the whole ship design system is badly flawed, along with assorted issues with the components going in a ship.

they could have been a far better job by at least borrowing or stealing from other game systems and filing the serial numbers off

go with a volume based system[Traveller, Space Opera, among others]

go with something akin to what they have now, but at least do a better job of defining what can fit in a given space.

and we havent even discussed the use of bomb-pumped laser warheads... or Orion maneuver drives

1 person marked this as a favorite.

why bother with a nuke? you can do really entertaining things with big rocks dropped from orbit, or fired by a Mass Driver... think Babylon 5 and what the Centauri did to the Narn home world... nukes have uses... such as a bug infested planet like in Starship Troopers...

there are traveller starship minatures available... from the lowly Scout/Courier up to the Plankwell Dreadnought even... sadly no love for the Tigress DN

for examplein Battlefleet Gothic and Renegade Legion Leviathan... all turrets are used for point defense

couple of Traveller books talk about wierd things in jumpspace, especially the 1248 books from Com-Star that detail the re-taking of Core sector among other things... hmm... Vampire Fleets in Starfinder...

there are a few Starfinder specific deck plans out there, there are also deckplans for other game systems that could easily be adapted to Starfinder

where does the Traveller end of the wormhole start? another idea would be for a Traveller ship to suffer a severe misjump and end up on the fringe of the pact worlds

I have been using it to build everything I have been posting... great site

I play Artemis once a month with a crew of mostly Honor Harrington fans

heres one for the Traveller fans especially.. a Vargr thrash metal band

No problem. Here's a link to the deckplan, which is halfway down the page. Sorry about earlier. It seems that the Cargo hold is beneath the Drive Section.

I would trust the Traders and Gunboats plans BEFORE I would trust anything produced by Mongoose... Rikki Tikki Traveller is plagued by poor editing and proofreading almost on a par with Imperium Games.. I helped playtest Pocket Empires and Imperial Squadrons for T4

Looking at Traders and Gunboats right now. There are floor and ceiling hatches just outside the Bridge. Beneath the Bridge is the Cargo Hold. The Upper Gallery Begins at above the Bridge and extends all the way to the Aft end of the ship, just above the Drives Section.

Thanks John

I will doublecheck my copy in the morning, I am going braindead at this hour

my 3 favorite PC sized ships for Traveller being the Type S, the Far Trader, and the Broadsword Mercenary Cruiser.

for bigger ships... Azhanti High Lightning Fleet Intruder, and the Tigress class Dreadnought

the Type S was also known for a problem with the atmospheric systems, if you didnt change the filters or maintain them well it got a bit stinky
in a hurry

Thematically, I like the idea that certain drives are only compatible with certain kinds of ships. It forces people to make real choices about prioritizing what they want to have, rather than always tossing on the "best" parts.

Ways of splitting it include...

>Size-based, where bigger ships can have more powerful engines

>Culture-based, where certain creators use certain types of drives

>Prestige-based, where you have to get on good terms with Insert-Power-Figure to be allowed to install certain equipment

I could probably come up with a few others given some time. XD

Other Ideas to put forth:

drive systems that require an AI computer to handle operation of the drive and or navigation calculations[various fictions]

drive systems that require time to recharge using charging stations or solar sails[Battletech]

drive systems that take you into a plane where various nasty creatures live and would happily snack on intruders[Warhamner 40K]

I like this, something else to consider, would a particular drive require a certain computer model?

wow.. thats beyond annoying...
lets try this then

I have bashed together a collection of starship designs using the basic rules, there all basic text files, is there a way to post a zip file here to the forums? I posted the file to the Starfinder RPG facebook group already

or something akin to a Pinnace or Gig like in Traveller might work
but again its between a fighter and a shuttle

another thing I would like to see is a Starfinder treatment of the Traveller Modular Cutter

something to keep in mind on the some of the ships... going back to my Star Fleet Battles days, a lot of the Klingon ships could fire the disruptor banks forward AND straight aft

My first thought after reading the SF rules for the Drift was to drop them and use Traveller Jump Drives (plus the possibility of having some form of jump gate as well). That would also make it easier to use the Traveller Domain maps that I have.

Please keep us informed on what you end up doing with this.. if you need help with anything I would be happy to help, I am fluent with Classic Traveller, GURPS Traveller, and I co-authored Traveller for Hero

Plasma swords don't make any practical sense either (why spend a bunch of time and effort to shape plasma into a sword blade), and they're in the game.

I dunno... plasma swords make as much sense and are as practical as the concept of the Light Caber

a revised/updated/tweaked Starship and Vehicle building system... what we have now is really disapointing at best. I would happily put my keyboard where my mouth is and help work on this, having previously worked on material for Traveller and the Hero System

World Building/Generation, or at least suggestions for shoehorning rules from another game system even.

I use Heaven and Earth for Traveller for generating planets and star systems. it has its limitations, but for brute force approaches... I have been using it for years

I bought it and I love it, I want to see MORE stuff like this, you can never have enough starships and gadgets/weapons etc to fill them

As you can see it is heavily inspired by borderlands, but with starfinder stats.

I tried to match the damage curves as closely as possible to the weapon entries in the core rulebook so the damage per level for energy and kinetic weapon types are pretty balanced and will fit well in the game.

I've had a lot of fun making this, let me know what you think!

COOL!!!!!!

I havent seen anything yet, please let me know, I am an old Traveller hand, and worst comes to worst I can finagle something using one of the assorted Traveller generation systems. there is at least one highly detailed freeware product for Traveller that does anything from single planets to whole subsectors

the program is called Heaven and Earth

if its any help... GURPS Traveller, had 1 displacement ton of cargo space
weighing 7 tons of mass for various calculations.. a displacement ton being 14 cubic meters

Dragon Class System Defense Boat:

Tier: 8
Frame: Light Freighter

Speed: 10
Power Plant: Pulse Black[120]

Weapons Systems:
Forward: Linked Light Laser Cannons
Turret: 2 HE Missile Launchers

Shields: Basic 40
Armor: Mk.10
Defenses: Mk.10
Computer: Basic
Sensors: Basic Long Range

Crew Quarters: Common
Expansion Bays: Cargo Hold, Medical Bay, Escape Pods

Notes:
a small gunboat designed as a system defense craft, they are streamlined for atmospheric use
and tend to work in squadrons from ambush when possible.

This design is based on the 400 ton SDB from the Traveller RPG

I have finished the basic database I was working on, if theres somebody whos really familiar with M$ Access that would like to take a look at it before I release version 1 for general perusal contact me at shadowcat48li@yahoo.com

I am bashing together a database in M$ Access of sample ship designs, so far just the basics from the book, and whatever else I find on the net... can I add any of these to what I have, with proper credit given?

This looks really cool, has anybody tried tinkering with ships from other game systems like Traveller?
