 20 ft.2 15 ft.2 35 lbs. CRB
Field Plate 1,200 gp +7 +1 -5 35% 20 ft.2 15 ft.2 50 lbs. ISWG
Full plate 1,500 gp +9 +1 –6 35% 20 ft.2 15 ft.2 50 lbs. CRB
Unless the PFSRD has missed a change.

Well lets take a look
First "This heavy armor is similar to full plate but lighter in construction" now I can see how people can think this is weight but lighter in construction refers to how its made not its weight.
Full plate: 1,500 gp, +9 AC, +1 Dex, -6 Armor Check, 35% Spell Failure, 20 ft (base 30ft) 15 ft (base 20ft) 50 lbs.
Field Plate: 1,200 gp, +7 AC, +1 Dex, -5 Armor Check, 35% Spell Failure, 20 ft (base 30ft) 15 ft (base 20ft) 50 lbs.
Field plate grants 2 less to AC than Full Plate "sacrificing a bit of protection"
and its Armor Check Penealty is reduced by 1 "greater flexibility and mobility"
I hope this clears up this issue.

Considering every medium and heavy armor received an increase of 1 to their Armor bonus in the CRB (compared to 3.5), I'd ask your GM to rule that Field Plate get the same treatment; its original "place" in the armor chain bridged the gap between Half Plate (+7 AC, +0 Dex) and Full Plate (+8 AC, +1 Dex), appropriately at a cost between the two. Unedited, Field Plate is essentially paying 950 gold for Banded Mail with 1 ACP better.
I'd wager this was a development oversight.
