Flak thrower or laser net in a turret?

Rules Questions

If a starship weapon with the point property is placed in a turret, can it intercept missiles from any direction? My initial thought is no, as the point weapon entry mentions facing and the turret doesn't really have a facing (plus it makes an overly powerful anti-missile defense), but would like to hear other's opinions.

The point of a turret is to give a weapon the ability to face in all directions. Best place to put a point defence weapon really.

and it comes at the opportunity cost of not putting a harder hitting/longer range weapon in that spot (without spending more BP for a second mount on a turret/second turret).
I don't really see a problem with a point defense turret.

You can absolutely put a point defense weapon in a turret. The advantage is that it can cover you from missiles from any angle, the downside is that PD weapons are typically short range and/or low power compared to other options. IE you sacrifice better offense (by not installing a more powerful gun) to gain improved missile defense.

for examplein Battlefleet Gothic and Renegade Legion Leviathan... all turrets are used for point defense

the idea of a close in weapon/point defense that cant cover massive arcs around a ship is far more head scratching to me.

I spent the longest time writing a reply to this explaining optimal turret zone coverage and traversal angles, linking to wikipedia articles for Centurion C-RAMs and Phalanx CIWS etc, then I reread your post and realized it said "cant" - not "can". I'm an idiot. >__<

:P No worries. I actually revised my comment when i was writing it because I was originally thinking of CIWS needing a full 360 coverage but then remembered most ships cant actually do that, they get about 180-270 degrees of coverage and use multiple weapon mounts to get full coverage. i dont think we have anything like that in the game. It would be neat to see "partial turrets" that can shoot out of two or three arcs...

or a weapon with both the point and the broad category.

Don't forget that point defense guns are fairly cheap, while turret mounts are fairly dear. On a bigger ship, putting cheap point defense guns on each arc might be well worth the cost, in order to free up fewer more expensive turret slots for bigger guns.

Isn't that what gyrolasers are for?

A weapon with both broad and point would be nice but doubt we will ever see one. If we do it would have to be a Capital weapon as we already have a heavy point weapon.

Defensive Laser Battery
Size - Capital
Range - short
Damage - 5D8
PCU - 25
BP - 20
Special Point (+16), Broad

umm.. oh. yeah. the -2 penalty to them seems arbitrary but yeah, they do pull off 270 degrees of coverage.
