As to (e.g wand/staff/ring)... Nothing that I know allows for non-weapon instruments.
I super vaguely remember a weapon from 3.5 that basically was a short sword that doubled as the bow of a violin. There's also the tuned bowstring if you want to go the bow route, but it's quite pricey.
Basically, I want to shoot lightning bolts out of the bard's favorite musical instrument [using the other stuff permitted by the 'magician' alternate type].
Probably the best way to do this is the Spellsong feat. I don't think think there's any way to make your instrument a bonded item, and it's a rather severe downside to have such a bulky bonded object anyways so I wouldn't advise it even if it were possible.
Clarify: weapons aren't allowed as bonded objects for the magician variant.
I think you missed something... Staff is a weapon. As such, there is no reason you couldn't take that War Flute and make it a flute staff. As such, use the new weapon rules from weapon master book to make the staff/instrument you want.
It looks like this is a “ask your GM” thing, since Arcane bonds have to be from a very specific group of objects.
I’d definitely allow it if I were your GM, for what it’s worth. That sounds like a cool idea.
As a GM, I'd also allow it.
