Righteous Might (UMD) with an Oath of Vengeance Paladin

Rules Questions

Hi people,

I am making an Oath of Vengeance PLD with UMD as a focal point. Obviously assuming I can get her UMD check high enough to cast Righteous Might with a scroll, does she get the DR/5 evil since channel has been replaced with "burn 2 uses of lay on hands for an additional smite"? Normally she would be able to channel positive, but I thought I'd ask. Thanks!

Silver Crusade

Well since it goes off the “normally channel” yes, you’d still get the DR I’d say.

*Scratches head* or would it go off the caster that made the scroll?

I think it'd be determined by the creator of the scroll.
That or you do the DR/Evil since you're a positive energy guy with your LoH similar to how it works for oracles.

Paladins cant UMD! Your pretending to be something your not to garner combat advantages! SHAMEFUL!

You can't use UMD, because you are no longer acting with honor, lying to the magic item, therefore when you attempt a check, you Fall.*

*I do not actually GM like that, if the paladin did use UMD, I would grant them the DR/Evil, because it goes off of who made the scroll, which defaults to Cleric.

I would say "No, you would not get it." You do not channel energy any longer, therefor that part cannot affect you.

Here is another thread about it, concerning inquistors, since they don't have channel either. Most say they would give it based on alignment, but I personally would not.

Now, that's RAW not RAI. Personally, considering you are getting a bonus from the oath, I wouldn't allow it even in my home game. You traded that ability away, not "didn't have it to begin with."

1 person marked this as a favorite.

But the spell is based on the caster. The caster, as it applies to scrolls, is the scriber. The person activating the scroll doesn't really make any decisions regarding it.

What happens if the PC also makes the DC21 UMD check to emulate the class features of a level 1 cleric?

Well, that would be different, although I will state I'm not a big fan of it, the rules allow it. I would make sure the scroll user made every possible UMD.

Does the Paladin (which is a Cha based character) have sufficient wisdom to cast the scroll? 5th level spell. That would be a 15 Wisdom. No? Make the UMD to emulate the ability score (DC 30, if I am reading it right).

Then a "Use scroll" check. Caster level is 9th for a 5th level cleric spell. So DC 29.

Finally, emulate a class feature. DC 21 as you said.

Since you are trying to use every bit of it, then any check fails that fails, then it's a failed action to me. Roll of 1, and that scroll cannot be used for 24 hours.
